Melia Las Dunas has received compliments for its attentive staff and the vibrant atmosphere that keeps guests entertained amidst beautiful surroundings. The hotel's rooms are often described as spacious and the variety of dining options are a hit, though there have been mentions of cleanliness issues and the occasional pest. While the resort's amenities generally add to the positive experience, some guests have called out problems with hot water and maintenance. Moreover, a number of travelers feel that the value for money could be improved, referencing subpar conditions and a lack of expected amenities.

My wife and I spent two weeks at Meliá Las Dunas from Feb 19 to March 4th. We enjoyed our time there very much and would definitely come back to this resort. Yes, the resort is dated and could use some upgrades for sure, and I believe they are doing so to some degree. They recently have redone the adult pool area which was a very nice area and very well done. We walked through the family side and that pool area really needs to be done as well, hopefully that will happen soon. The rooms and buffet could really use a facelift, quite a bit of paint chipping etc. Also, the buffet area could be cleaned better on a regular basis , walls , window ledges etc were quite dirty. This is something that can be and should be rectified quite easily . They also did not have hand sanitizer like other resorts we’ve been to, and was a bit concerned with the cooks accepting tips from people while they are handling food. The food was good considering the challenges they face and was never a shortage of food. Yes, the food is a bit bland as they don’t have access to all the spices etc I am use to, however with that said I believe I ate a lot healthier for these two weeks without all the added salts , msg etc that I’m use to at home. The beach was absolutely beautiful!! A very long stretch of beautiful white sand and clear blue water. I’m sure the nicest beach I will ever swim in in my life. We loved every minute and spent most of every day at the beach. Three entrances to the beach with a beach bar at each entrance. The grounds of this resort were full of beautiful trees, plants and flowers and were maintained beautifully, I can’t say enough about how gorgeous the grounds were.

Now for the best part, the people!!! The staff at this resort truly made our vacation. The guys keeping up the grounds worked so hard and were always so friendly, sniping flowers for my wife and cutting coconuts for us to drink, and always smiling. The bars and restaurant staff were always friendly and worked extremely hard. The dancers in the theatre were amazing, we watched a few shows and were blown away at how talented they were, they were also very friendly as well. Ricardo, the entertainment guy at the beach and in the lobby area on Cuban day was awesome. He always made an effort to come and talk with us , encouraging us to dance etc. He had some serious energy day in and day out, it was very impressive to watch him work and get people involved.

All in all we loved this resort and the people working there. My negative comments were only very minor issues for as as the positives by far outweighed any negatives. I’m sure we will be back to this resort and hope see many of the beautiful people we met there this year.

We traveled to Melia Las Dunas In May 2019. We were 6 people. Me my wife and my 2 teenage kids and a friend each. We had 3 rooms all together. Lets start with the Great. The Beach. White sand, crystal blue water, probably the nicest beach I have ever seen in the Caribbean. Lots of palapas but if you want one close to the entertainment and beach bars you need to get there early. I would go myself around 7:30 and tip the guy at the beach and he would watch our towels till we got back from breakfast. The grounds were always kept clean and well trimmed. Rooms were a little dated, but always kept clean. Our AC worked, we never ran out of hot water in all 3 of our rooms. The waitresses at the lobby bar are fantastic and friendly. Use them instead of standing at the bar. It was alot quicker to get your drinks.
The Good. 2/3 ala carts were good. The Asian and the Gourmet were good, but the pizza place was not at all. We are Italian so we might be a little bias on the pizza but lets just say I would have rather eaten a slice of pizza from 7/11. The snack bar was good and always hit the spot.
The OK. The buffet was OK. You always found something to eat but very repetitive. The pool was ok, but keep in mind we didnt stay much at the pool as the beach was too beautiful.
Over all:
I found the total experience well worth what we paid. I have recommended this resort to other people. I would return to this resort, but I have never returned to any resort I have visited, only because I always want to try something new.

My husband and I spent our honeymoon here at the end of February 2020. Our first few days, we had a fairly pleasant experience but towards the end of our 7 days, it started to go downhill. For the many cons, I wouldn't recommend this resort to anyone but there were some highlights that made it still a memorable and relaxing vacation.

Pros: The servers at the buffet and staff at the lobby bar were excellent, friendly and attentive (I will note, we tipped almost every interaction). The beach was beautiful and clean. The pool area always had lots of loungers available and was also lovely and clean. The flowers and gardens around the resort were well maintained by the staff who were all friendly. It made for really nice scenery. The entertainment was great, we enjoyed the dancers and the rock band.

