Publications for academia

We would be happy to publish not only your monograph but also your conference proceedings or academic theses such as doctoral dissertations or post-doctoral theses. You may also be interested in our journals or book series.

Talk to us! We will guide your project with many years of experience and commitment.

Every publication project is carefully checked for quality and program suitability by our editors and series editors. We also ensure this through peer review. A clearly contoured program environment and digital availability ensure that your text receives national and international attention in the relevant research field. Of course, we also offer you the option of publishing in Open Access. We would be happy to advise you on finding the right funding for you and your publication.

How does academic publishing work in today’s world?

We offer you high-quality print editions of your manuscripts and, simultaneously, convenient and prompt availability of your content in digital formats such as E-Books or E-Journals. With us, you can make your research results accessible to a wide audience!

Our electronic publications are available in PDF format. Due to the identical pagination with the print edition, this format meets the requirements of academic citation.
Our products are distributed worldwide in carefully planned E-Book collections and as individual titles.
Our long-term archiving of all digital content secures access to your research in the future.
To further increase visibility and usability, your publication will be indexed in all major databases such as Web of Science, Scopus, Summons, Primo, Ebsco Discovery, and Google Scholar.
All texts are provided with MARC records – the international standard for the dissemination of bibliographic data.
Each digital text is assigned a Digital Object Identifier (DOI), a unique identification number that is registered with CrossRef. This means articles, contributions or book chapters can also be accessed and purchased individually.
If you would like to further increase the visibility of your text in the professional and media world, we can also offer you Open Access publication. This is possible for complete books or individual book chapters as well as journal articles. Find out about the possibilities, advantages, and opportunities of Open Access on our Open Access pages.

We assume publishing responsibility – financing your book

Producing a book is an investment in your career that requires careful financial planning. Printing subsidies are one way of securing funding for book production. We advise you on these issues to secure the right funding for you and your publication. In individual cases, we can also publish non-subsidized books without cutting back on the quality of the final product. This means that the publishing risk remains entirely with us. Thanks to our experience and know-how, we are familiar with the important sales markets for your book and are able to offer it through the appropriate channels.

Publications for practitioners

Would you like to publish a reference book, manual, textbook, or guidebook? We also publish practice-oriented literature and materials in print and digital form for schools, training, and studies as well as further and continuing education in the fields of psychology/psychotherapy/counselling, education/social work, congregationalwork, religious education, and Latin.

We represent academically sound content that is created with practitioners in mind and can be implemented in the field - as haptic products and digitally – with a design oriented towards the different needs of our customers. Our products aid our target groups in everyday professional life. They facilitate and support the achievement of professional goals. Beyond the classic book, our portfolio includes more and more products in the non-book sector. We develop digital solutions in a market-driven manner with our target groups’ needs and willingness to buy in mind.

Our customers encounter our products in libraries during their studies, in traditional and social media, on Amazon, in the press and in magazines reviewed and recommended by others, in bookshops, at specialist conferences and book fairs. We are present and visible online and at live events.

Feel free to contact us personally! You will find our dedicated and experienced acquisitions editors for the different fields on this overview page.

Marketing, press and events at Brill Germany and Austria

As a digitally oriented publishing house, we use the diverse possibilities of digital marketing to promote your work in the best possible way. This includes our website, newsletters, and mailings to various target groups as well as our social media channels. But printed advertising materials remain an important tool, especially for the book trade and academic institutions.

Website and blog

The presentation on the brill.com product page is the digital business card of your title. We give your book a lot of space here: in addition to the cover, blurb, and bibliographical information, we provide details about you as the author, a reading sample, the table of contents, our promotional flyer, and – if applicable – other downloadable promotional materials. You can use the PDF flyer option for your own promotional activities as you wish. For example, as part of a book presentation.

On our blog we offer you the opportunity to present your book in an interview to generate interest in your field and research.

Newsletters

In our newsletters we provide information on our new publications, events, and other news from our company according to the subject area. For this purpose, we send out monthly newsletters as well as topic-specific mailings on individual subject areas or conferences. These newsletters, aimed at individual target groups, are often supplemented with a digital theme page where we display relevant titles.

Social Media

On our social media channels, we maintain a lively exchange with our authors, readers, relevant (trade) media, and other parties of importance to the field multipliers. We use our social media channels to provide information about new publications and upcoming events and to disseminate reviews of our books or interesting news from the professional world. We are also happy to share your posts and help you reach even more people.

Catalog/Brochures

Twice a year we publish our highlights catalog. Here we announce titles for a broader audience, new series, and online products. Our subject previews for the individual subject areas are published at the same time. They contain all titles within a particular subject area announced for spring or autumn.

You can access our digital catalogs here. Subscribe to our newsletter to stay informed about the release of new catalogs. In addition, we produce target-group-specific specialist brochures and flyers for larger conferences so that your titles are also promoted within the community.

Press/Reviews

We have extensive contacts in the relevant media, magazines, and feature pages whom we inform regularly about new publications in our press newsletter. It goes without saying that we provide printed or digital review copies free of charge. We are also happy to consider your comments and to invite relevant reviewers for a discussion of your book upon its publication.

Events

Every year we present our program at numerous trade fairs, congresses, and conferences in Germany and all over the world. You will find us at the Frankfurt and Leipzig book fairs, for example, as well as at numerous relevant national and international trade congresses and conferences. There we display thematically suitable titles and promotional materials and meet attendees in person. You can find an overview of all the trade fairs and conferences we have attended here.

We are also happy to support you with your book presentations and other events of your own.We are also happy to support you with your book presentations and other events of your own.

Subject Areas

Brill brings to life works in the Humanities, Social Sciences, International Law, and selected areas in the Sciences. View the full list of subjects here.

