Review of Melia Las Dunas

My own personal experience was wonderful, travelling solo this time. Overall, one's experience is based on mindset, what resort one chooses and when one stays. Can be a hit or a miss. For myself, it was a hit!! The tour guide on the bus from the airport was informative and humorous. Arrived a couple of hours before the 4pm check-in time. Check-in was simple and there were drinks available while waiting. Consequently my room wasn't ready yet but I was able to leave my bag with an attendant at no charge. I had no issues with any of the amenities, staff or guests. Service was prompt and always with a friendly approach. They appreciated any tips they were given. The Cuban banks do not except CDN or US coin, so if choosing to tip, please bring bills of either currency. I was approached by staff who politely asked if I could change their CDN loonies and twoonies into bills which I was able to oblige. My room was comfortable and properly taken care of daily - no issues with A/C, hot water, toilet paper, towels, bottled water, linens. My room was located in one of the buildings(#19) on the perimeter of the resort away from the main entertainment hub which would be quieter for anyone wanting to go to bed early. The grounds were groomed and the facilities were, for the most part, clean. Remembering to always carry a bit ot toilet tissue in case the public washrooms areas on the resort had run out. The daytime activity staff and evening entertainment and performers were fantastic. The beach environment was beautiful. On windy days, the waves were strong but being from Atlantic Canada, I was used to it. Loved jumping in the waves and floating about when the water was calm. I had no problem getting a beach lounge chair or change of beach towel if needed most times during the day. However, unless they had many more chairs stored away, there would definitely not be near enough chairs if the resort was at full occupancy. Although, they may have not always had ALL my food preferences, there were certainly enough good choices at every meal, at the buffet - fish, pork, beef, pasta, rice, eggs, sweets and more. Chicken and bread minimal. The International and Columbus a la Carte restaurants were very good. The resort uses mostly QR codes for all on-site resort information. Need a 220V adaptor for charging. Used spin equipment at the gym. Some treadmills and stair climbers weren't working. Weight room was fine. No mosquitos! Great trip! Would return!!

The food is horrendous.They didn't have any main course options, the food had no flavor, they just added salt. The melted ice cream only had the main dish 2-month-old pork and that's what they gave of meat.

It was a terrible hotel, but the service was okay, the beaches were gorgeous, and the food facilities and entertainment all shared the same quality (none). Food could have been better cooked, presented better, and had more options. Facilities need deep maintenance and cleaning(the pool needs complete rehab). Entertainment does not even exist. The hotel is promoted as a 5-star hotel; honestly, it's not even a 1-star hotel.

This is our third visit to Melia. Love it. Every time great experience. Great hotel overall. We always had excellent service at the reception upon arrival. Quick transfer to our rooms. Rooms are well looked after, clean and spacious. Special thanks to our cleaning lady Madeily. She did a fantastic job.
Good food at the buffet. Attentive and always helpful staff. Special thanks to Emanuel and Yeni at the restaurant. Great a la carte restaurants. Columbus restaurant and Pizzeria A+++
24 hours Snack bar is a life saver. Grill Place by the beach is very good. The main Bar at the lobby is stunning pace. Beach bars always have nice drinks and cold beer. Special thanks to Lazara and Raul there. They are extremely professional and friendly people.
Beautiful landscaping all over the place. Gardeners Hector an Frank became our good friends.
Entertainment team does a great job all day long. Our kids enjoyed Kids Club and their entertainers. Ellie and Cintia are great with children.
We spent most of our time at the beach and the beach is fantastic there. Guys from boat house Jorge and Dennis thank you so much for great experience. We really enjoyed fishing and snorkeling with you. And of course hotel manager Lisevey is always beyond expectations, always there to help. Thank you so much.
Will be back for sure!

- luke warm
- We requested 3 couples near each other and not on ground floor, they initially put us on the ground floor
- 1 fantastic guy at reception so welcoming and personable I wish I got his name

Beach
- very nice, crystal clear water
- Not enough shade
- Not enough chairs, some very old
- bathroom is a ten minute walk

Pool
- first few days only 20 lounge chairs
- Brought in lots of new plastic loungers

Service
- hit and miss
- Watch for workers trying to get a $20 bill and giving you less coins

Rooms
- old needs updating, not like in photos
- You need a step ladder to get in and out of the tub. Not recommended for elderly

Food
- for Cuba, food is good
- Pork only at buffet but plenty of everything except no butter, jam or honey for toast
- Lots of fresh fruit
- Many places to eat
- buffet restaurant very big and clean
- Italian restaurant only had Pizza but crust was excellent
- smoothie bar
- international restaurant, pretty decent food
- 24 snack bar always had fries

I have had a horrible experience. No one should go through what we went through during our stay. First of all, we booked a room for two adults and two children 11 and 14 year old. They sold us a loveseat as a sleeping spot for 11 year old. Dear Melia people, did you see an 11 year old? How are they supposed to fit in there? Customer service were not helpful and kept telling us that they only put a double bed because of their policy. It was not acceptable to us. In the end, we just talked to a janitor and he put two separate single beds disregarding the hotel's policy.
Second, food. Omg. I understand shortages, what I don't understand how you can "butcher" fresh produce while cooking. We did not see fresh seafood, period. Tasteless bland dishes day after day. I stopped eating on day 4 because I could not handle the smell and the quality. Third, customer service. Inflexible, not putting their best foot forward, seemed uninterested in helping out I was humiliated when I tried to find feminine hygiene products when I suddenly needed them. They didn't have anything on the resort! I was told to hire a cab or rent a car and drive 1 hr and 30 mins to the nearest city. I couldn't believe it.
Honestly, I think Melia Group should take responsibility for managing this resort. And judging by other tourists' opinions, our experience was consistent with other people experience at Cayo Maria. I hope my review will be helpful.

We are extremely concerned to learn of your disappointing experience during your stay and would like to apologize for any inconveniences that you may have experienced. We have two kinds of bedding configuration, King Size Bed (only one bed) or Twin (2 beds together), in any of those cases the space that those two configurations take it is the same, furthermore if you put one extra bed, could be only one more, for space reasons. In Premium rooms the bedding configuration is only king plus an extra bed.We sorry so much to see that it was impossible to fulfill your expectations with our food and service offer. You can be sure that we will take into consideration your comments to reorient our efforts in order to improve our service and the satisfaction we provide to our guests.
