So much better than I expected

Written by (AFOL , bronze-rated reviewer) in Canada,

First off, I don't often write review as I usually find that for the great sets, someone has already written one. Secondly, my first impressions of this set was it seemed overpriced and I'm not really an Avatar fan although I've seen the first movie once.

It must also be said that I got this set on sale, about 40% off which is super rare here in Canada. What originally attracted me was the build for the Tree of Souls as well as the landscape and not the creature or mini/tall/figs.

It features a wonderful assortment of parts and recolours in good quantity to make the tree and landscaping. I can see people making wonderful underwater coral MOCs with this set. The build of the landscaping was really interesting, especially the way the tree was put together. It's very stable and has quite the presence. If you compare it to trees like the HP Whomping Willow Tree, it's so much more impressive. Of interest as well is the way the support/display stand is built up for the creature to eventually sit on. It's well hidden and looks naturally integrated into the rockwork. About the creature build, I'm not too skilled in this area so it provided a really good learning experience for me as well.

About the build, not terribly difficult for kids, but interesting and varied enough for adults. The pink droopy foliage is naturally going to be a bit repetitive, but not as boring as I expected. The final effect is so impressive that it's worth it.

When you do mount the creature, connect all the landscaping and include the tree - it's huge ! Easily as tall as a modular and would be about the area of a 48x48 baseplate. I don't play with my builds, but I could see kids really having fun with the creature as it's very pose-able and stable.

I did buy this on considerable discount, but having built it I would in retrospect paid full price as I think the build, parts, playability and value is that good ! The pictures of the set that Lego has do not do the set proper justice !
