Good value and picture perfect

Reviewed Jun 28, 2023
Okay we just came back from spending 1 week at VIK Arena, June 17-24, 2023. Firstly when we got to the resort the gentleman that is the bellman/concierge was so welcoming and first thing he said is "Welcome Home". Check-in was fast and we stayed in building 5 (5024) on the main floor. It had a partial view of the ocean and viewed the marina . It was quiet, but, sitting on the balcony at night you get bitten by the "no see-em mosquitos", you don't see them, but, you surely feel them after you start itching. The hotel has no control over mother nature. Having shrubs right in front of the balcony was probably a breeding area for the mosquitos. We heard the spray trucks, but, it was probably useless because it rained shortly after the spraying so it would have washed away whatever was sprayed.

The hotel is dated, but, kept clean and the room was sufficient considering you're outside all day, it served its purpose. The plumbing fixtures in the shower could definitely use updating but the shower worked and the pressure and the temperature was great.

The food was plentiful and you could always find something to eat. There was only 1 a-la-carte restaurant that has a different theme every night, and you don't have to make reservations, you just show up and you always get seated. If you didn't want that theme, you could go next door to the buffet. I enjoyed the variety at the buffet. Interesting that I overheard a conversation in the pool by a guy I believe was from Germany - named Alex - and heard him complaining about the food and that he doesn't trust anything there and especially meat. He was telling the gentleman he was speaking with that he takes a cab into Punta Cana to go to Domino's Pizza or Taco Bell. Really????? How sad that out of all the choices at the buffet you can't find anything suitable - pasta bar, fruits, vegetables, rice etc..... The snack bar near the pool always had hamburgers, hotdogs, French fries, salad and some times chicken, and a variety of pizzas. I can't believe that someone couldn't find SOMETHING suitable to eat and can't imagine how he is at home. Any way, he obviously has standards that he should have gone to a five start resort. We'll talk a little more on this particular person's behaviour.

The resort is dated and walkways around the pool and the pool floor are crumbling. Other than that the pool is clean and we were pleasantly surprised that the pools were salt water. Okay, here is my other beef with this guy named Alex. Him and his partner were so inconsiderate when smoking. They would go in the pool with their cigarettes and flick their ashes into the grate where the infinity water flow would go into. When they finished their cigarettes they would flick their cigarettes onto the ground around the pool, and to top it off they wouldn't pick up their cigarettes when they got out of the pool. First of all they shouldn't be smoking while in the pool, but, if you're going to smoke while in the pool - use a cup of water to dispose of your cigarettes. When they would sit on the lounge chairs and smoke they wouldn't use an ashtray and would just thrown their cigarettes on the ground around them without extinguishing the cigarette. Besides that being totally inconsiderate, it is also unsafe with people including children walking around barefoot. My husband and I are smokers as well and we always had ashtrays with us where we were sitting and when the ashtray would get too full, we would wait and then empty them in the garbage. I understand that people are on vacation, but, you are not vacationing alone, be respectful to others who are also on vacation.

The beach has really been destroyed by a hurricane where the beach is not level any longer. There's a big hill going down to the water. Some of the palm trees have their roots exposed and that was probably where the beach used to start from. Apparently Bavaro Beach used to be one of the most beautiful in the Dominican, but, I'm not sure if it was just this resort that hasn't repaired the damage to the beach or if all the resorts on the strip are the same. It's a shame cause it would otherwise be beautiful.

We had a wonderful relaxing week. It was hot, but that's to be expected in June. When you have the ocean and the pool, the heat isn't so bad.

It was an affordable vacation, and it had everything we needed, including wonderful people.

If you don't expect 5 star service at a 3 star resort, you won't be disappointed.

This is barely a 3 star resort and I struggle to even say that. The quality of the rooms as awful. First off, the Ac barely works. I even switched rooms and it's far from cool. The rooms are very old and outdated. The bed is not bad but quite hard. The food is okay but nothing special. Very mediocre food. The quality of the alcohol in the drinks is awful. Most of the alcohol tastes like gasoline. On a positive note, the beach is very nice and the water is a gorgeous turquoise. The pool area is decent. This is a very quiet resort with very little nightlife so if you're looking to party, this is not the place.

Room tip: Don't come here if you're looking to party.

Resort is decent as far as the look and beach view. Staff was attentive and friendly. That’s it!

Here’s why I’m writing this review:
Both myself and wife got sick 2 days in. Off and on diarrhea 5 out of 7 days. Then had a fever last day for 2 days and non stop diarrhea for 9 days now since being home. Finally had to see a doctor and prescribed me an antibiotic. Hope this helps. We didn’t have anything to drink or eat except at resort from our departure out of Philadelphia. We didn’t drink tap water. Either food/water poisoning or something else. Who knows. Both of us are very healthy.

Next the drinks were awful. Every liquor was watered down. Yes I tried every single one and just as shots. Worst alcohol ever. All mixed drinks were premade crap! Don’t know how they can serve this to people. Best bet is beer.

Food was very bland but ok. Some dishes were horrible and others ok. Nothing was Wow factor.

No air conditioning anywhere in entire resort except your room which was only slightly cool. So you’re eating in restaurants with open air concept and sweating your ass off in 100º heat index. Not pleasant. So wearing anything but shorts and tank tops is out. Forget about dressing up in any way unless you like being soaking wet in sweat.

There was a lot of little things I’m not going to mention because it would not make me want to write a review but I wish I did not go to this place mainly because I’ve been sick now for almost 2 weeks. Not good!

Room tip: It’s literally dead after 6pm. Nothing happening.

