Not many people associate Straffan in Co Kildare with rock and roll, but there was a time in the 1980s when musicians from all over the world flocked to the small town.

In 1979, Eric Clapton bought Barberstown Castle and enjoyed having his famous fellow rock stars over for music sessions when they were touring here. He sold it in 1987 to Ken Healy, who turned it into a four-star hotel with a suite named after the guitarist.

Last October, it was taken over by Sutton House Hospitality Ltd, with plans to restore the older parts of the castle even further.

The village hasn’t lost its appeal for the rich and famous, with the likes of model Pippa O’Connor, Irish soccer international Niall Quinn and TV presenter Brian Dowling all setting up home there.

In the centre of the village is The Darley. This development of two, three and four-bed houses has just launched its final phase of four three-bed mid-terrace homes.

Built by Belgrave, the scheme will only have 25 properties in total when complete. It has been named after Frederick Darley, who was the architect behind Straffan House, now known as the K-Club.

The Chestnut style home types here have a floor area of 1,150sq ft and are priced from €455,000.

The front exterior of the mid-terrace houses is finished with a mix of limestone and a low-maintenance monocouche render.

Inside, the white kitchens are contemporary in design with plenty of storage. The living room is at the front of the house, with the kitchen/dining room at the back and a utility to the side.

Upstairs are three bedrooms (master en suite) and a family bathroom. Bedrooms are fitted with wardrobes, as per showhouse, and bathrooms and wet areas are tiled.

All homes are A-rated with high-performance windows and doors and come with an air-to-water heat pump with thermostatically controlled radiators throughout.

For families considering a move to the area there are plenty of schools close by like Scoil Bhríde National School and North Kildare Educate Together in Celbridge. Secondary schools include Newbridge College and St Wolstan’s Community School in Celbridge.

There is a bus service that goes from Straffan to Wellington Quay in the city. Alternatively, Hazelhatch and Celbridge train station is about 10 minutes away by car.

The showhouse is on view by appointment only through joint agents Coonan New Homes (01) 6286128 and French Estates (01) 6242320.