Cons: Our room bathroom and the bathrooms around the resort were dirty even after our cleaner was in for the day, the plumbing system is terrible (I know, it's Cuba and not much can be done but there was so much clogging and smelly). The bathroom stalls by the pool have no locks on them so you'd have to put your foot against the door to keep it closed. Really hard to get back into a wet swimsuit when you have to use one hand to keep the door closed. We were only given fresh towels once in our room even when we put them in the tub to show they were dirty and needed replacing, the cleaner simply hung them back up and they were musty. I could tell because there was mascara on them. We had no hot water for our last two days. Our room lock was always sticky, very difficult to get in and we had to get several card replacements, maintenance came but couldn't fix it and they weren't able to put us in another room.My husband literally had to body slam the door to get it open every time. There were cockroaches at the buffet and in our room. The a la carts were terrible, some of the food we couldn't even eat and my husband and I both got sick from them. We only went to two and opted not to bother going to the third. The buffet had very limited selection. There was no music at the pool and anywhere there was music, it would cut out or go to static so much it wasn't even worth having it on.

Dear Guest: First of all, thanks a lot for choosing us to spend your vacations and sharing your opinion on Tripadvisor. We are very happy to know you liked our amazing beach, pool area, gardens and entertaiment shows. Although we apologize and for not having completely fulfilled your expectations in this occasion. Our intention is always to improve our service, that’s why your comments help us in this objective. However we are really surprised about your comments of our a la cart restaurants, because it is one of the best points that our costumers remark on their opinions, prove of this it is the dozens of review that you can check on this same page, anyway we respect your comments and we will keep working hard into the improvement of all our services and facilities. With regards to your report of illness, let me point out you that we, as hoteliers, follow the sanitary regulations according to the Health Ministry of Cuba, and our hotel is subject of frequent health and safety inspections held by the group of inspectors of the Cuban Health Ministry. Also Meliá Hotels Internationals is a company well known all over the world with regards to solid procedures and standards for food manufacturing and cleaning processes in all of our hotels and I guarantee you that our Meliá Las Dunas Hotel is not the exception. We do follow and respect all the necessary procedures to guarantee the health and safety all our guests. Concerning to the music at the pool, we would like to clarify that our hotel has 2 pools areas, one for activities with music and the other area is for relax with passive activities such as taichi, yoga and pilates. It will be a pleasure to have you back in Melia Las Dunas if you decide to give us another chance! Thank you for your contribution. Juan Carmelo Álamo General Manager

First day of our week long holiday was not good. Book thru Expedia(Sunwing Vacation). We arrived/checked-in at around 7:00pm.We were disappointed with the washroom in our room. Toilet bowl had a blood stained. Called the reception 2X for housekeeping. No one came. Had to go personally to the Front desk and I was told by the Staff(Supervisor) he will send someone to clean the toilet. We went for dinner and walk around the facilities. Around 11:30pm we went back to our room expecting that my concern was address... And guess what? NO one clean the blood stains. I have to clean it up my self as my children needs to use the toilet. Staff was not friendly (overworked I guess). Buffet was so-so. Not much selections. D0 not expect a 4 stars service at the buffet/bars. They wont acknowledge your presence if you are not a "tipper". However, if you give tip, staffs will remember your face. Be aware of the cutleries and water glasses as when the guests done with the table, unused cutleries and water glasses are never change when they reset the tables. Waiters just removed the used once. Always ask for bottled water. Most of the time water served are smells chlorine (tap water). Mediterennean Ala carte is ok. Pool towel is limited. If you miss their exchange window (2:pm to 4:pm) you'll not gonna get any. Twice that I went at 2:30pm and they dont have available clean towels anymore. I gave tip to the cleaning staff to change my towel before and presto! I have mine replenished before 2pm. If you have some mobility issues, this resort is not for you. They accept Canadian $$$. Do not bother to bring USD.

Just returned February 27 2020 from another great week at Melia Las Dunas in Cayo Santa Maria, Cuba , it was our 3rd time there and we were treated as VIP's again . The resort is well laid out and is located on one of the best beaches in the Caribbean. Our room was very clean and spacious . The beach has many shade huts and is very clean , no seaweed like many other beaches in the Caribbean .
The lobby at this resort is one of the largest and most comfortable lobby's of any resort we have visited . bar service is quick with may top shelf products . Entertainment in the lobby every evening , saxophone , piano and singers every night ,
Food service at the buffet is very good with lots of variety and good quality . Without exception all the staff is very friendly and works very hard .
This resort offers great value for money and I highly recommend it

We stayed from Jan 27- Feb 10 (2 weeks). We were a group of 12 so 6 rooms in total We arrived after dark and the first impression of the rooms were not good. We were moved the next morning. Our new room was in a great location (72 building close to adult pool and lobby) The only downfall is the cleanliness of the resort in general. The rooms were not cleaned properly, the tables and chairs around the resort were dirty, the toilets were not cleaned properly. The cleaning staff needs some training. The rooms and resort are getting tired too and needs to be renovated and updated. One of our group had a cochroche in the room.
The rest is all good. The service staff were amazing, especially Junior Crespo at the Mojito bar and Raoul serving on the beach. All the staff were always making sure you were good, they were all so friendly and courteous. This makes us want to return if they train their their cleaning staff.
The Beach....WOW!!! This is second to none! The sand is like flour and the water is crystal clear. Its shallow too.
The beds were very comfy, great mattresses!
I wouldn't recommend the AL a cartes except for the oriental. The buffet was the best and plenty of food.
The pool was nice and again, very good service at the swim up bar and snack bar.
The resort is huge and mature. beautiful trees, foliage, flowers and well groomed. If they would clean properly and do some updates, we would go back in a heartbeat! Don't let the 1.5 hour bus ride discourage you. Its interesting