The alcohol is all well liquor. The food is okayish, and most of the staff is friendly.

The hotel is generally rundown. The food is OK, but what they call “beef” is actually goat meat despite the picture of the cow on the buffet placard. There are no blankets, just sheets that have been washed until they’re threadbare. The only good part of this hotel is the natural beauty of the beach.

The casino was garbage (take a $25USD cab ride to the Hard Rock if you like casinos), and the dive shop / water sports shack wasn’t the kind of place that experienced divers go to (walk down the beach a bit to Dolin Dive Center at the Grand Palladium Bavaro for a better experience).

The food and drinks were mediocre, but the service was passable except for the child at the front desk who tried to extort me when my key didn’t work at night. All in all, the experience was equivalent to a stay at the Holiday Inn just with a nicer beach.

Room tip: It was okay, but I wouldn’t come back.

Paid the same price as a Cuban vacation..I was in cayo coco 30 days earlier at Iberostar Daiquiri and this resort is better value by a mile. If you want a good budget hotel in punta Cana, this is it. Dont go to cuba! Obviously not the most luxuriest resort here, you get what you pay for, but for what i paid it didnt disappoint...it may be dated but it's clean and staff is nice, at least 90% of them. Good layout, everything is centered and close by.
Plenty of chairs at the beach and pool, no line ups anywhere, the food is very good at the buffet. Pizza at snack bar is excellent and plentiful. Beach is very nice even if damaged from previous storm. I strongly recommend for those looking for value.

This trip to Vik Arena Blanca in Punta Cana was a slight trip down memory lane as we couldn't finish our family vacation in 2017 due to a hurricane that beat up the hotel and most of the area. Nonetheless, we went back with positive vibes and couldn't wait to get back!

First and foremost I would like to say that this hotel has seen its glory days many years ago. There is so much neglected maintenance that in my opinion, should not ever be allowed in any hotel. Rotting wood, broken concrete in the pools (that ripped my toes) and overall missing it's shine which is a real shame as this hotel has something incredibly cosy. The broken concrete is a huge issue. Both pools have severe damage and also crumbling concrete at both pool edges. This is dangerous. Especially for little kids who play around. Another pool point is that there's no supervision at both pools, by the way. The rotting wood on the banisters are also a serious issue. We had to battle three stairs everyday, multiple times and having splinters in your hand isn't that much of a joy. They also are quite wobbly, so don't expect a safe support.

Safety wise - incredibly bad. The balcony doors at both of our rooms couldn't be locked. We heard serval guests complaining about this specific issue and another couple even told us that their passports got stolen. Another guest noted that all of his personal belongings and cash got stolen and mysteriously got found again (besides the cash) back by some employees. I will not share my personal opinion about that, but I do have my thoughts about this specific situation. Anyway, after serval complaints at the reception, nothin' ever happened. We never saw a handy man or anyone that tried to fix our problems. Same with the toilet that didn't properly flush and the lights in our rooms that did not work. Loads of big cracks underneath the doors and a rusty shower.

The positive - it still has that homey and cosy vibe and the overall staff is very kind. They will always ask how your day was and really try their best to give you a great experience. The food was also quite good! I did not experience any cold or tasteless food. The bar was alright, but unfortunately - alcohol abuse by many tourists. The drinks were good, but nothing special. Snacks at the pool? Check! Their stone baked pizza is amazing and so are the burgers and hotdogs. Hungry? Never ever! If you are a very picky eater, you might have some trouble, but I never encountered a day where I thought the food was low quality or bad. They try their best to keep the place as clean as possible, but unfortunately there always will be guests that simply don't care about their surroundings and those of other guests. You simply can't keep up with that.

The beach is a whole different story. The pictures you'll see on most booking sites are very outdated and don't reflect the current state of the beach. Loads of it is washed away due to erosion. People claim their beach beds early in the morning and since nearly 50% of the beach beds are not placeable due to the erosion, it is almost impossible to get a place in the shade. The beach now has sort of a "level" instead of a smooth way towards the ocean. When people claim their beds, they block these levels so it is quite an climb to actually get into the ocean. The ocean is still incredible and if you are lucky, you will see wild manatees. We were very fortunate to have a real close encounter early in the morning. Don't freak out these gentle giant on their way to some sea grass! Please also note the fact that there is no lifeguard on duty nor flags that indicate the status of the currents and ocean. You simply don't know if it is safe to swim. There can be strong currents and this is incredibly dangerous. Even if you are a very good swimmer (ocean) like me, always be careful and don't go in to the ocean too far.

Tip: don't walk on the beach early at dusk and down as you will get bitten by sandfleas that give you the most horrific itch you ever had in your entire life.

Also there was a mosquito invasion. Very tiny little sh*ts that you can barely see nor hear. Some people said they were immune to DEET. Unfortunately we will never know. The first time we went, we never ever encountered mosquitoes. Make sure you will bring good quality insect repellant!

The little store at the hotel is incredibly pricey. I know that due to inflation everything got more expensive, but charging 35$ for a bottle of insect repellant and 8$ for a bag of Cheetos is just insane. Taxi prices are also quit the charge. If you'd like to go to the Blue Mall (for some shopping and cheap groceries at Jumbo) you will be charged a minimum of 80$.

Overall, we did enjoy our stay and we still have a soft spot for this hotel but we will not return. The price quality range (we booked in euro's) is just ridiculous. If you're able to get a cheap and good deal and you don't mind the above, go! Otherwise, I would really advice to stay at another place.

It is a real shame because this hotel has such potential!
