Madrid used to be relatively good value for a major European city. Not any more. The tourists have finally discovered this wonderful city and this is reflected in the prices. We paid an average of €85 per night for three nights at this Hostal.
It’s location is superb - 2 minutes from Puerta del Sol. And in spite of the busy location the street noise was minimal thanks to two sets of shutters. Rooms next to ours were occupied by quiet guests but there was plenty of noise from above and below.
WiFi was good. There was no shortage of hot water and the shower was good.
But the room was very basic and very small - as was the (too soft) double bed. The bathroom was tiny. It was annoying that neither the washbasin nor the small bath had plugs. I was told they were not available.
There was no problem with cleanliness.
The room had an air conditioner but by the absence of the controller I assume it’s only available when staff decide it’s too hot.
All of these criticisms might be acceptable for a one night stay or a lower price. But for us this hostal was on the wrong side of marginal.

This hostel is located right next to the Sol train station in the middle of Madrid. The location is great and the beds are comfortable. You get your own keys, so you can exit and enter anytime you like.

A reasonable room in a likable location.

We stayed for 3 nights, mid February.
Location wise this is brilliant. In the heart of the foodie area you'll be able to find everything you'll like within a short walk. Reception were very helpful indeed when it came to pointing out potential places to go.
Because it's in the heart of the city there can be the associated noise one would expect however that's a trade-off.
The rooms are...basic. Perhaps basic is too basic a word to describe how basic they are. Not the most modern, not the most luxurious, but you know What, we get a very good deal on the price so it wasn't too bitter a pill to swallow.

We alway look for not a lot more than a place to rest our heads inbetween very active and food-filled days. Our stay here was probably right on our limit. If housekeeping had been below par we'd have moved on but as it was, it was comfortable, clean and convenient, just not a lot more than that.
