Just returned from a one night stay in a Gansevoort Suite, for which we paid more than $1600 when fees and taxes were added to our room rate. Every single staff member we encountered was polite, friendly, courteous and competent. A lovely welcome gift of bottled water and fruit tarts was delivered just after arrival.
The room was spacious for a junior suite, but it was showing wear with scratched floors, nicked furniture and faucets with the trendy black finishes flaking off. The pillows were made of foam, the barn-style bathroom door did not fully open, and the air conditioning fan was loud. There were "amenities" throughout our room with price tags on them (boxed water $8, face mask $20, ...) Tacky!
The guest elevators stopped working during our visit so we had to use the service elevator or walk 12 floors of stairs to access our room several times. The noise from the rooftop bar could be heard in our room on Saturday evening, but it did not last late into the night.
The biggest challenge with the hotel, however, is that "memberships" are being sold to non-hotel guest to use the gym, restaurants, and private spaces. This adds significantly to the high volume of traffic in an already very busy location. It's a shame that these issues diminished our impression of the property because the staff was wonderful.
