Don’t waste your money

Reviewed Nov 16, 2021
We arrived at the resort an hour before check-in, hoping to be able to check-in early. This was not allowed, which I can’t complain about as we were early. What did bother me about it was the fact that the woman on the desk (whom we had to wait about five minutes for before anyone even came to the desk) didn’t even make an effort to check or confirm if our room was ready - it was just an automatic no. Once we did check in, the room did not smell good and was just old and tired looking. In the shower the next morning, I noticed a large clump of hair on the wall of the shower. Disgusting. I took a picture and showed it at the front desk. The only response was an apology and a comment that she would tell housekeeping. Breakfast was grim…..my husband had a hard boiled egg that was so over cooked the yolk was black. Other foods were completely gone.

Although this resort is in a beautiful location and could be lovely, it is tired, rundown and the service, quite frankly, was far below par. Friends who live locally were surprised it was still open when we were there in early November, as it apparently is usually closed for the season by then. Perhaps it should have been as it was not worth the visit and felt like a deserted, sad place. The saying “you get what you pay for” comes to mind as the rooms were quite cheap - I am just happy I didn’t pay more for this experience!

We arrived Sept 19th, we expected that all services would be available at Painter’s Lodge as it had been highly recommended as the best place to stay in Campbell River if you want to fish. Only rooms and the pub restaurant was open when we arrived. Everything else had been closed, including their April Point site and activity centre. When I booked or subsequent communications from the resort never indicated that services would be very limited during our stay. Also, realized a few hours after checking out that I had left two pieces of clothing in a dresser drawer. Immediately called and told exactly where the clothing was so we could return to pick them up. They couldn’t confirm with housekeeping at that time and never returned my call as promised. We called back twice and were finally told that housekeeping didn’t find anything. When we offered to come back as only 1 hour away, we then told the room was occupied, even though the resort was very quiet when we had been there the two previous evenings. We won’t be back to Painter’s and would not recommend given our experience. Also value for money was poor as rooms are quite dated and fairly basic for the prices charged

Room tip: Would confirm before booking what activities and services are available during your stay. Rooms were large but basic so get one with a view

I've stayed several times for work. The best stay by far was when the cheapest rooms were sold out and I booked an oceanview room. The lowest cost rooms are great value for the price, so was the oceanview room. Only thing I would criticize is a microwave would been good.

We had a lovely stay at this classic lodge in a quiet, lovely location right on the water.
The rooms were very large with comfortable beds and lovely towels. The central lodge has a beautiful lobby with a wonderful soring ceiling in logs. We were not there in the summer so I can't comment on the pools etc. but did notice they seem to be redoing the main pool out back. If you are looking for Glass and stainless steel this is not for you. All in all a comfortable stay.

Paid way to much for the room. Found out after we arrived that going rate was $229 and we paid $340. We asked to check in an hour early and received an email they couldn't accommodate our request but would do their best to accommodate us on arrival. We arrived at 3:15pm and had to change for a wedding at 4 (check in is 4). They told us we couldn't have the room so we asked for a place to change. We were pointed to the lobby washroom and had to change in bathroom stalls, some accommodation that is! We also found out that our friend was given an ocean view room with no reservation upon his arrival at 3pm for $229. Why was this not offered to us? Why did we pay $340 for a dungeon garden room? Why couldn't we have that room early to get changed for a wedding?

Next was the room. We had to leave the wedding between the ceremony and reception to check in (20 min drive ea way.) Finally got our cave of a room, dark and smelled like a mix of stale cigarette smoke, mold and fish. No bedside table lamp, tv remote didn't work and the tv was hanging off a broken mount with the cords hanging out the bottom, stains on the carpet everywhere, broken towel rod and toilet seat. No screens on the windows, no AC, mold in the bathroom faucet and the whole place had clearly last been renovated in the 80s.
Terrible room, terrible customer service and terrible rates. Better off with a cheap chain hotel.

Update: After 2 voicemails I was finally able to get ahold of the manager Kira. After explaining the above concerns with her politely she only seemed concerned with our friends room being undercharged. She told me she would pass the deficiencies with out room on to maintenance and get back to me. I never did here back from her even after 2 more emails to check in. There was zero apologies and zero compensation.

I know things a bit off right now with Covid so I can accept no housekeeping services and no dining. When we arrived and were unpacking our vehicle there were a couple of workmen with potty mouths nearby. When we got to our kind of stale smelling room, there was a dead bird on our patio table. I am not sure how well the hotel cleaned the room even though it states there are enhanced cleaning measures in place. The outdoor furniture was dirty so we wouldn't have used it. Food crumbs on the carpet. Coins under the bedroom chair and hair in the bath tub. They did not change out the toilet paper rolls between guests either. No towels or toilet paper in the loft bathroom.
At the continental breakfast the tables were not cleaned between guests and food only seemed to be replenished when the staff were asked.
We paid for a partial ocean view. Partial is stretching it. From main level you can't see the ocean at all. From the loft you can see just a bit due to the height of the trees that are there. Also, in the photos it's looks like you can access the beach. From what we understood you can not.
Stained couch cushions, non working light bulbs, shower water that went cold when someone flushed the toilet were other problems.
There was no place to empty our garbage outside as the bins were overflowing. Not a good idea when there was a bear hanging around the area.
Anyway, this poor place has had it's day. It needs to either close or renew itself.
