All about numbers as reduced sheep kill keeps prices flying high

The plight of the Irish beef finisher compared to his sheep farmer neighbour encapsulates how the market is driven by the numbers.

Beef factory base quotes were back another 5c/kg over the weekend — down 15c/kg in three weeks, and 10-15c/kg below where they were 12 months ago. The reason? This year’s overall cattle kill, at 578,542, is running 6pc above where it was this time last year.