Publication Formats

We publish simultaneously in print and in E-Book on our own electronic platform. We also ensure that all our content is featured on third party partner platforms serving the academic community, so that your readers can access your work from their preferred platform or supplier.

Our catalog includes well-respected series, monographs, bibliographies, major reference works and digital references, to meet the varied needs of scholars and libraries. Your Acquisitions Editor will discuss with you the best ‘fit’ for your work.

Open Access

We are committed to ensuring that our content reaches the widest possible audience, that we are research-funding compliant, and actively involved in initiatives to promote Open Access in the Humanities and Social Sciences.

Perhaps in the future all books will be published this way. For now, we make decisions on a title-by-title basis based on what’s right for the title and the author as well as for us as a business. Our Open Access publication charges are competitive, page-based and tailor-made.

Book Proposal, Step by Step

Step 1

1

Step 2

2

Step 3

3

Step 4

4

Find the relevant Acquisitions Editor at Brill.
Write a 5-10 page proposal. Include title, author(s) curriculum vitae, a short summary, a table of contents, readership, word count, and expected date of submission. It’s really important that your proposal makes clear why you believe there is a need for your book.
The Acquisitions Editor will advise whether your proposal has been successful with the Editorial Board.
Send in your draft manuscript for peer-review.

Preparing your manuscript

  • A book’s audience, purpose and structure are all different from those of a dissertation. All publishing is very competitive. To attract readers to your work, prioritize what is new, different and original.
  • A clear structure will give your readers confidence in your ability to organize your material and your arguments.
  • Make sure your manuscript is spell-checked and copy-edited (we can help you find support for this).
  • Submit your manuscript as a single file, either in Word or as a PDF.

“When you publish in a Brill series you join a community of scholars” – Ahmad Al-Jallad

Q: Who should I contact about publishing my work with Brill?

A: Our Acquisitions Editors contact details are given above.

Q: I have published a chapter/article with Brill. Can I publish it elsewhere?

A: Yes, this is usually fine. Just read the guidance on our rights and permissions page or contact rights@brill.com for more details.

Q: How long does it take to publish a book with Brill?

A: After acceptance of your manuscript, it takes about 6 months. Find out what’s involved by looking at our Production Timeline.

Q: Do I get a discount on Brill books?

A: Yes! Authors and editors of Brill books can order any of our titles on our website at 35% discount.

Q: I want to publish in Open Access. How does this work?

A: Visit our page on Open Access or contact us at openaccess@brill.com.

Q: How do you decide the price of a Brill book?

A: Many of our books are very specialist, and the audience for them worldwide is small, which pushes up the costs we need to cover. If your library has access to the E-Book on brill.com, you can buy a MyBook copy at €25 or $25 as an individual.

Q: Do you need support in editing, translation, formatting, or indexing your work before submitting it to Brill?

Welcome!

Meet our Chief Publishing Officer

“My own background as an academic means that I’m always conscious of the research community, our authors, at the heart of our publishing strategies. I joined Brill in 2011 as Assistant Editor, so I have first-hand experience of all aspects of our commissioning and production processes. That’s important if I’m to help steer the company into a future that works for us and for all the academic communities we’re here to serve.

As a medium-sized independent publisher, we can and do prioritize excellence in publishing – content, editing, production values – and provide a supportive, personal service to our authors. Looking to the future, I believe in a fast, fair and transparent transition to Open Access for all research fields and am committed to exploring publishing models that are both sustainable and achieve the greatest possible visibility for your work.

I work with a fantastic team of talented publishers, and I invite you to do so too!”

What Authors Say

I experienced the publishing process as author-friendly and family oriented…I was very impressed with the high quality production work. The book is visually stunning, the artworks are in full color, and the quality of the pages is top notch. They even allowed me to choose my own image for the book cover, and the book cover design is lovely.

Carol A. Mullen,
author of Canadian Indigenous Literature and Art: Decolonizing Education, Culture, and Society

When we learnt that Brill was starting a series dedicated to Romance languages, we were excited that our work on an Italian dialect would be one of the first volumes of this new series. The scientific editor, an expert in dialectology, ensured high standards.

Casalicchio and Patrizia Cordin,
authors of Grammar of Central Trentino

My older paper on Herman Melville’s use of visual arts in his novels, drew inspiration from That Cunning Alphabet, by Richard S. Moore. This book left a lasting impression on me; I remember its publisher, Rodopi, was part of Brill. Later when I set out for my book project, I decided to publish with Brill, knowing it has published first-rate scholarly works, including Moore's. I remember I was elated to receive a positive response from my editor, Masja.

Masja encouraged me and gave considerable attention to my submission. The revision process was long, but I never felt alone. Working with Brill was a wonderful experience. I hope to have another opportunity soon.

Yoshinara Yamaguchi

My first book, Metapoesis in the Arabic Tradition, came out in Brill’s series on Middle Eastern literature. I thought this was a great opportunity to join a community of scholars. It was a great experience to work with the series editors, and being part of this series enabled my work to exist in conversation with the series’ earlier works.

H. Fakhreddine

What I discovered publishing with Brill is the professionalism. [...] You have clear lines of communication with the copy, with a typesetter, copyeditors, with the editors themselves, series editors, and the reviewers the entire way. You get several comments on your work to make your final book the best it can be. You get multiple proofs to check to ensure everything is the way it should be. Very few places can offer that level of professionalism.

Ahmad Al-Jallad

I was very excited about this opportunity to be able to publish with Brill, that I know is a great supporter of the arts, of art history, of Ottoman studies, as well. They (editors) have been really helpful in explaining the process, being prompt, and really being very supportive throughout.
