The Ambiente Hotel Freieck was a wonderful accommodation situated only blocks from the center of Old Town. Chur is the oldest city in Switzerland, and Old Town was its historic core. Arriving by train from Geneva via stops in Montreux and Brig, we found the hotel a relatively short distance from the train station. Some walking on level pedestrian malls was necessary, but seating to rest along the way was abundant. Due to the incredible location of the hotel, we could easily immerse ourselves in the medieval architecture of Old Town, leisurely wander its picturesque streets and explore the many churches and squares. The hotel staff was quite helpful with suggestions for day trips by train to Liechtenstein and by cable car up Brambrüesch Mountain. They also expedited last-minute reservations on a Saturday night at a popular (and full) restaurant for some traditional, local cuisine.
Our room was spacious, bright and well-maintained with really nice views. The double bed was naturally the European equivalent of two twins pushed together with two separate duvets. Although it took some getting used to the frosted glass door to the bathroom with funky colored lights hanging above, it was definitely a unique, fun decorative element and something we will not soon experience again. The bathroom featured a huge, walk-in tiled shower area, which was actually large enough to have hosted a party.
The breakfast buffet was excellent with an extensive selection of items available, as well as made-to-order eggs. Naturally, we were happy to avail ourselves of mimosas with our coffee and breakfast to start the day off properly. It was the only meal served in their dining room but not an issue because of the many wonderful restaurants located within walking distance around the hotel. We review some of them on their own Trip Advisor pages. There was a binder in hotel reception with nearby restaurant information, and the hotel staff were more than happy to provide input. Rather than bar hop in the evenings, we enjoyed sharing some cheer and conversation in the hotel bar with other guests and the owners. What a great, relaxing and learning experience.
Don't forget to ask for your personalized complimentary Chur Guest Card. It provided free entry into a number of museums and even a 50% discount for the cable car up Brambrüesch Mountain. We certainly enjoyed a lovely stay at the Ambiente Hotel Freieck and would love to one day to spend time with the Stockmanns again.

A very dated, not very clean hotel, with not very helpful or pleasant front of house staff. The only positive I can think of is its old town location, with lots of dining choices within walking distance

Visited as part of a Ffestiniog Travel tour to the Rhaetian Railway. Situated in the older part of Chur. About a 10 to 15 minute walk uphill from the railway station( as an older senior citizen). Friendly and helpful staff who speak English well. Comfortable rooms with en suite facilities. Water always hot. Room housekeeping daily whilst I stayed there. Meal served was only breakfast but it was with extensive choices and of an unlimited nature buffet Style. Coffee machine served very hot coffee. Small bar serviced from the reception area across the hallway. Small beer cost 4.5 Swiss francs and a large beer 6 Swiss francs. Many small steps stairways to move around the building.. efficient two person and two suitcase lift.. I found that my smartphone only connected to the internet in the bar reception area of the building. A number of good restaurants in the vicinity for an evening meal. Personally could recommend the Capricorn restaurant Italian just round the corner. On the way back from a day on the railway walking up the Bahnhof Strasse the restaurant with the yellow umbrellas called Rasthof served Good Food especially Rosti style dishes with an extensive menu in English and English speaking serving staff at a price quite reasonable by Swiss standards.. 30 Swiss francs for a large beer and a Rosti. There was a quiet tree surrounded and garden surrounded Square near the hotel if you wished to be quiet and sit out in the evening air. And easy walking route to the railway station was to turn left out of the hotel and walk towards the Flavours restaurant and then turn left down the alley way to the Calenda bar, where the pedestrian crossing is obvious and continues on down the pedestrianized street to the railway station ( however keep your eyes open for bicycles and scooters and the occasional delivery van ! ) All in all a very enjoyable stay in Chur

Hotel is walking distance to the station. Lovely, friendly and helpful staff on arrival. Room nice sized with 2 single beds pushed together. Loved it as so comfortable. Stayed in room 305. Great views from room and bathroom if you open the window and large shower cubicle. No kettle in room and bathroom door is only a push to so careful if you have bathroom phobia like I do - going to the loo!! Great location in old town. Near to shops and restaurants. Brilliant.

From Zurich to take the Bernita Express - one of the well known Tourist Swiss Trains - you must go to Chur, a lovely town. There, Freieck Ambiente Hotel is a good option! Very near to the middle of town, is a good benefícios/cost option!

Went as part of a small group. Hotel is beautiful and well located in the town [which is largely pedestrian]. Breakfast good but the hotel does not have evening meals. My only beef is that our room had a shower over a bath which had no safety rail to hold onto when getting in and out. Staff were wonderful [and a bit overworked]
The beds are in the German style. I do not know whether it is an attempt to keep the birthrate down or whether they do not like their partners but it's their system of two single beds pushed together with a join between and separate duvets. Care possibly needed not to fall through onto the floor?
