I like Dinosaurs. I like Skeletons.

Natural History Museums were and are my favorite kind, 'cause I love Fossil rooms. Getting to work on this felt very fulfilling. The biggest challenges I came across was designing legs so the T-Rex could stand on its own with out support, and build a body solid enough, that it could survive a classic dinosaur play pattern.

This is the first set I worked on when I started at Lego in 2020. It's a collaboration between me and Nick Vas and was my intro to the Lego Design process. The design brief simply asked for a truck with a “crash function.” I explored multiple techniques to pull this off, like a seesaw that would pop the windshield off. But, they weren’t conducive to car play; too finicky and fragile. Thankfully, we worked together to develop the slider function that would pop off the hood. I still get a kick out of it when I roll my copy into a wall or ram something into it. It can just go flying.

A team up between me and Woon Tze for the design, this set was great to see come to fruition. (Early sketches were done alongside Nick Vas.)

I got to design something us Jurassic Park fans have wanted for a long time; the Ford Explorer. Oh my goodness, what a fun process. This was my first time really trying to capture the image of an existing design. It actually took me back to my brief education in automotive design, identifying the profile that makes the vehicle so iconic and distinct. Aside from capturing the silhouette, I also wanted to make sure, as this set was more for adults, that one could place a realistic amount of Minifigures inside this vehicle. At first this meant I designed a HUGE concept build, and it really dwarfed our already disproportional Minifigure. Bringing it back down to a six-wide build helped it feel more like a LEGO-fied version of the Ford Explorer, something people could put in their LEGO cities, because something else we wanted to ensure, was that every major aspect of this set could be played with.

I also had good fun bringing the T-Rex to life. Similar to 76940, this version of Rexy needed stability outside of the support she got when placed on the base. It was a bit of a whacky time finding the right combination of joints and rock solid construction that would let her stand on her own AND stand dynamically on top of that crushed Explorer. One of the more fulfilling aspects of this design I enjoyed designing is the head. Finding those slopes and bows that form the final result was a delight. I, personally, like that we mount the eyes so they’re at an angle, so she can actually see what’s ahead of her, whether or not her vision is based on movement.

This set is a love letter to one of the most thrilling sequences in cinematic history. I am so happy I got to contribute to it.

This was such a unique design experience. With direction from Marco’s Bessa, 2022’s Harry Potter Advent Calendar was designed to be a celebration of the entire Harry Potter story. On top of designing two mini builds and selecting key characters from each movie installment, we also worked together to create a pvp style game to play once each build is constructed.

The inspiration for this idea came from my previous experience as a fan builder when I built micro scale buildings, Ollivander’s being one of the first builds I did for the calendar. From there, I began to consider what other key moments we could depict in a similar fashion.

The game is all about creating a timeline, plucking these iconic moments from a collective Pensieve. Using the top, players can either collect a moment, lose a moment, or steal a moment from their opponent. The first player to collect a moment from each movie is the winner. I hope people have fun playing the game together and enjoy the micro builds we came up with.

With this being my favorite scene of the movie and creature of Pandora, getting to design this set was a blast. I went through a lot of iterations to find the most solid way to depict the slender form of the Ikran as well as wing frame shape to best display the amazing graphic design work.

A primary goal of the Avatar line was to create disPLAYable sets, hence why every set comes with an environment build and why this set depicts a portion of the Floating Mountains. It was a nice, spatial challenge finding the composition that can support two flying creatures.

This set was a very interesting design challenge, as we had a real back and forth regarding the new element design. From the get go, we were put on the molded head direction, and that meant we had to collaborate to find right shape that would transition well into the brick-built body. in order to give the body the ability to bend like a whale, I took a note from 75936, looking at how the neck joint was designed, and I think having that bend in the body really helps bring the Tulkun to life.

Then, next to Payakan, we have the Crabsuit, a design I adored since it was first shared on their socials. We explored multiple sizes for it, and took this direction when I paired 6280337 with 4658974. The windshield shape forms well with the slopes. That became the core from which I could find what bows best form the shape of the vehicle. Plus, it can fold up to become a submarine. Now I can technically say I've designed a Transformers haha!

This set was my primary responsibility for the Jurassic Park anniversary line. First of all, I want to say the premise of doing a whole line of Jurassic Park sets was a dream come true. Jurassic Park is the best blockbuster ever made. That is an opinion that cannot be swayed, so I felt extreme giddiness when I found out we were doing this. I think it presents a great opportunity for parents to bond with their kids over this great film. I did so many sketch models for what could make up this line. Not many made it through, haha, but, from day one, we knew we would do the iconic Jeep Wrangler.

76960 is, of course, meant to represent the scene where Grant and Sattler see their first living Dinosaur. However, we wanted to cover as much of the film as possible, so we crafted a tree that could exhibit three major moments. Aside from the Brach’s introduction, it also serves as the spot where Grant, and Lex and Tim feed one as well as where they discover the animals are breeding. But, wait, there’s more to this set than the tree.

Having previously designed the Ford Explorer, I really wanted a go at the Jeep Wrangler. First, similar to the Brach, we had multiple conversations about what it’s color scheme is. We came to 194 when we felt 05 was far too rich. Now, we also wanted a Jeep for the Nedry scene, but the age ranges were different per set. An interesting collaboration took place, where we worked to make sure key design elements were the same, while the builds are quite different. As a fan of both Jurassic Park and Lego toys, getting to create Lego play theme versions of the two iconic JP vehicles is surreal. I hope people have fun recreating so many JP moments or tell their own stories. Maybe this time EVERYBODY LIVES.

