Review: 40334 Avengers Tower

40334 Avengers Tower celebrates the climax of the entire Infinity Saga and is currently available with qualifying purchases at shop.LEGO.com. An impressive rendition of the Avengers' distinctive headquarters is included here and the Iron Man minifigure is unique, hence this set has inspired significant praise from many Marvel fans.

Hopefully this attractive set will prove worthy of such high expectations following its completion.

Minifigure

Numerous versions of Iron Man have been released but the latest example is unusual, featuring a suit which has been partially assembled. LEGO describes this as the Iron Man Mark VIII armour, although the metallic silver highlights appear more akin to the Mark VII armour. However, the Mark XLIII armour does appear in an incomplete form during Avengers: Age of Ultron, loosely resembling this figure.

Regardless of its possible source materials, this minifigure looks great. The torso is intricately detailed, especially on the back where some metallic silver armour is visible. I like the differing arm colours and the clothing underneath resembles that found in 76007 Iron Man: Malibu Mansion Attack. There is no printing on the legs, unfortunately, but that corresponds with Tony's earlier appearance too.

The minifigure includes a tousled hair piece and a helmet with an opening faceplate. Both sides of the head can therefore be used, although I prefer the pale blue heads-up display. Repulsor pieces are not provided but Iron Man does carry a trans-light blue 1x1 round brick, providing somewhere to place the helmet when it is not being worn.

The Completed Model

Exclusive minifigures are always welcome but the primary focus of this set is certainly Avengers Tower itself. Its elegant silhouette has been accurately replicated here, making good use of 3x6 wedge plates which are connected to bricks with studs on the side within. The entire model stands on a curved base that appears rather simple, although its internal structure is remarkably colourful.

The base further increases the height of Avengers Tower, reaching 20cm. It therefore looks wonderful on display and I love the combination between different textures, although the curvature of the smooth dark bluish grey section should be more pronounced. Two printed tiles featuring the Avengers emblem are attached on each side. Their position does not correspond precisely with the films but works nicely for a model of this scale in my opinion.

Layered 2x6 curved plates form the landing platform which is accompanied by a miniature rendition of the Quinjet. This tiny vehicle only contains nine pieces but is instantly recognisable, making ingenious use of Star-Lord's Quad Blasters to replicate the angled wings. A trans-clear aerial connects this craft to Avengers Tower for display while the roof is cleverly constructed using 1x2 grille slopes.

Overall

LEGO has produced several interesting promotional items during the last couple of years and 40334 Avengers Tower is certainly among my favourites. The model looks fantastic when compared with the movies, closely resembling its onscreen counterpart and incorporating impressive texture which helps to break up the predominantly grey colour scheme.

The exclusive Iron Man minifigure is slightly disappointing, although I appreciate the attempt to include something unique rather than reissuing an existing minifigure. I would therefore recommend this set to collectors of the Marvel Super Heroes theme and it might also interest LEGO Architecture enthusiasts.

I'm loving this as a fan of LEGO Architecture. Not sure if I want to keep the minifigure, and might even change that base to look more like other LEGO Architecture sets. Had to purchase some Marvel LEGO which will be kept back for nephew's birthday (still 6 months away), currently still "In Warehouse" - looking forward to its arrival. Would love to see more similarly scaled fictional buildings/settings from movies.

This set is so cool, easily one of the best promos, although Diagon Ally is still my favorite. I might have to buy another new Marvel set now...

@BearsyWeary - I can totally see a llama head.

This is an awesome but odd little set. The armor resembles the Mark 7 the most but the helmet corresponds to the Mark 43. The tower itself looks much more like Stark Tower from The Avengers, but it has the "A" logo from Avengers Tower and the balcony is the one from Avengers Tower. However, there should be a lot more transparent blue if it's supposed to be Avengers Tower. Regardless, it's an amazing promotional item and I'm glad we're getting more Marvel sets!

Save for the thumbnail picture, why do all these pictures appear as if they were taken in 2005? Because the photo quality is quite grainy

I know it just started being produced last year, but I’ve had enough of that Stark head, the first one was perfect and there is no reason to change it. Happy to see Mark VIII(?) considering there is no figure of it although it is a shame there is no figure with complete Mark VIII armor. Hopefully Lego will eventually produce each of the past armour a they didn’t do. Good luck Lego on those Iron Man 3 armors.