Wow where do I start. This resort is very dated and needs some improvements. We were travelling with a bunch of people for their wedding that was suppose to happen at the resort. Check in was fine however they wouldn’t give us a choice for the restaurants we wanted to eat at. Everyone’s room was available but mine. The room was outdated and the shower curtain was dirty, there was no hot water, I’d say warm at the very most. The water in the sink took for ever to drain. The towels were not white let’s just say that. They were stained very badly and I was afraid to use it as it looked so dirty. The bed skirt on the bed had stains on it and the mini fridge in the room had a sign saying it was stocked daily with beer, soft drinks and water, however the only thing they left was 1 bottle of water for 2 people. When we asked about the mini fridge being stocked they said they don’t do that any longer. When we mentioned the hot water situation they said it’s best to use it in the early morning. The food was mediocre at best and this was my 5th time to Cuba and love it there and have never had issues with the food before as I know what to expect but the food on this resort wasn’t the best. The best thing about this resort was the beach! It’s beautiful and that’s where we spent most of our time. The bridge to be coordinated with the wedding planner from the resort before arrival and planned on getting married at the gazebo. But when we arrived she talked them into having it on the beach cause the gazebo wasn’t ready to be used and she didn’t recommend using it even though they had planned on using it previously. It needed a good paint job and updating as well. It was only when we complained to the manager at the resort did they actually send people to paint it. We booked with Sunwing and I am pretty sure they haven’t sent a representative there to do an inspection in quite some time as the pictures in Sunwings website did NOT represent the actual resort and those pictures must have been taken quite some time ago. The bride and groom had to change their rooms cause of the hot water situation and we looked at changing our room but the room they wanted to change us to was no better then the one we were in. I can honestly say I’m very disappointed with the resort and Sunwing when it comes to this resort. We had to cut our trip short due to the Coronavirus and in order for Sunwing not to charge us 500 Cuba Pesos to come back to Canada early they made us sign a waiver not to seek compensation for the unused portion of our trip which we had no other choice but sign it or pay up which meant we would be our more money and no guarantee we would get anything for our unused portion.

The resort has beautiful grounds and all the staff were so friendly!

The buffet always had something to eat for picky children, cartoon shaped pancakes in the morning, pizza for lunch and made to order pasta for dinner, Suyen was a great server and kept us coming back to her. The Mediterranean restaurant was the best a la carte, lobster was delicious!

The kids club and mini disco were always a hit for the kiddos, thank you to Leidy for being great with them!

Junior at the lobby bar was my husband’s favourite, made sure our drinks were always refreshed.

I have no complaints about this resort, could use an update(our bathroom was a bit gross and boardwalk to the beach needs to be redone) but only because it’s well loved. For the price we paid, Melia exceeded our expectations. Thank you for the great family vacation!

Avoid this hotel: the facilities are old and decadent, the furnitures inside the rooms are broken and dirty (see pictures below), the walls are full of stains or mould and the rooms were far away from being clean. On our check-in bed sheets, pillow cases and towels were full of stains, some blood stains, some mould stains. We called the reception for having them changed, they answered really rude and never sent someone to change them. We had to go looking for an housekeeper ourself and let her change them, but even the new ones had stains, they told us it’s normal. The floor and bath tube were full of hairs, they tell you the minibar is for free but it was empty. The food and the drinks are awful, cheap alcohol, cheap food and bad cooked. They write a long list of food and cocktails on their menus but they don’t have most of it, leaving you with a really poor choice. The water they serve as “mineral water” tastes of chlorine, it’s obviously tap water. Most of the stuff is super rude and unfriendly, they treat you like they wish you wouldn’t be there and make you feel the whole time uncomfortable. You better spend some more money and get a better hotel or you won’t enjoy your holiday at all.

I have been to MLD at least 2 times a year, since 2010. I return for the people, who take care of us, the beach (serene and tranquil) the food ( I never go hungry). I can't wait to return home to cuba. From the first moment we land, we are greeted by so many familiar smiling faces and many hugs. Sandra and Neysi, have been very accommodating for my Dad and myself. We check in quickly, as when they see us so often they come and settle our accommodation, bags and ask if we have any needs. They book us 3 restaurants ahead of time, which is a great help. We are always invited to the special dinner for VIP guest, which has a tremendous atmosphere and dinner. Our bags are taken to our hotel room, by the bell boys, or should I say "men" (Yuneil and Henry). The are always happy to see us, and ask about our home, work and family. They carry my very heavy bags to the upper level, open the room, and make sure that the air-conditioning is working, fridge is fully stocked (water, pop and beers), and tell us to contact the front desk if there is anything else that is needed. As I am a returning customer, I usually find a bottle of Havana Rum in my room...very nice added touch.
