Disappointing Stay

Reviewed Jul 24, 2023
We have stayed there before and liked it. We love the location near the harbour. The room was fine, but nothing worth noting. The bathroom was ok but, although the shower pressure was good, the hardware was cheap. The room ihad a big balcony with nothing on it, but a cheap table and chairs. I do not think the room warranted $385 a night, plus about $25 to self park. There was no valet option. We paid $48, plus tip for a terrible breakfast consisting of microwaved eggs, one and a half pieces of thin, dry toast, frozen potatoes and salty dry bacon. We ended up leaving some and going somewhere else. Sadly, I can no longer recommend this hotel.

Had king bed in room with harbour view. Looked out over parking lot and then harbour. Parking lot fine with me because cars are not very high and don't block view. Mentioning this in case it bothers other people. About two minutes walk to boardwalk; can go both right and left along boardwalk to stores, restaurants, etc. . About 7-8 minute walk to Maritime Museum and Art Gallery. About 10 minute walk to Great Atlantic Superstore in case need drugstore, buy fruit, etc. Overall, great location.

Lights on small night table with drawer on either side of king bed with two electrical outlets on each side. Electrical outlets near desk and anywhere else I wanted. Small table beside comfortable chair which swings over chair so can rotate to face harbour or TV. Adequate hanging and drawer storage. Thermostat supposed to provide heating or cooling. Hot air did not seem to be coming out. Engineer came quickly. Initially said air coming out. I said yes, but not warm. He measured with his thermostat and agreed not hot air. Went into unit, could not fix on spot, so gave me a replacement.
Bathroom clean and modern with no stains except for slight stain on tub near shower. This is because shower while hot has only a small range and water seems to accumulate in indentation in tub. But this means have to step out of nice warm shower to access shampoo, conditioner, and shower gel in dispensers fixed to wall at end of shower. Why not put them on side of shower near where shower is.
Why not perfect.
No safety deposit box in room. Can use one at Front Desk but that is inconvenient. Why not safety deposit box in room. Do not do daily cleaning unless you request. I did request explaining I did not need towels replaced but wanted bed made and garbage thrown out. For what they charge, daily cleaning should be automatic.
Shower gel bottle not releasing shower gel. Initial reaction was housekeeper had left and would have to wait for next day. I replied I was taking shower that night and could they not go into housekeeper's cupboard and get me a shower gel dispenser. Which they did, but only because I pushed.
They have a computer with Internet access for guests without smart phones which is very good. Marriott has its own sign-on code. But sign on to computer not working. Initial reaction was have to wait for next day when IT came in. When I "pushed", Front Desk turned computer off and on, and it started working. But again I had to push.
So very good but not perfect.

Room tip: The Zen Room is not open. Basically appears to be under construction.

We stayed here for three nights. We arrived very early as it was Canada Day! We parked our car and began walking the waterfront area. This hotel is very convenient if that’s what you want to do. The Maritime Museum is a very short walk from the front doors and go left along the boardwalk. It’s right to the Pier 21 Museum and that is a much longer walk.
We returned to the hotel about one in the afternoon and there was a King room ready for us. The staff at the check in were pleasant and helpful. Our room was very neat and tidy; just as you would expect for just over $350/night, all in. We were on the 7th floor and it was an easy walk up to the terrace view n 8. Well worth going for a peek! There was a lot of fog when we were there but still quite a wonderful view.
Our tv was not working and a young man from maintenance came quickly and had it working in a few minutes. He was pleasant and the hotel staff that we met in the hallways and elevator were very nice, too. Management obviously hires friendly and competent staff. Bravo!
The room decor was fine but the sofa bed was not the most comfortable for sitting on. More pillows night help with that. The bed was comfortable with nice linens. The bathroom was large and well designed with a half wall between the toilet and sink area which I think is more hygienic than in some hotels.
We did not eat in the hotel. (We enjoyed eating at The Bicycle Thief Restaurant and it’s right out the main hotel doors and about a 5 minute walk along the boardwalk. Went for dinner one night and lunch the next day.)
There is one tricky thing at the hotel and even though another reviewer pointed it out, we had trouble finding the door to the underground parking. Duh! So if you approach the hotel from Salter Street and park near the front door, when it’s time to park, go straight ahead and look for a garage door on the right. Do not go out of the hotel drive on to the road as we did……missed it. So, drive slowly and keep looking right. The doors are tucked in behind the front wall. I think the hotel should have a photo prepared for the desk clerks to show guests who are there for the first time. Once you know where it is, it’s easy to find.
Parking, with tax, is just over $25/day.
The streets in this area are hilly so being on the waterfront is an asset if you like flat walking. We did walk to the Citadel from the hotel and it is a hilly trek. We neglected to take our rain gear which would have made it better but it is walkable.

We are glad we chose this hotel for our brief stay in Halifax.

We have stayed in the Montreal Courtyard Marriott, our go-to place to stay when we visit there. We have recommended it to family and friends. By contrast, the Halifax experience was dreadful from beginning to end.

At the very top of the complaints list was the rat in the dining room - not a mouse, a full sized rat. This was very upsetting. When we reported it to the front desk we were given an apology and informed that their "usual exterminator" would be contacted. To our knowledge, this was not escalated to upper management.

The dining room itself, the Bistro, is like a McDonald's. The menu is on board above the service counter. The selection is generic American, with not a seafood item anywhere, not even a bowl of chowder. (This is Halifax Nova Scotia!!). The guests pay up front at the counter and take their coffee in paper cups to a table and wait for their order. Orange juice is served in the bottle. A glass has to be requested. The napkins are paper. On the evening of the rat sighting (June 18th) there were no staff in the Bistro, and a cardboard sign said "We will be back in 5 minutes". Maybe the rat could read.

The hotel room was adequate. The fridge was empty. No complementary bottle of water was to be seen. There was one thin bar of soap to be shared between the bathroom sink and the bath.

No one at a managerial level spoke to us at any time despite the trauma. The staff at the desk wished us a pleasant trip and hoped we would return soon. The bill for two nights was C$931.04.

On arriving home, I wrote to the Hotel describing our experience in detail and requested a refund. An immediate, almost robotic E mail response from hotel management apologized for "failing to meet our expectations" and informing us that "the leadership team will ensure that all necessary guidelines are in place to prevent this from happening in the future", It was hoped that we would choose to stay at the Courtyard Marriott the next time we were back in the Halifax area. Not a single item of concern was addressed - the rat, the dining room experience, the emotional trauma. Nothing.

We have stayed at this location before. It is extremely clean and kept in good condition. Our room was clean, comfortable and quiet. Check in and out was smooth and effortless. Staff were quite friendly and accommodating.
Like most all hotels these days, housekeeping is only provided on every second or third day depending at what hotel you stay, and this location was no different. While I don't see much of a problem, towels should be refreshed daily. We stayed for 6 nights and almost every day we had to request having our towels refreshed and it had to be done before 2 p.m. each day. There was a day or 2 where it never happened, but fortunately we made do with what we had.
Hotel parking is in short supply and you have to park across the street at a pay by plate location. There are many restaurants, pubs and bars all within close distance. Overall a great location.
