LA28 updates venue plan with iconic L.A. spots

Changes to LA28's venue plan include big adjustments and some of the biggest venues in the country.

LA28 will put swimming in SoFi Stadium -- not only giving the sport the newest NFL stadium and the biggest venue it has seen with a 38,000-seat capacity, but also requiring organizers to shift the typical Games schedule.

Traditionally, swimming events take place during the first week of the competition while track and field events are contested during the back half of the Games. But for L.A., that won't be possible with SoFi Stadium being part of the opening ceremony, along with L.A. Memorial Coliseum. So Games organizers will use the stadium for opening -- with the pools covered up -- and track and field takes center stage that first week.

"We think swimming, clearly one of the most popular Olympic sports, merits this additional seating capacity, along with all the best-in-class technological capabilities and comforts that will benefit athletes and fans," said LA28 chairperson Casey Wasserman.

"We have studied this carefully and believe that the positive impact of the schedule swap will extend far beyond the two sports involved. It will strengthen the LA28 Games by drawing increased viewership from the outset and benefit the entire sports program of LA 2028."

The idea is one that gets a boost from swimming trials for the Paris Olympics continuing through this week in Lucas Oil Stadium. That venue has a capacity of 32,000 for the event, representing the biggest venue ever for swimming, and has set world records for attendance.

"For the sport, it’s a magnificent outcome. I think for the popularity of that event in the Games, I think that’s a tremendous outcome," said Gene Sykes, chairman of the USOPC. "It is an adjustment, but frankly I think it’s going to be received very well by athletes and others when they understand the quality of the venues and the quality of the support system for athletes that is planned for LA28."

Swimming was among many other noteworthy changes from what organizers planned when they bid in 2017.

LA28 will look to Oklahoma City to host two sports -- softball, because a permanent venue in California seats 2,000 and is below expected demand; and canoe slalom, because no permanent venue exists in the western U.S. IOC recommendations encourage hosts to use existing venues even if they are not in the host city or region.

Wasserman said LA28 has assured that athletes in those sports will be able to participate in the opening or closing ceremony.

Several other hosts have had events far from the host city, especially in team sports with preliminary rounds. Paris has surfing in Tahiti, sailing in Marseille and basketball and soccer games around the country. Wasserman sees the inclusion of Oklahoma City as a similar step.

"LA is weird that we can do all these things here, but what it would require to do all these things here were things that we have committed from the beginning that we weren’t going to do which was build venues just for the Olympics that had no purpose post the Olympic Games," Wasserman said, "so we’re really taking advantage of all the incredible facilities we have, in California, in Southern California but also in the entire country."

For many of its events, LA28 will look to its wealth of venues -- some of which did not exist when it bid. (LA28 does not use corporate names for the venues but they are included here for clarity).

Gymnastics will be held in the Crypto.com Arena, home of the Lakers and Sparks. Basketball will be held in the Intuit Dome, future home of the Clippers.

Track and field and Para track and field will remain at L.A. Memorial Coliseum.

"LA28 will host athletics, gymnastics, swimming and basketball at some of the best stadiums in the world, which all exist today and once again, nothing new to build," Wasserman said.

The changes in venues reduce costs of temporary builds and are expected to have an estimated $156M in cost savings or increased revenue opportunities.

The city of L.A. must approve changes to venues that move competitions outside of the city.

LA28 has yet to announce changes that assign venues to new sports organizers have added for their edition of the Games. While L.A. would have a wealth of those for baseball, for instance, T20 cricket remains the biggest question mark as L.A. does not have a venue that can accommodate that. Wasserman said LA28 will assess the schedule and field use before deciding on a temporary venue for the sport.

A list of all changes is below:

Moving out of the city of L.A. -- requires city approval
  • Olympic Swimming to Inglewood
  • Paralympic Swimming to Long Beach
  • Olympic Artistic Swimming to Long Beach
  • Olympic Basketball to Inglewood
  • Olympic Canoe Slalom to Oklahoma City
  • Olympic and Paralympic Equestrian to Temecula
  • Olympic and Paralympic Shooting to existing venue outside of L.A.
Moving into the city of L.A. -- does not require city approval
  • Olympic Diving to existing venue in L.A.
  • Olympic and Paralympic Archery to the Sepulveda Basin
  • Olympic BMX Freestyle to the Sepulveda Basin
  • Olympic BMX Racing to the Sepulveda Basin
  • Olympic Gymnastics (Artistic, Rhythmic, Trampoline) to Downtown L.A.
  • Olympic Skateboarding Park to the Sepulveda Basin

Heath, Press reviving digital show for Paris Games

Former USWNT players Christen Press and Tobin Heath are reviving their series, the RE-CAP show, "just in time for this summer’s Olympics." The show was originally launched last year ahead of the Women’s World Cup as both players "dealt with long-term injuries." The original series, which spanned eight episodes, saw each episode garner "views in the hundreds of thousands." The show is "an extension of RE-INC.," the company that Heath and Press started in 2019 with fellow soccer players Megan Rapinoe and Meghan Klingenberg (AP, 6/21).

