Behavioral Intervention Teams (BIT)

NYU is committed to maintaining a campus environment that is safe and secure for all students, staff, faculty, and visitors. As part of this commitment, the University has two Behavioral Intervention Teams focusing on students and employees respectively.

Mission

NYU’s Behavioral Intervention Teams (BIT) are multidisciplinary groups committed to the success, well-being, and safety of the NYU community. The groups work collaboratively to identify and support individuals in distress. The teams also assess and manage situations where an individual may pose a threat of violence to the NYU community.

Behavioral Intervention Teams are not intended to replace standard classroom management techniques or modify existing disciplinary policies and processes. Instead, they serve to centralize the reporting of concerning behavior, promote early intervention, and ensure follow-up on relevant cases.

Team Members

The teams are composed of key personnel at NYU who have:

Capacity to quickly gather crucial information
Training to make professional assessments leveraging both clinical and nonclinical resources
Authority to take immediate interim measures as necessary

Team members have training and experience in threat and risk assessment, utilizing the latest industry standards and evidence-based assessment tools.

When to Submit a Report

You should submit a report to the BIT if a member of the NYU community member is exhibiting concerning behavior, such as:

Disruptive or erratic behavior
Disturbing comments in conversation, email, letters, social media postings or papers
Intimidating or harassing others including making disturbing or threatening phone calls, text messages, emails, social media postings, etc.
Emotional outbursts (e.g. yelling or screaming)
Suggesting an intention to harm others (verbal or written)
Sad, anxious, angry or other dramatic mood shifts
Isolation from others
Substance Abuse

Other Types of Reports

I want to report a violation of NYU student policies to the Office of Student Conduct.
I want to report an allegation of sexual misconduct to the Title IX Office.
I want to report bias or discrimination to the Office of Equal Opportunity.
I want to report a security concern to the Department of Campus Safety.
I want NYU to help me file a report with the police or other external agencies.
