Four faculty members have been elected into the National Academy of Sciences:

  • Fedor A. Bogomolov, professor of mathematics, Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences
  • Paul DiMaggio, professor, Department of Sociology, Arts and Science 
  • Benjamin G. Neel, Laura and Isaac Perlmutter Director of the Laura and Isaac Perlmutter Cancer Center and professor, Department of Medicine, NYU Langone Health
  • Michael J. Shelley, Lilian and George Lyttle Professor of Applied Mathematics at the Courant Institute and co-founder and co-director of the Courant Institute’s Applied Mathematics Laboratory

Eight faculty members have been named fellows of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences:

  • Cristina M. Alberini, professor of neural science, Arts and Science
  • Richard R.W. Brooks, Emilie M. Bullowa Professor of Law, School of Law
  • Oskar Eustis, arts professor, Tisch School of the Arts’ Rita and Burton Goldberg Department of Dramatic Writing and artistic director of the Public Theater
  • Sherry Glied, dean and professor of Public Service, Wagner Graduate School of Public Service
  • Robert I. Grossman, chief executive officer of NYU Langone Health and dean of NYU Grossman School of Medicine
  • Fred Moten, professor, Department of Performance Studies, Tisch School of the Arts
  • Salman Rushdie, distinguished writer in residence, Carter Journalism Institute
  • Bambi B. Schieffelin, professor emerita of anthropology, Arts and Science

Two professors have been awarded Pulitzer Prizes for achievements in history. 

  • Nicole Eustace, professor of history, Arts and Science, won for ”Covered with Night: A Story of Murder and Indigenous Justice in Early America.”
  • Ada Ferrer, Julius Silver Professor of History and Latin American and Caribbean History, Arts and Science, won for "Cuba: An American History."

José A. Pagán, professor and chair of the Department of Public Health Policy and Management at Global Public Health, has been elected as a member of the National Academy of Medicine. He is recognized for his leadership in aligning health care delivery, payment, and social systems to address health equity, and specifically for understanding ripple effects of uninsurance in U.S. communities. 

Bill de Blasio, the former mayor of New York City, will join NYU’s Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service as the 2023 Marnold Visiting Fellow. Arriving in January, he will give formal talks, engage directly with students, faculty, and alumni, and teach a graduate course in the spring. 

Fabienne Doucet, the executive director of the Metropolitan Center for Research on Equity and the Transformation of Schools at NYU and an associate professor of early childhood education and urban education at NYU Steinhardt has been named by the Carnegie Corporation of New York as one of its “Great Immigrants” of 2022. 

President Biden announced his intent to appoint Hirokazu Yoshikawa as one of 15 voting members of the National Board for Education Sciences. Yoshikawa is the Courtney Sale Ross Professor of Globalization and Education at NYU Steinhardt (Applied Psychology), University Professor, and co-director of IHDSC’s Global TIES for Children Center.

Dennis Shasha, Silver Professor and professor of computer science, Courant, who co-created software systems to combat epidemics, to prevent software piracy, and to create energy-efficient blockchains, has been named a senior member by the National Academy of Inventors.

Dries Sels, assistant professor of physics, Arts and Science, won an Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Fellowship in Physics.

The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Faculty Award recognizes outstanding facultywho exemplify and promote the spirit of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s scholarship, life, and justice work in their research, teaching, leadership, and/or community-building efforts. The 2022–2023 recipients are:

  • Arlene Dávila, a professor in NYU’s Department of Anthropology and Department of Social and Cultural Analysis and founding director of the Latinx Project at NYU
  • Richard Move, an assistant arts professor in the Department of Dance at the Tisch School of the Arts
  • Dafna Naphtali, an adjunct faculty member in the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development’s Department of Music and Performing Arts Professions
  • Danielle Ofri, a clinical professor in the Department of Medicine at NYU Grossman School of Medicine
