“You are a fan of Formula One right?” That was what Chris said to me when he assigned me to this set. He is absolutely right, I have been following Formula One since the Schumacher and Häkkinen era, and Mercedes has always been one of the team that I am a fan of. Working on this set was very challenging, however our team has been great and was always ready to help.
Attempting to build a sturdy Formula One car in this scale, while keeping to the level of details a Speed Champion set demands doesn’t quite go hand in hand. Having said that, the challenge is most welcome, and I am very pleased with the outcome. The first thing that I needed to establish, is a sturdy main structure that will connects the front and rear wheels robustly, while having a space in the middle for the driver seat. The other challenge is the nose as it is very slender, making it difficult to connect securely to the main structure and the front wing. The aerodynamic shaping of the engine cover which terminates with a small fin at the rear also isn’t something that can be easily replicated in LEGO.
The AMG Project One started with some good sketch models from the team, so taking it through the finish line was slightly easier but not without its challenges. The front bonnet needed to be attached very slightly forward from both headlights, making it just a little out of grid so that it doesn’t end up being a straight line across. However, the large air vents occupied the space needed to properly connect the bonnet, therefore increasing the complexity. The rear vertical shark fin, just like in the Formula One car is also difficult to be replicated in LEGO. Lastly the exhaust and the rear diffuser has some unique shaping that pushes us to come up with some unorthodox building techniques. This project certainly has been tougher than I anticipated, and I hope fans will enjoy building it as much as I did.

The Tumbler was my very first MOC back in 2014 so having it as an official product means the world to me. Many of the solutions I came up with as a MOC are not at all suitable for production so I had to completely redesign the model. The design objective for the model is exactly the same as when I first started my MOC:
• It needs to fit 2 minifigures
• It has to be as accurate as possible
It's funny how upon scrutinizing my earlier model, what I used to think was an accurate representation suddenly no longer appear to be so. The front wheels were too small and the sides of the vehicle need to be angled towards the front. The main challenge for the model remained to be building 2 stable front wheels without a central axle. The new Speed Champion chassis provided the stability while allowing space for 2 minifigures and the new 2x6 angled plates helped to angle the side of the car.
The element I originally used for windscreens (part 6070) though looked great, only has 2 studs therefore did not provide the necessary clutch. The end result of 3 windscreens started as a joke from a casual discussion with Mike, imagine our surprise when they actually fit and turns out to be the solution. The wing element (part 61800) on the side of the car is one that I am most happy about, it is almost perfect in size and shape while provided a secure connection. It is extremely satisfying when the element fit perfectly behind the car spoiler used as the side mudguard. The rear of the car is perhaps the part that stayed closest to the original MOC. The end result is a vehicle that replicated the look of the movie design and also one you can play with, rather vigorously if I might add. And yes, it does come in black.
My heartfelt thanks to Jesper Nielsen, Maarten Simons and Mike Psiaki for their help and guidance. It was graphic designer Mark Tranter's idea to include the 2nd head for Batman (which is awesome!), and provided all the cool graphics.

This LEGO Jurassic World series is loosely based on the animated show. I am a fan of the show, me and my children are always looking forward to the next season. I think the characters are well developed, the animation style looks interesting and the story is engaging. The diversity and inclusion direction of the show is also very much aligned with our brand values.
I like the look of the 6-wheeler from the show so it was fun working on it. The excitement when my children saw the characters from the show as a minifigure is very rewarding, even better when they are able to call out the dinosaurs by their show name Toro, Bumpy and Grim.

The biggest inspiration for me to work on this model is my wife, I saw this as the best opportunity to combine both our passion for music and LEGO together. Donny had some very clever and creative solutions, unfortunately they were not suitable as a LEGO set. We ended up redesigning the model so it would pass our quality and safety standards. However we still wanted to preserve what the fans voted for so the functions, features and overall shape and size of the model remained identical to the original.
I am particularly proud of the piano action, which comprises of the key, hammer and damper. This is largely thanks to guidance from Mike Psiaki and Carl Merriam. Our design balances the key on a cone element (11610) allowing it to pivot like a seesaw. Despite the fact that this will be hidden in the piano, we still made it as authentic as possible.
We introduced the powered up function, which allows you to play music with your LEGO model. Could we have made each key plays a different note? Maybe, but it would most definitely increases the cost and complexity DRASTICALLY. Our solution is a fun interaction toy where pressing any key plays the next note of a music piece. One of which anyone can have fun with, including those who do not know how to play a real piano.
Designing the LEGO Ideas Grand Piano has been a functional, structural, as well as aesthetic challenge. Having many moving parts inter-dependent of one another, and to make sure they works correctly and consistently every time is a real challenge. Even more so when they are built from LEGO bricks.
There are 2 exclusive elements, designed by graphic designer Crystal Marie Fontan. A vintage LEGO logo printed in gold, and a music sheet featuring the song composed by Donny titled “Playday”.
Fun Fact: The working title of this project was “Schroeder”, named after the comic character who is skilled in playing the toy piano.

