Factory quotes for lamb unchanged as kill numbers down

IFA sheep chair Kevin Comiskey reports lamb prices as “strengthening a bit” with springs selling from €6.35-6.65/kg on weights up to 22.5kgs while culls remain static at €2.70-3.10/kg. Photo Brian Farrell

This week last year I was reporting on the prospects for “a slow but steady rise” in factory prices ahead of the run up to Christmas. Twelve months ago, there was uncertainty over the numbers in the system, with factories encouraging farmers to feed more meals to get their stock to more marketable weights.

Twelve months on and little has changed — all be it, current factory quotes for lamb are 20-30c/kg stronger than this time last year. Against that improvement, however, has to be put the reality that quotes for cull ewes are 40-50c/kg less.