Bricklist notes
Escape from the Lost Tomb is my love letter to the Lego sets of my youth. I designed this set to be an homage to lines like Lego Studios and Lego Adventurers, as well as to the coveted Lego 2x4 brick.
I can just picture the Spielberg minifig standing to the side with his megaphone and camera, calling for certain play functions to activate so the scene can play out the way users want.

I watched this scene over and over again to mark down key play features that we needed. Of course, the falling Jackal Statue, but then, we should have the hole where snakes fall out, indicating to Indy there is a back room. And, once you break down the wall, what’s back there? The freaky mummy!

It is so cool to me, that I got to work on sets for these films that I love so much. Like a bunch of others, I was probably shown this movie at too young an age. But, the thrill of its adventure is so enrapturing, and my goal with this set is to give kids the ability to make their own thrilling adventure.

We all love a solid, pocket-sized dino, and the Pyroraptor is probably one of the cooler dinosaurs to depict in this minimal form, using a bright combination of colors as well as slopes, bows, and angled elements. This build also pairs very well with the Dilophosauraus magazine build I was responsible for.

So, I really enjoy designing LEGO cars. Since the Ford Explorer in 76956, it is my goal that every six-wide vehicle, I work on, can seat minifigures side by side. For 76424, it was almost the most important thing to accomplish since it would be the key detail to differentiate it from its predecessors. This lead to a lot of exploration to find the best plate layering sequence for stability and to match our source material as well as we have before. But, that’s not the only aspect I’m excited about.

We have a new element to introduce; the new 1x2x2/3, the grated slope with out the grates. I cannot wait to see how builders use this piece to their advantage. It’s something I’ve wanted for a long time from the LEGO Group, and I’m thrilled a set I worked on is the one to debut it.

First and foremost, this is a compact vehicle for the kids who enjoy rolling cars around, perhaps making them go “whoosh” in the sky. Although, there’s a disclaimer; the invisibility booster may be faulty.

Based off of its depiction from Philosopher’s Stone, this fully enclosed Hut was a real learning opportunity. Building walls on an angle and creating a convincing circular roof proved a good challenge to learn new techniques and systems that exist within our own. My colleagues really came through, showing me these new ways of thinking.

Developing the interior involved analysis of movie clips and figuring out a way to bring in the colors of each Hogwarts House. The expansion feature of the play area took a few iterations, but once the walls were figured out, the three section concept came to be. On top of this, George Gilliat was developing 76432, and we put in two spots at the front of Hagrid’s home that can connect to those set’s different sections.

76428 was a major development milestone in my career at the LEGO Group, being an incredibly collaborative design process. I cannot wait to learn more.

Maybe this is an odd thing to say, but this is my favorite set I designed for this year. I really like spiders…from a distance, haha! But, for real, I think they’re so freaky and cool in design. So, getting to design a new iteration of Aragog was really fun.

I grew up mostly building and playing with smaller scale products, so I really take to designing these kinds of sets. I really tried to emulate the anatomy of a spider as best I could, in this style. Adding details, like his pedipalps, really helps it feel a bit more authentic. On top of that, collaborating with one of our graphic designers to create a printed bow for Aragog’s face really brings the guy to life. That movie face of his is so memorable. But wait, there’s a little more.

There’s that little bit of a Forbidden Forest to go with 76432. When we started designing this set, making it an add on to the FF set was a no brainer. But, we made some specific choices. 76432 has glow in the dark elements and a specific lay out for it clips. To convey how deep in the forest the characters go to find Aragog, we flipped the clips, and removed the glow in the dark pieces. So, when you line up this FF bit with the rest of them, the “back” of the module will show a web between two branches.

I love it when lines have sets that interact with each other, so this wave 2 of 2024 is among my favorite I got to be a part of.

Bricklist notes
The year 2023 held a lot of challenges for me. Give me a spider or car build any day, but a rounded hut or a portion of a castle? I’m gonna be daunted. The Great Hall, much like 76428, offered some great challenges for me to figure out, mainly structure. As a fan, I never built big, hence my comfortability in the aforementioned smaller sets. So, from the start, I was intimidated by this project. That all being said, I am very satisfied with where we ended up. I extend a major thank you to the team for the support they gave me, showing me new techniques and reminding me to embrace the power of the LEGO System.

“Simple, yet effective” is my take on this depiction of the Great Hall. By going to this scale, we could fit in more detail through very consumable build techniques. The design itself is also segmented to make it a modular kind of build that a family or friends could break up and build together, making a proverbial voltron of Great Halls, including small rooms that slot into the rock formation or become play areas of their own.

The bottom rooms came from an intention to provide players with extra play areas as well customization options. They’re built to be vignette-like, with their walls being more abstract vs “realistic,” like 76431, and their ability to open, providing the mentioned play areas. With this direction, we feel the rooms can act stand alone, to the side, creating an action scene depicting the troll, or a study session in the Hufflepuff room. Then, if you feel inclined to change your Hall, you can swap out the Common room or Bathroom with Potions Class.

76435 is the true start to our “most detailed Hogwarts” (play set edition), and I think fans are in for a treat. We really put a lot of effort into this new direction, and I hope it comes across.