When we started the concept phase, our Marketing Lead Helene Desprets shared her idea of a brick build Minion that will also function as a playset so that children will be able to bring it with them and have fun anywhere they go. The next day I showed her Kevin and she was elated, saying "this is exactly what I had in mind". The following day I added Stuart and Bob, our design lead liked what he saw and the model stayed pretty much they way it was with some adjustment for stability.
As much as we tried, we could not find any existing element that is suitable to be used as Stuart's monocle since it is slightly larger than Kevin's and Bob's. We ended up making a new 5x5 round element for it. We also made the new 3x3 1/4 circle with cutout to help build the model with better stability. There is also the new 4x4 round brick for Kevin's and Bob's goggles to keep consistency and to better resemble the reference material. There should be quite a few existing elements now available in blue or yellow where they previously were not.
I manage to bring the model to quite a late stage before I was needed in a different project. The model then landed in the good hands of Justin Ramsden and he made it even better by adding more features such as the rotating eyes and finalizing the interior fittings. This is why I absolutely love working in LEGO, teamwork that aims to deliver the best possible toy.
This was definitely a fun build for me, and to be able to hit the mark so early in the project is extremely motivating.

When I was asked if I would like to work on an exclusive set celebrating Chinese New Year, I agreed without any hesitation. CNY is a special occasion when family get together, especially for those who left home to work elsewhere. Growing up, CNY also meant new clothes, lots of delicious food, snacks, fireworks and red packets filled with money :). For 2020 CNY, I get to share the joy of this special occasion through this set I co-designed with Markus Rollbuhler.
It was an absolute pleasure working with Markus, a true tag team effort where we were literally finishing each other's build. Every time when the model was handed over to the other person, we added more details and made the set so much better than before. We ended up with a model filled with so much details and authenticity that I don't even know where to begin describing it. From the "dougong" and intricately printed patterned tiles, to the deliberately differentiated construction of the stalls roof. Everything was designed to capture the vibrancy of CNY as much as possible and to make the set a truly enjoyable build.
We used so many orange 1x1 bow pieces for the temple roof construction, that during design phase we finished all available pieces in our element stock. For sometime we had to replace with other color while waiting for that element to be replenished.
Finally I just wanted to point out a special minigifure in this set that happens to share a certain resemblance to myself :). Special thanks to Justin Ramsden, Austin Carlson and Djordje Djordjevic for making that happen.

This bike was based on a sketch model done by Pablo Gonzales. The stand was added to increase the display value, aiming to be iconic but not distracting from the main model. When building the stand, we were really trying our best to fit in as many icons from Junkertown as we possibly can. Some of these are not even visible on the box, allowing fans the joy of discovering them while building. All of which was done through careful planing and thoughts.
Graphic designer Casper Glahder and I had a blast working on this one, we pretty much successfully got every iconic reference from the game that we wanted into the set. If you haven't noticed it, there's even a reference to Wrecking Ball in there! Our favorite is definitely the Pachimari.
Junkrat's new hair piece provided by Jakob Neilson, and Roadhog by Paul Wood.

This set actually started as a little challenge from me to Luis Castaneda, we had just done D.Va and Reinhardt and we were thinking about what other character we can build. Luis took up the challenge and build a sketch model that got the transformation working and set the basis for the model. After that, Mark Stafford and Niek Van Slagmaat both build a version of it. In the end the final model is an amalgamation of many clever ideas from everyone. We had to emulate the spherical shape, make it convert, keep it simple to build and maintain the structural stability. I had the honor to finish the model, but I wouldn’t have done it without them paving the groundwork.
It is interesting that we all actually build it in grey at the beginning as we thought that's Wrecking Ball's color, we corrected the color after we got the reference from Blizzard.
The adorable Hammond is sculpted by Esa Nousiainen. Graphics provided by Casper Glahder.

