The Mountain Chalet

Reviewed Oct 14, 2023
The Mountain Chalet may have the best ski-in ski-out access in all of Snowmass. In addition to that convenience, the hotel, believe it or not, serves two meals a day: breakfast and lunch. The former is a full breakfast, and lunch consists of soup, rolls, and fruit. The original owners have recently purchased the hotel and are upgrading the rooms and other areas. The hotel is located one level down from the mall. Indoor parking is available for a fee.

Our arrival was great, John the night manager was awesome. John went overall our options and benefits of staying at this place with great enthusiastic delivery. Then answered all our questions with great enthusiasm.

Thanks John :-)

Where do I start to give a one star to such a great location( 5 star). I usually do not give one stars. The reservation process was a nightmare. They do not give out confirmation numbers and for the last 3 months the email system could not send us any type of confirmation....they are aware of this issue. I called multiple times and still nothing. So there was a suprise when we arrived that our room which was booked at $287 rate and were charged at $379. The manager was suppose to get back to us when available but nothing we could do since we were checking in. Rude would be the understatement of how we were treated during our stay. We unpacked into the room and my husband was returning the cart and the lady at the front desk was pointing at him to a guest. The guest had a confirmed reservation and room number in an email ...the one we were in. They had no records of it. She had been staying there for 17 years and she was upset. The front lady said she would have to work it out with us. WOW!!! We switched rooms with the guest who was so nice and apologetic ...not sure when a guest in a hotel has ever had to ask another guest to move or that a front desk gave our private info to another guest. We moved rooms, poor guest. The room was fine but cleanliness including the stuff on dried on the curtains and in bathtub was concerning. The hot tub was missing a part so could not use it during our entire stay, the lunch/breakfast was good but maybe someone monitoring might of helped ( a child came back to the line and threw a handful of bacon back into the serving pan..kinda funny but a little gross). The manager never got back to us and we have no proof. Sad situation. I am sure this is not what the original owner wanted for the experience. The original website said 15 for onsite garage parking and it is really 20. I have written hundreds of review and this might be only the second one that I have one star for a hotel. I just have never seen people treated so awful by a front desk. Crazy

Room tip: Watch your bill. They overcharge The rooms are not clean The staff/manager were.....WOW...not sure how to say how bad the experience was

This is the second time we have stayed at the Mountain Chalet snowmass. Our first time was a great experience, but after this trip we will never be back.

The ski in, ski out location is the only great thing about this place.

The rooms are run down and have mold on walls and in showers and strong chemical smells to them. The pool / hot tub is under construction, we were sent to another property anytime we wanted to use that amenity. This wouldn't have been too bad, except for the fact that they did not have robes we could use to walk through the snowy air to get to the other property - they were always "in laundry."

The sauna is very clearly not up to code standards, it gets so hot that even trying to open the door will physically burn your skin. There's equipment falling out of the roof attached to the sauna and mold growing around it.

We paid for two rooms and on one we paid an additional fee for an "upgraded room." When we arrived the upgraded room was actually in no way upgraded from the second room. In fact it appeared smaller, older and dirtier. When the manager was asked, they explained the reason it was considered upgraded was because of the newer furniture. The television did not work in the room and when we called and asked for them to look at it, they basically made it our problem to figure out antennas. In the evening of the second night our 150 pound girlfriend laid down on the bed and the entire thing collapsed to the ground. Broken boards splintered all over the room, someone could have been severely injured. When discussed with the manager we received no apology, just an offer to pack up our stuff and move rooms in the middle of the night. We refused to pack in the middle of the night so the next morning we spent over an hour getting all our stuff back packed to move rooms - which was a massive inconvenience given all our ski gear and took away from the cost we had paid to be on the mountain.

The next day when we chatted with the manager we asked if he would be willing to all the issues we've had and his response was "I guess." We explained our problems and his response was again incredibly rude and full of excuses - he even made it a point to tell us they nailed the bed back together that fell with our friend as if it somehow invalidated what happened to us. We eventually got him to agree to remove the upgrade fee and he gave us 10% discount on one room - which is hardly worth all the hassle and rude demeanor we received. Frankly for what we had to ensure we should have had half our stay comped at min.

When chatting with the manager we asked for a late checkout on the last night. He agreed but asked us to call the morning of, we called 4 times down to the office from 9:30-10:00. No answer and voicemail all full. As we were getting ready and packing up around 11:30, he came down to our room and aggressively told us he never agreed to a late checkout and "we never called." That we had 30 min to be out of our room or we would be charged again.

We rushed, got down to the front desk and when we explained to him that we had discussed the late checkout the night before and called to no answer all morning he called us "liars".

This place needs a complete overall haul. It needs to be completely renovated starting with the people that are hired to communicate with the guests.

The only individual we spoke with the entire time that was not condescending or rude was John.

Take your money elsewhere, the ski in/ out location is not worth the danger, dirtiness and rudeness of this location.

Hotel was subpar, bed was comfortable but room has poor lighting throughout room, bathroom/toilet extremely small, old facility, working elevator but very small, breakfast was limited. The whole facility was sub-standard for the price.

Here’s the straight skinny on this place. It’s vintage - late 60’s early 70’s. Almost hipster cool, but actually better. It’s authentic. It is unfair to say this place is tired, it’s just old. But it’s clean. Everything works. And it has everything you need for a perfectly enjoyable stay. We were more than pleasantly surprised and even impressed. They offer free breakfast and a daily soup lunch. The food itself is nothing great, but it’s free/included. There is no better more convenient location in Snowmass Village. The value is there, and we will happily return.

Room tip: It’s worth it to park in the garage.
