Good out-ways the bad

Reviewed Feb 11, 2023
Mixed feelings about this hotel which clearly has some issues but we feel the good out-wayed the bad and we would stay again. We had bed and breakfast for 10
Nights with a pool view room
GOOD - fab location hard to beat, excellent pool and beach, amazing local Restaurants, fun easy bus services, no issues with towels as previous reviews state. Really good and cheap daily happy hour with live music most nights at the beach bar. Good room, comfy bed, room facilities all working, we paid for pool view which was excellent, on the first floor and room service daily, albeit late in the day at times and one day missed. Breakfast was good and plentiful some variation daily but lovely bacon and sausages and eggs cooked to order. Grounds well maintained.

BAD - hotel is tired and needs tlc all round and more attention to cleaning, E.g pool a bit green in areas, canopies need scrubbing, sun beds on beach knackered and uncomfortable, sun brollies need replacing. Barbados in general has a poor water system with low pressure and needs updating, we had a water problem for 16 hours where we had no water at all which was a issue, but only then and no other time. On arrival at 5pm room was not ready, a reoccurring problem when speaking to other guests, we waited another 1.5hr. Wi-Fi is terrible and intermittent, another on going problem.
Early closing bar, staff not overly friendly and noticeably appear to favour long staying and returning customers who tip them well. Get up early to bag your sun bed round the pool or you won’t get one! Swim up bar only opens for a couple of hours over lunchtime and lacks atmosphere, needs music and a happy hour here, not just at the beach bar which is 4-6

We stayed at this hotel a few times over the past 12 years and were quite satisfied with our stay there. Our recent visit was Jan 29th 2023 to February 9th 2023. The room we had was very spacious. There was no cover sheet/blanket on the bed and we could not find the control for the air conditioning. We asked for it but no one seemed to know where it was. That first night we were very cold and sleeping was very uncomfortable. We requested a blanket a few time but did not get one for a couple of days. After 2 nights of cold and no blankets and sleeping with sweaters, maintenance was sent to the room to check out the A C and found that in order to control it we had to use a chair to adjust the temp on the unit itself which was in the ceiling. The hotel had not installed/updated the control panel on the wall for easy access. Quite often we would come back to the room after a day out, and find the room had not been touched/cleaned. We spoke to the front desk a few times about this, even asking the cleaning stall on the floor at the time, to please clean the room. There was always an excuse. The water pressure and hot water in the evenings was always very low to the point where one evening there was no water at all. The guests were in the lobby complaining. Apparently the system was old and broken and needed replacing. There was no running water for 24 hours and even after restoration, the pressure was still very low and spotty. In summary, we have always liked this hotel because of its location etc. but this visit was very unpleasant, uncomfortable and frustrating. The hotel is older and appears to be somewhat neglected. Too bad!

Room tip: Beach loungers are ratty and in bad shape...requires new material. Pool loungers need a thorough cleaning. The pool needs some attention.

This hotel has major water issues and the higher the floor you’re on, the less water pressure you have. I had a “deluxe ocean view suite” and the most water pressure I had come out of the taps, or shower, was a dribble. I was caught in the shower lathered up when the water decided to stop running. The water temperature isn’t regulated. The toilet wouldn’t flush on more occasions than it did. If the toilet did flush, don’t expect to wash your hands or shower. If you turned a tap on, it would explode water out at you then go back to a dribble or nothing at all. Don’t bother booking a room with a jacuzzi. They fail to tell you none of them are usable. My suite stunk of urine and feces because of the inability to flush regularly for 10 nights due to no water in the toilet tank and no water pressure. Could rarely shower or brush my teeth. The staff are clearly aware of the water problem and are disinterested when you complain and then they lie to you. Maintenance tried to tell me the chain on the toilet was broken. What a joke.

After I made another water complaint, I met with the general manager, the manager, and head of maintenance in a room behind reception. The head of maintenance came up to my room and witnessed the water issues; I got the “we will look into it” response with no result.

The latch to secure the suite door from the inside was misaligned. When maintenance came up to fix it, it just broke right off the next day. I felt anxious and uncomfortable that I couldn’t secure my door which also didn’t have a peephole. I brought the broken piece to the front desk who wasn’t interested and refused to take the broken latch. I brought it down again the day after and was told they would take care of it and no one fixed it.

