Fine hair can be difficult to manage: it is typically quick to tangle, and can be quite prone to greasiness. To help you combat yours, we’ve asked beauty gurus and hair experts for their holy grail of fine hair products and tools. Here’s how to turn a hair day from just fine to great.

ELEVEN Australian, I Want Body foam, €23

Hair stylist Conor James Doyle calls the brand’s foam a “longtime favourite”. “You pop it in wet, use a generous amount, and for max volume, blow dry the hair upside-down until dry. Then style. It’s heat activated and creates a ‘memory’ in hair that struggles to hold style,” he says.

“When it comes to fine hair, it’s all about the prep. Where most people go wrong is they rely too heavily on the ‘after’ product vs getting the hair really charged up with volume in the prep stages for styling.”

“There is a reason why the Dyson Airwrap has won endless awards. It really is the top hair tool for women, but especially for those with fine hair who crave volume. The great thing is that you can easily create salon worthy hair at home with no extreme heat, leaving your hair healthy and shiny from root to ends,” says hair stylist Dylan Bradshaw.

“Preparation is key; I would recommend you dry the hair to 80pc. Starting with damp hair is crucial to ensure your hair styling lasts. Keep a water spray close by, should you need to dampen the hair during the process.”

“When it comes to the Airwrap attachments the 30mm and 40mm barrel attachments are perfect for creating looser, bouncy curls, waves or voluminous shape,” he adds, “I suggest going curly on the root, setting each section and working through the T-bar, front and parting. Tackling this area of the head is a simple but effective way to add volume to fine hair in a matter of minutes.”

“This tool promotes positive hair health as you can use it on full heat and speed as it never heats more than 150 degrees, adjusting the heat as per your scalp sensitivity. Like with all tools, practice makes perfect. Once you find your formula, stick with it and have fun trying new styles.”

It’s all well and good to have something for wash day, but some products can help for the inbetween. “I was recently introduced to the Andrew Fitzsimons’ spray and it’s amazing,” says content creator Emma McEvoy (@emmanoodle). “Especially if you’re trying to use the Dyson Airwrap but you don’t want to wash your hair again.

“I spray it on the section of hair until it’s damp, then I Dyson it as normal and it brings back such volume. It’s as if I had washed my hair and done a blow dry from scratch. I have used it non-stop since I got it.”

Joico’s volumising shampoo, €19.90

“It is one of my favourites as it acts like a very gentle clarifying shampoo, which lifts anything on the hair that can weigh it down,” says hair stylist Sabrina Hill, who owns Kopper Hair Salon in Dublin. “A great tip that I recommend is to always lather shampoo up and leave it to sit on hair for three minutes, as I feel it gives so much more of a lift, which makes it the perfect base for a light amount of conditioner.

“Being a hairdresser with over 20 years’ experience has given me great insight into fine hair problems. However, being that hairdresser who has very fine hair herself has made me a bit of a pro when it comes to all the right products and tricks to give the best voluminous results.”

“There are so many reasons for fine hair and it’s important to recognise this so you can find the best routine for you to help boost your hair. Many people, like myself, have naturally thinner locks — however, there are many other reasons such as postpartum hair loss, deficiencies, perimenopause and menopause, which can cause an even bigger thinning issue for many women.”

Velcro rollers

Sometimes the biggest results come from the simplest tool. “One of my favourite tools to use to give long lasting volume is velcro rollers. I know it’s not very fancy — however, it honestly will make a vast difference to giving your root area all that extra long lasting volume,” Hill says.

“A little trick I like to do is mist a tiny spray of L’Oréal Elnett hair spray to each section before rolling in the velcro. It just gives the hair much better memory.”

“I would suggest something to give volume to the root but also to add grittiness, so that your hair has some hold, and will in turn set the hair. A product such as Color Wow Raise the Roots is amazing for fine, flat, colour-treated hair. It gives long-lasting lift, body and fullness,” Dylan Bradshaw says.

Like Bradshaw, Hill is a fan of the very same. “I adore using a spray type product on fine hair when it’s wet. I still haven’t fallen in love with any cream based products for thinner hair types, as I feel most can leave a residue and I find that mousses and foams can make hair sticky and more difficult to style,” she says.

“However, I love a good volume spray and Color Wow Raise the Roots is one of my favourites. It’s just a phenomenal product that delivers big results.”
