"Advertising broker Xandr (a Microsoft subsidiary) collects and shares the personal data of millions of Europeans for detailed targeted advertising. This allows Xandr to auction off advertising space to thousands of advertisers. But: although only one ad is ultimately shown to users, all advertisers receive their data. This may include personal details concerning their health, sexuality or political opinions. Also, despite selling its service as “targeted”, the company holds rather random information: the complainant apparently is both a man, a woman, employed and unemployed. This could allow Xandr to sell ad space to multiple companies who think that they are targeting a specific group. As if that were not enough, Xandr does not comply with a single access request. noyb has now filed a GDPR complaint." #Privacy #GDPR #dataprotection #Microsoft #TargetedAdvertising #Xandr Subscribe to EDPO's newsletter here: https://lnkd.in/dwK8sde *This article was not written by EDPO. "The Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA), the governing body for global motorsports including Formula 1, has experienced a significant cybersecurity breach. A phishing attack compromised two email accounts, leading to unauthorized access to personal data. Upon discovering the breach, the FIA quickly terminated the unauthorized access and reported the incident to data protection authorities in France and Switzerland. However, the organization has not yet revealed the specifics of the stolen data, the extent of the breach, or the number of individuals affected." #Privacy #GDPR #dataprotection #F1 #FIA Subscribe to EDPO's newsletter here: https://lnkd.in/dwK8sde *This article was not written by EDPO. "The EU is working on a Digital Euro. It’s intended as a public, data-minimising alternative to current payment services – both online and in the corner shop. The European Central Bank (ECB) is currently preparing the practical implementation, while the EU institutions are working on the required law. All of this does not yet decide whether there will actually be a Digital Euro – the final decision is up to the ECB – but it will set the framework for the new digital currency. […] A central, controversial topic in the Council discussions is privacy. This is clear in working documents which we have received through a freedom of information request. Many member states seem to realise that a high level of privacy is decisive for whether the Digital Euro will be successful." #Privacy #GDPR #dataprotection #DigitalEuro Subscribe to EDPO's newsletter here:https://lnkd.in/dwK8sde *This article was not written by EDPO. "The Spanish government has a plan to prevent kids from watching porn online: Meet the porn passport. Officially (and drily) called the Digital Wallet Beta (Cartera Digital Beta), the app Madrid unveiled on Monday would allow internet platforms to check whether a prospective smut-watcher is over 18. Porn-viewers will be asked to use the app to verify their age. Once verified, they'll receive 30 generated “porn credits” with a one-month validity granting them access to adult content. Enthusiasts will be able to request extra credits. While the tool has been criticized for its complexity, the government says the credit-based model is more privacy-friendly, ensuring that users' online activities are not easily traceable." #Privacy #GDPR #dataprotection #PornPassport #Spain Subscribe to EDPO's newsletter here: https://lnkd.in/dwK8sde *This article was not written by EDPO. "The European Commission plans to allow the providers of ChatGPT-like artificial intelligence (AI) models to write codes of practice that will determine their compliance in the short to medium term, with civil society in a consultation role. Civil society organisations have wondered for the past few months whether they will be involved in Codes of Practice for general-purpose AI models (GPAI), sources with knowledge of the matter told Euractiv. In the meantime, Euractiv has been made aware that the European Commission has been looking for consulting firms to draft these codes." #Privacy #GDPR #dataprotection #AI Subscribe to EDPO's newsletter here: https://lnkd.in/dwK8sde *This article was not written by EDPO. "Meta was charged Monday with violating Europe’s sweeping tech competition law by forcing customers into a restrictive “pay or consent” model for ads on Instagram and Facebook — escalating a longstanding beef over user privacy. Billionaire Mark Zuckerberg’s firm rankled regulators by rolling out a subscription service last year in which users could pay the equivalent of $14 per month for an ad-free experience on the apps – or consent to Meta using their personal data for targeted ads. If Meta is confirmed to have breached the law, the company could face fines of up to 10% of its total worldwide revenue – a figure that could amount to nearly $13.5 billion, given the company’s global sales in 2023 totaled $134.90 billion." #Privacy #GDPR #dataprotection #Meta Subscribe to EDPO's newsletter here: https://lnkd.in/dwK8sde *This article was not written by EDPO. "More and more sports franchises are playing ball with biometric ticketing options for fans. Major League Baseball (MLB) and European soccer leagues have thus far led the way. But much as biometric systems are seeing increasing pickup in retail and transportation settings, a transformational wave of biometric ticketing deployments across the sporting world seems likely, if not inevitable – despite ongoing concerns from privacy advocates that facial recognition and other biometrics-based access control systems are a risk to personal privacy. EU football clubs have also proven to be keen experimenters with biometric access control. In the Belgian Pro League, the Planet Group Arena (formerly Ghelamco Arena) in Ghent ran a trial of palm-based ticketing with Perfect ID and palm vein biometrics firm Palmki. Likewise, Veridas has provided biometric access control systems at El Sadar stadium in Spain, currently home to La Liga’s Osasuna football club. Italy’s Lega Serie A has plans to implement facial recognition at all of its clubs’ stadiums." #Privacy #GDPR #dataprotection #Football #BiometricData Subscribe to EDPO's newsletter here: https://lnkd.in/dwK8sde *This article was not written by EDPO. "Russian hackers who broke into Microsoft's (MSFT.O), systems and spied on staff inboxes earlier this year also stole emails from its customers, the tech giant said on Thursday, around six months after it first disclosed the intrusion. The disclosure underscores the breadth of the breach as Microsoft faces increasing regulatory scrutiny over the security of its software and systems against foreign threats. An allegedly Chinese hacking group that separately breached Microsoft last year stole thousands of U.S. government emails." #Privacy #GDPR #dataprotection #Microsoft Subscribe to EDPO's newsletter here: https://lnkd.in/dwK8sde *This article was not written by EDPO. “[…] There is a worrying trend towards a technically possible, though ethically and legally questionable use of some neurotechnologies within a constantly evolving market of services. For example, several multinational companies use neuromarketing research services to measure human brain reaction to ads or products. […] The use of artificial intelligence (‘AI’) systems may also make technically possible exploitation of neurodata for purposes such as law enforcement, screening of migrants and asylum seekers, as well as by private entities for instance for workplace or commercial surveillance. In this context, it is important to underline that that certain uses of neurodata pose unacceptable risks to fundamental rights and are likely unlawful under EU law." “Meta is no stranger to controversy. Last year, it was fined a record €1.2 billion for breaching EU data protection rules. Now the tech giant has paused the rollout of its AI assistant in Europe, after the Irish Data Protection Commission told Meta to postpone its plan to use data from Facebook and Instagram adult users to train large language models. ‘We said, ‘It's sad that is your point of view. We believe it could be a different view, but you are the regulator.’ So, we pause everything and we have postponed some specific tools, what we call Meta AI, for the EU,’ Laurent Solly, Vice President (Southern Europe) at Meta, told Euronews Next at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity.” #Privacy #GDPR #dataprotection #MetaAI Subscribe to EDPO's newsletter here: https://lnkd.in/dwK8sde *This article was not written by EDPO.
