NEVILLE SANJANA, Assistant Professor of Biology, Neuroscience, and Physiology in FAS, the New York Genome Center, and the School of Medicine, received the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers for his work developing new tools for precise gene repair using pioneering gene-editing technology CRISPR.

MICHAEL MCELROY, Associate Arts Professor of Drama at Tisch School of the Arts, received a Tony Honors for Excellence in the Theater.

Two NYU faculty members were elected to the National Academy of Sciences:

  • RUSSEL CAFLISCH, Professor of Mathematics and Director of the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences

WAFAA BILAL, Professor of Photography and Imaging at the Tisch School of the Arts, will receive an honorary doctorate from DePauw University.

PHILIP KENNEDY, Professor of Middle Eastern & Islamic Studies and Comparative Literature at NYU Abu Dhabi, won the Sheikh Zayed Book Award in the "Arab Culture in Other Languages" category for Recognition in the Arabic Narrative Tradition.

ELIZA GRISWOLD, a Distinguished Writer in Residence at the Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute, has won the 2019 Pulitzer Prize in General Nonfiction for "Amity and Prosperity: One Family and the Fracturing of America."

VIRGINIA COX, Professor of Italian at FAS, has received the William Nelson Prize from Renaissance Quarterly for her article “An Unknown Early Modern New World Epic: Girolamo Vecchietti’s Delle prodezze di Ferrante Cortese (1587–88)."

YANN LECUN, Silver Professor of Computer Science at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences, was awarded the ACM A.M. Turing Award, considered "the Nobel Prize for Computing," for his breakthroughs in artificial intelligence.

SPIKE LEE, Professor of Graduate Film at Tisch School of the Arts, won an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay for his film BlacKkKlansman. In the fall, the film also received the Cannes Film Festival's Grand Prix.

HARVEY MOLOTCH, Professor Emeritus of Social & Cultural Analysis and Sociology at FAS, has received the W.E.B. Du Bois Career of Distinguished Scholarship Award from the American Sociological Association.

MARSHA BERGER, Silver Professor of Computer Science and Mathematics at the Courant Institute, has won the American Mathematical Society and the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics' 2019 Norbert Wiener Prize in Applied Mathematics.

DONNA HALLAS, Clinical Professor at the Meyers College of Nursing, has won a 2018 Book of the Year Award from the American Journal of Nursing.

PAUL ROMER, Professor of Economics and Director of the Urbanization Project at the Stern School of Business, has been awarded the 2018 Nobel Prize in Economics.

NEIL GUTERMAN, Dean and Paulette Goddard Professor at the Silver School of Social Work, has been elected to the American Academy of Social Work and Social Welfare.

DIAMELA ELTIT, Global Distinguished Professor of Creative Writing in Spanish at FAS, has received the 2018 National Literature Prize of Chile.

JEFF CHEEGER, Silver Professor of Mathematics at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences, has been named the recipient of the 2019 Leroy P. Steele Prize for Lifetime Achievement by the American Mathematical Society.

EMMANUELLE ERTEL, Clinical Assistant Professor of French Literature, Thought, and Culture at FAS, has been named an Officer of the Order of Arts and Letters by the French Minister of Culture.

JOHN JOST, Professor of Psychology at FAS, will be receiving an honorary doctorate from the University of Buenos Aires.  

CATHARINE STIMPSON, University Professor and Professor of English at FAS and Dean Emerita of the Graduate School of Arts and Science, has been awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Ottawa.

TIANNING DIAO, Assistant Professor of Chemistry at FAS, has received a 2018 Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellowship.
