Review of Filmores Hotel
Reviewed Jun 26, 2022via mobile
This is an iconic hotel of Toronto. I came to the ballet and forgot to make reservations and at the last minute all my choice hotels were booked. So I ended up here as a last choice.
Must confess that when I first saw it, I was dismayed by its appearance until I stepped in and was greeted by Megan, a very pleasant young lady. I requested a first floor room(no elevator). I was told these rooms have no A/C. I asked:does it have a fan? Yes. I’ll take it. The room was not that little, private bath and windows!!! Very important to air the place. Ran out and bought plenty of room freshness paraphernalia. Although we are in a heat wave, it was a very cool room.
They should get rid of the carpet and place laminated floors instead.

It is a very basic hotel. They provided 2 soaps, towels in the bathroom(need to bring your own toiletries). No hair dryer. A fan, Big flat TV, a table and two chairs, Full size bed. Drawers. Night table with lamp(that is not working).

For a night it was not bad.

I discovered a new place through my window-Esra’s. I reviewed in another post.
The hotel is a few blocks from Younge-Dundas Sq Downtown Toronto.

I saw plenty of young people checking in for the upper floors.

Room Tip: A private parking lot is next to the hotel. Convenient

What can I say? You get what you pay for. I didn't read the small print and somehow missed this hotel is ABOVE A STRIP CLUB. Lol. I unfortunately was there on a Friday night and of course, the music was thudding until 4am. I probably slept about 3 hours.

But hey, maybe I should have read the small print. But just be aware, it's very noisy.

Staff were lovely and friendly when I was there. A couple of strippers walked into reception when I checked in which was an interesting experience. Took me a bit by surprise.

Room was pretty basic - small table, sink, small window, bed was comfy. Nothing to write home about but then I barely paid anything so I'm not sure what I was expecting.

Room tip: AS HIGH UP AS POSSIBLE for the love of GOD so you don't have to hear the strip club music all night

Stayed there before my morning flight to Saskatoon. Because it’s just an one night stay in Toronto, I was looking for cheap hotels in Toronto, then I found this one. Okay, where do I begin, the location was bad. I found homeless and sketchy people everywhere. It’s also located right above a strip club, yeah a strip club. It’s so loud at night. Very unfriendly staff. The wake up call was the most unprofessional way ever, like literally they came to my door and knocked. Save your money, go somewhere else!

Had the misfortune of booking this trash online. On reaching the hotel at 10 in the night, the receptionist told me that the booking was for 1 person in Queen room, while I had booked for 2 people. On contacting booking.com, as usual their response was delayed. On contacting his colleague(?), the guy let us go to the room without charging us. And yes, made us pay the entire amount for 8 days in advance.
The guy took us to the 3rd floor on stairs (no elevators and creaky wood floor). On reaching the room, the room smelled as if a pesticide had been sprayed into the room. Changed the room, to the 2nd floor, where to my utter shock found that the music downstairs was too loud. It was then I discovered, that the hotel was above a strip CLUB... With a heavy heart, took the room feeling that it was better than the smelly rooms on 3rd floor. However, when the music didn't stop at 3 am, my old mother got agitated. Adding to it, the bed was not just small but rickety and maybe full of bugs as well. Tired and frustrated, she went to the reception, where a new guy gave us again 3 options on 3rd floor, each one more smellier than the previous. Utterly frustrated, we asked him if there was any other bigger room, which we went to and found was not smelling. Without any options, had to cough out 230CAD more and take the room. Just feel so cheated now, given that could have got better hotels at overall 118 CAD, a night.
Some other gems about the hotel:
1. There is no phone in room to call reception. You have to go the reception, every time for every minor thing.
2. House cleaning happens once a week, if you are taking a room for a week+. Wtf! Have to ask for towel change and toiletries.
3. Semi-clad girls are in a passage adjacent to hotel lobby and the music is super loud.
4. The adjacent area is damn scary, and outside the hotel you end up meeting a lot of addicts, asking you scarily for 'change'.
5. The walls are so thin, that if TV is on in an adjacent room, so you end up hearing the entire thing. For some wierd reason, had a loud talker in the adjacent room, who kept TV on for the entire night.

To give some credit, yes the location is near to major attractions downtown and the receptionists were helpful. But the hotel is a trash-bag, to be avoided at all costs!

Part of the hotel building is also strip bar, both parts are connected. We have been there for just one night during city visit. Price was very cheap comparing nearby accommodations. Wifi connection was fast and free. Staff asked for deposit, which was fully returned during checkout.

I came way earlier the check in time, however, very pleasant and welcoming lady administrator allowed me to get in the room. It was heavenly great after almost 20 hours of hitting the road. I highly appreciate her gesture. Room is not small and bright. The bed is comfortable. The bathroom was full of daylight, white and clean. OK for a couple of nights. Staff was pleasant.

I didn’t like the location much (near the street with several shelters for homeless), though I read about it before booking. I used taxi in the evening. Be aware those with heavy luggage, there is no elevator, only stairs, just FYI.
