Florida Panthers move to Scripps for local TV

The Florida Panthers are taking their local telecasts over the air with Scripps Sports after agreeing with Diamond Sports Group to terminate their deal that has seen games air on the Bally Sports Florida regional sports network. In addition to games airing on Scripps-owned stations in the Miami-Ft. Lauderdale (WSFL-TV), West Palm Beach (WHDT-TV) and Ft. Myers (station TBA) designated markets, the Panthers and Scripps will be 50-50 partners on a direct-to-consumer streaming service that will include live games and ancillary content.

Financial terms of the Panthers’ new deal with Scripps were not disclosed, but Scripps Sports President Brian Lawlor confirmed the station group will pay a rights fee to the reigning Stanley Cup champions. SBJ reported that the Panthers earned at least $12M a year under their deal with Diamond Sports Group, but that was agreed upon prior to the RSN group filing for bankruptcy last year.

Teams making the move from cable RSNs to over-the-air stations typically see their rights fee decline but gain stability amid the decline of the RSN model and vastly increased distribution. Under the Scripps deal, Panthers games will be available in 2.6 million households in South Florida, which is believed to be at least double the reach of Bally Sports Florida. Panthers Chief Strategy Officer Mark Zarthar touted the trickle-down benefits the added broadcast reach will have on other lines of business, most notably sponsorship.

Lawlor said Scripps, which will handle production for Panthers games, plans to retain as many people from the team’s Bally Sports broadcast team as possible while giving the telecasts a refreshed look.

Scripps Sports has now signed the past two Stanley Cup champions. Last summer, the Golden Knights became the first NHL team to go over the air under a deal with Scripps. Scripps said the Golden Knights have seen viewership double season-over-season when considering those tuning in on broadcast and via direct-to-consumer streaming. Lawlor said he expects the Panthers could see a similar increase, particularly given the team’s recent surge in popularity amid back-to-back runs to the Stanley Cup Final.

In addition to the Panthers and Golden Knights, the Utah Hockey Club also has a deal with Scripps that it inherited from the Coyotes.

NHL releases full 2024-25 regular-season schedule

By Alex Silverman
NHL

The NHL unveiled its schedule for the 2024-25 regular season, which will run from Oct. 4 through April 17. While the NHL and NHLPA have reportedly had preliminary discussions about potential changes that would see the league start and end its season earlier, the new schedule footprint closely resembles that of 2023-24. Ending the season earlier in either 2025 or 2026 would be difficult to accommodate given planned breaks for the inaugural 4 Nations Face-Off this coming season and the Milan-Cortana Games in 2026.

The 2024-25 season will open in Prague, where the Devils and Sabres will play a pair of Global Series games on Oct. 4 and Oct. 5 at O2 Arena. There will also be Global Series games the next month when Stars and Panthers play on consecutive days in Finland.
ESPN will carry the season’s first three games on North American soil on Oct. 8 as an exclusive tripleheader kicked off by Kraken-Blues at 4:30pm ET. At 7 pm the Stanley Cup-winning Panthers will raise their first championship banner against the Bruins, and at 10 pm, and the Utah Hockey Club will play its first game against the Blackhawks at Delta Center. The league will take a 12-day break in February for the 4 Nations Face-Off. To accommodate the competition, which will be held in Boston and Montreal, there will not be an All-Star Game in 2025.

The league will hold two outdoor games this season. The Winter Classic, which has traditionally been played on New Year’s Day, is moving to New Year’s Eve. The game at Wrigley Field will see the Blackhawks host the Blues. The Stadium Series will take place on March 1 with the Blue Jackets hosting their first-ever outdoor game at Ohio Stadium against the Red Wings in a pro hockey proxy for the Ohio State-Michigan rivalry.

Former players sue NCAA, Turner for NIL violations

Over a dozen former men's college basketball players, including Mario Chalmers, Jason Terry and Ryan Boatright, are suing the NCAA, six conferences and Turner Sports Interactive "for the unauthorized use of their name, image and likeness in March Madness advertisements." The class-action lawsuit, which was filed in the U.S. District Court -- Southern District of N.Y., includes the Big East, Pac-12, Big Ten, Big 12, SEC and ACC. Chalmers' 3-pointer for Kansas with 2.1 seconds left in the 2008 national championship game, which forced overtime against Memphis, is known as "Mario's Miracle" and is "played annually during March Madness highlight montages" (YAHOO SPORTS, 7/2).

NRL selects teams for 2025 Las Vegas games

Australia's National Rugby League announced that the Canberra Raiders and Penrith Panthers will "host home games in Las Vegas" next season. They will face the New Zealand Warriors and the Cronulla Sharks, respectively, "in the second installment of Round Zero." The matchups will be "confirmed as early as Wednesday after going through an exhaustive process that began months ago." The Raiders were "a logical fit given the Las Vegas Raiders are based at Allegiant Stadium" (Sydney DAILY TELEGRAPH, 7/1).

The Warriors are "excited by the opportunity, in what will be a chance for commercial growth, given the pockets of support they already have in the United States." The team is "counting on a significant number of Kiwis who will make the journey." The Warriors are seen as "a trump card for the NRL in their attempts to grow the brand, given they have much wider appeal than the average suburban Sydney club" (NEW ZEALAND HERALD, 7/1).

Toledo to add women's rowing program in '25

By Ben Portnoy

Univ. of Toledo athletics
Toledo is adding a new varsity sport for the first time since 1995.

The schools is set to add a women's rowing program beginning in 2025-26, a source told SBJ today. The school officially announced the program's addition later in the day.

“Women’s rowing will create new opportunities for female student-athletes, will bring a significant number of high achieving students from Ohio and around the country to our campus, and will be financially beneficial for the University," Toledo AD Bryan Blair, a 2024 SBJ Forty under 40 honoree, said in a news release. "Moreover, women’s rowing will help grow and nurture new relationships within the Toledo community by enhancing the footprint of Toledo Athletics in downtown Toledo.”

Toledo adding rowing might come as a major surprise amid discussions around revenue sharing and athlete compensation in college athletics at-large that is forcing departments to find ways to save costs. That said, Toledo's efforts are part of an ongoing mutually beneficial vision between campus and athletics at the school to drive enrollment and support athletics more fully.

As part of rowing's addition at Toledo, no resources are expected to be reallocated from any of the school's current varsity sports, while infrastructure and other associated overhead are anticipated to be low.

The team will practice and compete on the Maumee River and will utilize the Philip LeBoutillier, Jr. Memorial Boathouse in International Park in downtown Toledo. The boathouse is owned by Metroparks Toledo and is operated by the Toledo Rowing Foundation.

Women’s rowing is currently offered at 92 other Division I schools, including Ohio State, Dayton, Notre Dame, Eastern Michigan, Indiana, Louisville, West Virginia and Duquesne, among others.
