#AI represents the “biggest commercial opportunity” in today’s economy, according to research from #PwC, which predicts that global GDP will be 14 per cent higher in 2030 because of it, the equivalent of an additional €14.6 trillion. #Meta says there’s a huge opportunity in the “super competitive” artificial intelligence market, with the tech giant spending up to €37 billion this year on developing infrastructure. “There is a specific view in the EU, we are discussing, but we respect the decision.” The regulator move came as Austria privacy organisation #NOYB filed complaints with #privacy watchdogs in eleven EU member states, alleging Meta’s practices were not compliant with the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (#GDPR). Describing it as a “step backwards” for #European #innovation, Meta says it remains highly confident that its approach complies with European laws and regulations.

This initiative aims to improve the model’s performance by reflecting diverse languages, geography, and cultural references from Europe. Meta assures that only public content from users aged 18+ will be used, excluding private messages. They cite “Legitimate Interests” under GDPR as their legal basis. However, this move has raised significant privacy concerns in the EU, known for strict data protection norms. Critics, led by Noyb, argue it may still infringe on privacy rights, leading to complaints across Europe. Echoing some of my thoughts on the #eu #aiact earlier in the year, there seems to be some rapid "feedback" on the act coming into place, with #meta planning to not release all the features their more advanced #ai model, a multi-modal version of #llama. Meta have concerns over the "unpredictable" behaviour of regulators, coming soon after it was ordered to stop training its models on posts from #facebook and #instagram users in the #eu. This potentially opens up more opportunities for #artificialintelligence development in the #UK for anybody wanting to leverage this technology. However, as the UK also complies with the #gdpr, perhaps we will also get similar treatment in the near future.