Activision to advertise with TKO's UFC, WWE assets

By Adam Stern

“Call of Duty” signage was spotted in the UFC Octagon at last weekend’s UFC Fight Night at the Apex venue in Las VegasUFC
Activision has signed a sponsorship with TKO Group Holdings to advertise across UFC and WWE for the first time, the sort of arrangement that Endeavor CEO Ari Emanuel had in mind when he formed TKO last year. The deal is a short-term pact meant to promote “Call of Duty: Mobile,” and it was never formally announced. But TKO confirmed it to SBJ after “Call of Duty” signage was spotted in the UFC Octagon at last weekend’s UFC Fight Night at the Apex venue in Las Vegas.

TKO VP/Entertainment & Digital Global Partnerships Alex Kaptsan said the deal involves several events for UFC and WWE this month, including UFC 303 next weekend at T-Mobile Arena, WWE Clash At The Castle last weekend in Scotland, and an upcoming WWE Friday Night SmackDown. Assets include TV-visible signage, broadcast integrations and even a mention from UFC in-ring announcer Bruce Buffer. Activision, which is now owned by Microsoft, has advertised with UFC before but this is the first time it did a deal across TKO’s assets since the holding company was founded in 2023. Kaptsan noted that in the past, Activision usually advertised with UFC on console video games, whereas now it’s promoting mobile video games.

He added: “From our point of view, we were able to deliver them an audience that is pretty difficult to find -- we’re great at reaching those cord-cutting, younger-skewing folks who play video games of all genres, so it’s a nice and natural partnership that benefits fans of Activision titles and UFC and WWE fans.” TKO Group set up the deal in part through RedSnap Inc., the media buying agency of Activision. EA Sports holds the license for UFC’s video game, while 2K Sports (Take-Two Interactive) holds the license for WWE’s signature video game.

UFC this week also announced a five-year extension with Jose Cuervo for mid seven figures per year. Kaptsan said the short-term Activision deal and the longer-term Cuervo renewal “sort of underscores just the effectiveness we can bring to our partners both long term and short term.” TKO Group was trading at $106.56 at presstime, up $1.19, or 1.13%, from Thursday.

Wizards shout out D.C. in new alternate uniforms

Wizards
The Wizards unveiled "a new alternate uniform for the 2024-25 season" today, and the "D.C. flag-inspired threads ... feature a navy base with three red stars above two red bars on the front of the jersey, with 'the District of Columbia' and the player’s number in white." The "bold but simple design is replicated on the shorts," with the flag pattern "repeated on the right thigh and the Wizards’ familiar Washington Monument-inside-a-basketball logo on the left thigh." The word "Washington" will be "featured on the waistband." The navy design is the Wizards' "latest Statement Edition uniform," which Nike introduced in 2017 to "highlight the core identity and heritage" of each team. The Wizards will debut their new Statement Edition uniform in November and it will "remain part of the team’s rotation for at least the next three seasons" (WASHINGTON POST, 6/21).

City eyes new Panthers, Charlotte FC stadium in '46

Tepper Sports & Entertainment and the city of Charlotte have proposed a renovation plan for Bank of America Stadium that would see the city contribute $650M toward an $800M revampTepper Sports & Entertainment
While the city of Charlotte is "still weighing" spending hundreds of millions to renovate Bank of America Stadium, city leaders are "looking at the next step a few decades down the line" -- a new stadium for the Panthers and Charlotte FC. The agenda for Monday’s Charlotte City Council meeting reveals that the city "is eyeing 2046 for a new stadium," and the city "will start negotiating with Tepper Sports & Entertainment by April 1, 2037." A "new funding source may be necessary" for the new stadium, which "would be located inside the city." The city says it will "negotiate the use of hospitality funds for studies and analysis regarding a new stadium." At this point in time, it’s "not clear how much a new stadium would cost, or how much the city would look to invest into the project." It’s also "not known if the new stadium would retain the Bank of America name" (WSOCTV.com, 6/21).
