Excellent affordable resort with an awesome staff!

Reviewed Mar 8, 2022
This review is for the resort side of Las Rocas Resort and Dive Shop; we didn’t use the diving operation.

We stayed at Las Rocas for eight days in early 2022. Pasquale, the owner, was very easy to work with in making reservations, and it took some work because they were booked pretty full. He was able to accommodate my wife and I by moving us to a different room twice during our stay, which was a very minor inconvenience, not a big deal.

First off, Las Rocas is just what they claim to be: not a luxury resort, not all-inclusive. If you want luxury and pampering, don’t stay there. It’s a well-run, affordable, quiet and peaceful resort. If you do stay there, expect a marvelous staff, all of whom are kind, friendly and welcoming. I can’t imagine a better-staffed operation. Elio in the bar/restaurant, and the older gent, and the ladies who might wait on you are all wonderful! Las Rocas will send a car to pick you up at the airport and bring you there when you’re flying out. Nice little touch.

The kitchen staff is awesome! I was shocked that every single type of dish they prepared was pretty much flawless. Seafood dishes of all types, burgers, breakfast burritos, tacos, appetizers—what a great operation! The food was consistently excellent.

The bungalows are basically little cabins. Beds are fine, the showers work well, the A/C and ceiling fans will keep your room cool and comfy. You should be perfectly comfortable day or night. There is the occasional outlet that might not work perfectly, and a tile or two missing from a shower, but these are small things that I mentioned to the reception desk when we left. But it wasn’t a big deal. Each cabin has a hammock and we spent lots of time laying in the hammocks and reading. Each one also has a lounge chair, and there might be cushions you can use with it to make it more comfy. When it’s raining out, that’s a great way to spend the day, and there’s not a whole lot of other options besides eating or drinking when the weather isn’t cooperating. Be prepared to put little to no toilet tissue in the toilets, and they provide a basket for that which is emptied daily. Island plumbing is delicate so you need to be respectful of that.

The grounds are lovely, cool and tropical, with macaws and doves flying about and making their sounds. It all reminds you that you’re in the tropics. Cool in the shade, warm in the sun, and there are several lounge chairs on their small beach to relax in as well. You can rent a kayak very cheaply and they’ll bring it right to the beach for you.

If you’re looking for simple but comfy accommodations and a superb staff, you can’t go wrong with Las Rocas!

The location was excellent! Nice and quiet to be able to sleep, but within walking distance of many restaurants on the beach. We had a great time and really enjoyed the diving. Otto and Geraldine were truly top notch. I would not hesitate to stay here again. Otto filleted our lion fish for us and the restaurant on site fried it for us. It was a great time.

We stayed for 8 nights in February. The resort was perfect for us. There are only 18 rooms so you get to know some of the other guests, particularly if you dive with them, and you get to know the staff.

And it's great staff. Devon and Winson and Elio in the restaurant are great. Paco was an outstanding dive master. Otto the captain was really helpful. Stephanie in the dive shop kept everything organized. The office staff were very helpful setting up some island tours and our Covid test for our return flight.

Airport transfers were included and on time and easy.

The food is quite good! Loved the pastas in particular. Full breakfast included. Happy Hour was 3-6 with drinks half price.

What I loved the most is the resort is by itself - no crowds, shade, beautiful view. But West Bay was a 5 minute walk if you want all that action.

For tours, we enjoyed Roatan Brewing Company. Good food and good beers. The iguana sanctuary was a hoot - you feed them and they come running. Mayan Jungle sloth sanctuary was really good.

Greatly enjoyed the diving - decent visibility for our trip - 40 feet instead of the 100' typical due to the rain before our visit, but still great. Highly recommend the dive shop and Paco.

We plan to return!

Room tip: The Superior cabins have the best views

We loved our stay as Las Rocas - we have stayed at several different places on Roatan, and we love the West Bay / West End part of the island. We wanted something close to the water, clean, reasonable priced, close to West Bay if possible - and Las Rocas fit all the requirements - Keep in mind the rooms are small and basic, linens are clean but worn - but you can't beat the location or the surroundings. Cute cabins, some with ocean views, sitting in it's own tropical forest, lots of hibiscus . . . also the restaurant serves delicious food and a complete breakfast is included each morning. Be sure to try the fish tacos - my favorite!! We don't dive, but their dive shop had snorkel gear for rent, and let us go out on the dive boat to snorkel nearby the divers, included our gear for $25. Best snorkeling ever! They have a small beach area of their own that is swimmable, or our favorite was to walk 3 minutes toward West Bay beach and swim there without seaweed. Yes, we loved sitting right on the water and eating our breakfast, lunch and dinner - very hard to find another place like this! Highly recommend.

Room tip: Opt for an ocean view room! Snorkel or dive for sure!

This review is for the Dive Center and the restaurant. We have been to the restaurant multiple times and just love the entire crew! The food is always good and the vibe is so relaxing and pleasant. Winston, Devon, and Elis are lovely and make every visit a lot more fun. And of course the requisite furry friends that we just love to lounge with. The view can’t be beat. Don’t miss Happy Hour or the Lobster Burrito, and the Fried Shrimp/Fries are awesome!
As far as the Dive Center…communication wasn’t great to begin with, but after a few messages back and forth we were set up perfectly and my husband and SIL took the Intro to Diving class. Dive master Paco took great care to make sure they were properly prepared, safe and had a wonderful experience. It was so exciting for them, and also a photographer accompanied them and took marvelous photos!!!! And you have to meet boat captain Otto, his smile will light up your entire experience. Altogether a great crew!

My daughter (12 yrs) and I spent a week diving with Las Rocas. Great location on West Bay, 10 minutes walk from Infinity Bay where we were staying, and really great people. Mirta was very kind and helpful and went out of her way to ensure that my daughter was comfortable and happy as a brand new certified diver. Paco, Jeff and Geraldine were a pleasure to dive with and again, very encouraging and kind to my daughter. All of the sites were interesting and beautiful. Small groups, great captain, very professional and very personable. They managed to accommodate a range different diver experience levels. Also a great photographer joining many of the dives. Thanks for a really great experience.