Working on this set has taught me so much about designing a building with LEGO bricks and being on the same team with Raph is always amazing because of his willingness to share his knowledge. It is a skill in balancing logical building flow but not being overly repetitive while maintaining structural integrity, at the same time repeating many of the same elements but creating a random appearance. All of which I learned through the regular "sparring" with Raph.
It was a lot of fun trying to squeeze in as many movie references as I can, which is something I absolutely love doing. These include the Infirmary, the Defense Against the Dark Arts classroom, Dumbledore's Office, the Prefects' Bathroom, particularly the mermaid stain glass, the Goblet of Fire, a blackboard that says "Moody", the Sword of Gryffindor, and the Yule Ball ice decorations.
The dancing mechanism was something Samuel Johnson came up with and I thought it would be perfect for this set. The Clock turning mechanism was referenced from the Big Ben model done by Jamie Berard.
All the amazing graphics are provided by Lorraine Faure whom you can spot in one of the paintings behind Dumbledore's desk where she also included Casper Glahder, who is also the graphic designer on the team.

The original model was designed by Design Master Raphael Pretesacque, due to him being needed at another team I was tasked to complete where he left off. Raphael is a great and experienced designer, there was really not much I needed to do other than a few minor adjustments to bring it through the finish line.
Raphael was a joy to work with and I had the pleasure to collaborate with him on the Omnic Bastion set (75987) previously. I am honoured and happy that I get to be a part of a great set he started.

This was my first publishing project as well as a 2-in-1 model so I really wanted to give it my best. For small models, every piece makes a big difference to the model in appearance, proportion and stability. A 2-in-1 model adds another layer of consideration as you are basically working on 2 models at the same time, the pieces you choose therefore needs to work in both models. I went on to give myself another additional challenge to use the whole volume and not have leftover elements when switching from one model to the other.
I really like the idea of building the Sorting Hat Scene in the beginning of the book as you discover which house you belong, and then later rebuilding it to the Fireplace where you can explore Hogwarts using the Floo Network. Some of the elements that made the "magic" happens include the new 2x2 turntabe plate and 4 printed 2x2 tiles House Crests. By swapping the crests on the fireplace, you "travel" from one house to another as you turn the turntable.
Lastly, a 2-in-1 model really shows the versatility of the bricks. As the title of the book said, "Build Your Own Adventure"! The models are merely inspiration in using the bricks to build anything you imagine. :)

I didn’t work on the final model but it was based on a sketch I did. Justin Ramsden did an amazing job to actualize it as a promotional set and I’m thankful that he stayed close to my sketch. Markus Rollbühler did the Quinjet design and Adam Corbally did the graphics.

This is definitely one of my favorite set. I'm a big fan of the game, I love the MEKA design by Blizzard, D.Va was the first sketch model I build for the project and had the honor to carry it through to final product. The design decision to include Reinhardt in the set made it perfect in my opinion.
I went through many iterations before arriving at the final look and couldn't be happier with the result. The new helmet and shoulder armor by Esa Nousiainen added so much more to the model that I otherwise wouldn't have able to achieve. Blizzard was thoroughly involved throughout the entire design process and it was an absolute pleasure working with the game design team.
Through this project not only did I get to work with a very talented team of people, I also got to attend Blizzcon for the very first time and met many amazing people including Darin De Paul (voice actor for Reinhardt) and Matt Mercer (Voice actor for McCree). It has been an absolute joy ride for me!
Crystal Marie Fontan provided those beautiful graphics and Casper Glahder worked on minifigures.

I am extremely proud and happy to be a part of this first LEGO-Blizzard Exclusive. At the beginning of every project, we usually have a "boost" session where designers are to brainstorm or build models they think could potentially be a good product. This was the second model I build after the D.Va mech during that boost. The sketch model was subsequently adopted when the discussion for an exclusive set to commemorate the partnership came up.
Due to the short development time we had for an exclusive product, I partnered with Design Master Raphael Pretesacque as a tag team. I would work on the model for a while, Raphael would then pick up where I left off and then hand it back to me and this process continue until we are both happy with the model. I thoroughly enjoyed the process and learned so much from Raph, it was truly amazing!
Casper Glahder provided the first ever LEGO-Blizzard Exclusive graphics!
