John Fagan: Forage crops are well worth the investment – I’m finishing lambs with no meal

Growing brassicas like tyfon, redstart or forage rape has many advantages

Having a forage crop like redstart at the end of the year is a massive help when it comes to finishing lambs. The good is gone out of the grass at this time of year and normally in November I would have to feed meal to get the lambs over the line.

Having redstart means I don’t need meal. It also serves to rotate the reseeding on the farm, and it is a labour-friendly and cheap way to finish and winter sheep.
