Just what I was looking for

Review of Downtown Hostel
Reviewed Jan 26, 2015
Great location, less than 10 min away from Las Ramblas.
I booked a dorm to share with other people. Quite small, but clean. Lady at the reception was really nice and helpful. Internet connection not great. No air conditioning, but fan.
Missing some individual light close to your bed.

Perfect location with a self service laundromat right across the street. We had two nights here to begin with and came back a week later for a third night.

Staff are ultra friendly and very helpful.

Double room has a fan (no air con but wasn't too hot) bathroom with shower and sink (no toilet but not a problem) and we also had a balcony which was nice.

Everything was really clean and tidy, including communal kitchen, bathroom and common areas.

Great WIFI - hard to find!!!!!

Value for money, we will be back!

Stayed here for 5 nights whilst visiting barcelona and found it clean friendly and laid back.

Well supplied kitchen meaning you can cook and it's located in an edgier part of the city so it's loads less touristy.

Whilst the rooms are big and clean and have lockers they can get a little hot and the front dorms get loads of street noise but nothin ear plugs can't solve.

The only strange thing was I found I had to move rooms three out of the 5 nights I spent there but what can you do.

Lovely staff too

To get things started, let me explain who I am. I am a 21 year old solo female traveler. I have been to 14 countries and counting. I have stayed in friends homes, apartments, hotels (3 stars and up), hostels, and B&B's. I really liked my time at this hostel because it has an excellent location and dinner was FREE every night! Yes, you heard me! There is a flyer on the community board that directs you to ask the reception desk for a dinner voucher to go to the Travel Bar and get a good, hot meal. You are entailed to as many dinner vouchers as you like. The only catch if that you have to pay for your drinks and it is only accepted between 7pm-9pm (all f this is written clearly on the voucher). It is very close by and I really enjoyed my time at this bar. One of their branches has excellent happy hour specials so you can hang out for happy hour (5pm-7pm) and then enjoy a free meal! There are free walking tours that leave daily from this bar as well; which I suggest you take advantage of because the guide I had was well informed and friendly.
The location is perfect because it is a few minutes off La Rambala so you are away from the loud, tourist trap center. The street which you walk to take you to La Rambala has a metro stop at the corner to take you all around the city as well, in case you want to go visit Park Güell and Sagrada (do it). You can walk to the beach without a problem and you have a food market right next door to the hostel, so you can pick up cheap meals here. The breakfast deal served here is AMAZING! SO delicious and cheap. There are very few restaurants in the Barcelona city center that are not rip offs. Besides the food market, I only found two good restaurants (both in food quality, quantity, and price) thanks to some friends I made who are locals. But there are many quick places to grab a bite to eat that are fairly priced if you look hard enough.
In addition, the room itself was not that memorable. There was just a double bed, a sink, a mirror above it, a wardrobe, and a nightstand. It was pretty small but had a window (to the interior space between the buildings- which is common in Europe). The bathrooms were very clean and there were so many of them! It was a good value for all that was included and the location is perfect. I would definitely come here again!

Room tip: Try to get a room that is not beside a bathroom because I can image that you hear people come in and out of them at all hours.

Just checked out of this hostel yesterday after spending 4 nights there in 3 different rooms (my choice, complicated booking). I found all the rooms and shower rooms very clean and well maintained and the location is excellent - could not have been better for the sight seeing trip I was on. You don't get a key to the main door, you have to use a buzzer but you're always let up straight away, 24/7. I will say that the signage is not great, just a small plague on the wall - waked passed it twice before I found it on arrival.

I had a large amount of contact with the staff which was all positive (as I said, complicated booking!!!) My room was ready for me when I arrived and I left without needing my bags holding after check out - but I know they do without any problem. The showers were warm, a little small but not enough to bother me. I was able to get a good WiFi connection in all the rooms I stayed in (3). However, the lack of plug sockets could be a problem - I was fine as my adapter gives me two sockets and I really only needed one for my phone. There was a problem with the fan in one room but I was very quickly given a temporary one and the original was replaced within the hour with what looked like a brand new one.

I didn't use the kitchen facilities, other than to fill my water bottle, but found it clean and it seemed well equipped. Drank copious amounts of tap water (as it was free and the weather hot) with no ill effects - there are many drinking fountains dotted around the city for refilling too!!!

All in all, it was a very clean, very well maintained, safe hostel in a very good location with good WiFi and I would stay there again and recommend it to anyone wanting cheap, basic accommodation in Barcelona. I will add I was probably the oldest guest they had - by about 30 years - but it was fine. Dx

Room tip: Stayed in rooms 105, 101 and 106. Room 105, the natural light was from a light well, no view therefore but was airy enough with an en-suite shower room. Room 101 had a balcony and a view of the street which was nice but noisy, no en-suite. Room 106 again the natural light came from a light well, no view therefore, but this time I found the room stuffy despite the fan - again no en-suite.
