Nice Hotel, Horrible Breakfast

Review of Villa del Mar
Reviewed Jun 14, 2022
For those of you that never went to Turks and Caicos, Grace Bay beach is one of the best beaches in the world. The beach is very long, but the center part is the widest and has the most powdery sand.

This hotel is located in the BEST part of Grace Bay beach. The location is superb.

The hotel, however, is not ON the beach, but behind one of the most exclusive beachfront resorts, the Grace Bay Club (GBC). You just need a small walk through GBC to go to the beach. In fact, Villa del Mar offers beach services (lounge chairs and towels) next to the GBC beach area.

The hotel is small, but very cute. It consist of 4 building of 4 floors each with 4 apartments per floor, two swimming pools, one jacuzzi and one Tikki Bar.

Our studio was very ample, with balcony to the pools, a king size bed, a queen sofa bed, a kitchenette and a big bathroom. It was fully stocked with kitchen utensils. I believe no room has ocean views, as GBC is in front.

Service was good, but not exceptional. Local people are not that warm.

We were two male adults and requested two beds instead of a king size single bed. We were told that all studios have king size beds. If we wanted 2 beds, we would beed a 2 bedroom apartment. As such, one of us slept in the sofa bed, which was OK but not as luxurious as the main bed.

What was really inconceivable to me was the cheap and basic complimentary breakfast they served daily. In these beach hotels, breakfast is very important. Just see the pictures, and you will understand. HORRIBLE and CHEAP breakfast for a hotel with rates from USD 250 a night. There were no eggs, no cheese, no ham, no fresh juice, no omelets, cheap bread, cheap pastries, basic fruit, uggh. I went only once.

I highlighted the fact to the hotel Manager (Josalee Stubbs). To my surprise she cared less, sent me a list of what was offered (I knew it already) and blamed it on not having a kitchen (not true).

The island is very expensive in USD. But to save pennies on breakfast was NOT a good idea.

Just back from a 1 week stay at Villa Del Mar. Purchased it through a TravelZOO/ Air Canada deal last minute. First time to the island and stayed in a studio room 3rd floor, bldg A. Transfer from the airport was smooth, in an AC van with only 6 people. Ride is about 15-20 min from resort. Check in less than 5 min and front desk Oliver was super kind and welcoming. First stop en route to our room was to grab a couple of complimentary Rum Punches from bartender Captain Bill. This guy is so cheery and fun to watch make drinks! Great to talk to for local tips and told us where to shop and great spots to eat. Thanks to Captain Bill for playing my song requests by the pool, a little Justin Bieber playing softly in the background made for perfect relaxation by the pool . The 2 pools and the grounds are kept immaculate, landscaping is beautiful. Water temp is warm and inviting, and throughout the week, my husband and I often had both pool to ourselves. No nonsense with saving chairs or finding a comfy spot to relax. Washrooms, beach towels and Captain Bill, all just steps away. Our room was located 3rd floor building A, closer to the small pool. ( Building C closer to Beach and larger pool). We had a beautiful view of the both the pools and Palm trees everywhere. Even a little peek a boo view of the ocean! Room was so clean, lots of towels, and strong AC. Maid staff are working hard here folks, so be generous! Room has huge sliding doors leading out to a large, furnished balcony. Ours had a lounge chair and table for 4. Just be careful of the time of day you sit out, mosquitoes and other bugs are hungry in the early am and evening and had a feast on me. Bring bug spray!! Also, don't leave the balcony door open for any length of time as the mosquitoes will make their way inside and feast some more. Room was great in that it had a washer and dryer, kitchenette with sink, dishes, fridge, toaster, coffee maker. Grocery store is about a 15 min walk and you can stock up on snacks, alcohol, whatever you need. Comfy bed and pillows, living area and table to eat. Only complaint with our room is that it did have a strong musty/moldy smell to it. Location of this resort is dynamite. Short 3 min walk to the beach, close to the Infinity Bar which in my opinion was the best food of our trip. 5 min walk to Casablanca casino. 10 min walk to COCO van and COCO bistro. Beach location is situated right inbetween Grace Bay Beach resort and Ocean Club West. Every day we were greeted with huge smiles by Kerone and Lerone who provide your towels and beach chairs daily. These brothers tag team am and pm shifts to provide you with amazing comfort and drinks. They will set up anything you need. EASY PEASY! Drinks on the beach? You got it. Stand up Paddle Boarding? They will arrange. Honestly these guys will take care of you so well. Love these guys!!!! Great first time experience. Last bit of advice, if you can book your trip throughout the week, do it. The airport is crazy busy on Sat and Sun and does not have the infrastructure to deal with all of the flight traffic. We were warned of this also, but leaving last minute didn't have the flexibility to change the weekend flight. Either way, all your troubles will melt away at this place!

Room tip: Buildings are 4 storeys and equipped with an elevator.

The staff is amazing especially John John and his brother who was on the beach. They provided a five star service to me and my sisters.❤️ The front desk staff made sure we had everything we asked for. My sisters and I did not have to worry about our safety. Overall a good place to stay

This was my first time in Turks and Caicos. Weather was amazing, thankfully. Villa Del Mar was great. People were nice and friendly. Rooms were clean and spacious. My only con would be the gnats/mosquitos in the room and restaurants. Whether we sat inside or outside, they were everywhere. In the bathroom, in the closet, everywhere. The more we killed the more showed up. We asked our room attendant to spray but it didn't do anything. I’m thinking they were coming directly out of the sink drains or air vents. Other than that we had an amazing time. Our beach attendants Lerone and Kerone, twin brothers, were the absolute best! And a special mention to Manville at the Grace Bay Club he was also very nice and helpful. Ask for them if you go!

This is a great place to stay. The people and the front desk were so helpful with anything that we needed. Looks just like the pictures if not better. This will definitely be my go to place the next time I come.

We stayed at Villa Del Mar for 5 days/ nights. Loved our room. Very spacious, comfortable, cozy and clean and you can’t beat the kitchenette. Grocery store is a short walk so we stocked up on necessities. Enjoyed the simple continental breakfast each day. The walk to the beach is a few minutes and we even had a slice of an ocean view from our 3rd floor balcony. I HAVE to RAVE about the on-site service. The staff is amazingly sweet and helpful. Wesline at the front desk was our go to!! She helped us with rental car, questions and pretty much anything we needed. Also LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Kerone and Lerone on the beach!!! They were our bff’s. So warm, friendly, kind and accommodating. Will definitely come back and stay at Villa Del Mar. it is the perfect fit for us. Quiet, smallish and just perfect!!!!