Reception doesn’t always answer the phones and it will ring and go to busy tone. The phone in my room had the message light flashing yet when I pressed the button to listen to the message, it said I needed a code. I entered my room as a guess, and it was invalid. I called front desk who told me to enter 6000. I tried that and it was still invalid. I tried to call front desk back 3 times and got no answer so I gave up.

There was rust in some places in the room. The bed was uncomfortable and pillows flat and clearly overused. The double sinks/his and her bathroom had no plugs. House keeping won’t come around until late afternoon on higher floors and they sit on the chairs meant for guests in the landing chatting and folding towels. I left $5 US the second day and a small note near a pile of towels asking for new ones. A lot of the “clean ones” are stained. They took the money but didn’t replace all the towels and they didn’t replace the empty toilet paper on subsequent days. I had to take them off a cart as I walked by. I started just leaving the do not disturb sign on my door because there was barely any service and certainly no quality service.

As I was making my way down in the elevator one day, a couple ladies in it were saying to me they had 2 towels in their room with 4 people staying in it. There is just zero attention to detail. And don’t expect your room to be ready at check in time (3pm).. my friend’s room wasn’t ready until 6pm. On an evening I was in the lobby making my usual water complaint, there were two groups of people in dispute with reception over their rooms not being ready for check in. Slow service and poor service is what this hotel is. It’s beyond Bajans working on Caribbean time.

The worst came near the end of my stay where the entire hotel didn’t have water for over 12 hours and on the higher floors (mine), no water for 16 hours. Several guests were complaining and we were all told different stories; low water pressure, tanks overheated so they had to shut them off, something wrong at the water plant station, something wrong with pipes. And because this occurred over the weekend, not a single manager attended to the hotel to deal with the chaos or show any leadership. Front desk told me the manager would be in the next day but when I went down the next day, I was told they weren’t working.

Went for a late night swim in the pool and there was a large rat running around. The food in the restaurant is very poor quality and overpriced.

There are plenty of hotels to choose from in Barbados. I’d avoid this one. If you search water pressure on trip advisor, you’ll see these problems go back to April 2022. I’ve made a claim with Air Canada vacations and I hope to get fair and reasonable compensation. Aka base garden room rate and not deluxe ocean view with no water rate that I paid thousands more for.

The location is very good overlooking a truly lovely beach. The boardwalk starts at the end of the beach and features some relaxed good eateries. Opposite the hotel is a small shopping centre so easy to pick up consumables such as beer, soft drinks etc.
The main road allows easy access to Bridgetown one way and St Lawrence Gap the other way. The bus and Z-bus service is easy and at $3.50 a ride cheaper than taxi or hiring a car and definitely more fun!
The hotel like all Barbados hotels is a bit tired and in need of redecoration post pandemic but it is clean and well laid out. Anyway you should be on the beach so it doesn't matter!
Reception is often overwhelmed so queues are inevitable.
Bar staff are slow and grumpy
Breakfast is standard fare and staff also tad on grumpy side.
Sun loungers for the beach are plentiful and the beach boys who put them out and adjust umbrellas could not have been more cheerful & helpful.
Beach bar happy hour 4-6pm so you can watch the sun go down whilst having a drink however service is slow. No bar prices displayed so you have to ask or trust. Rum punch excellent.
Rooms - good size bed, decent balcony and large bathroom. However .... no room safe, pitiful water supply and a jacuzzi that did not work. On the last day NO water at all.
Room cleaning staff were cheerful and helpful. Plenty of towels and replace without asking.
Plenty of good local eateries so NO NEED to go all inclusive (you would be disappointed in any case)
Needs re-decoration, new plumbing system, some customer care skills training and a new manager then all will be well.
The short term cruise liner passenger usage makes it all feel quite transitory.

Booked a stay overnight after a cruise. Do not stay here. Safe didn’t work. Had no water in shower and the control hanging off wall. Extremely poor room and bathroom in need of renovation!!! Would recommend staying here even overnight.
