We’re lying on fluffy cushions in a darkened room. Brightly coloured plastic fish gently float up and down in ambient, colour-changing tubes, and waves of light ripple across the fibre optics descending from the ceiling.

Our five-year-old autistic son, Finn, is so chilled out, he’s taken his trousers off. But it’s OK, we’re booked into the Zen sensory room and, for the next 45 minutes, the space is ours alone; no one is going to take offence or gawp as he rubs his face on any of the many tactile surfaces in the room.
