Tom Staunton: What we can learn from the way they do things in Scotland

The Highland system of crossing hill ewes with lowland breed to be sold to lowland farms could work here – but we need to take note of the problems caused by forestry over there.

I went across to Scotland to the Lanark-type Blackface sheep sales in Lanark and Dalmally for a few days.

Breeding season is in full swing here, with rams out with all the ewes. The rams are raddled and we check them regularly to make sure they are healthy and working properly.

If a ram gets sick or lame and has a high temperature for a period of time, he can become infertile. So be vigilant and treat them where necessary.
