Melia Cayo Santa Maria delights many guests with its picturesque beachfront location and the crystal-clear waters that beckon sunrise admirers. While some travelers have highlighted the hotel's value and cost-effective pricing, others have expressed concerns over food quality and service inconsistencies. The vibrant entertainment is a hit, yet the hotel's charm is slightly diminished by the dated condition of its otherwise spacious rooms. Although the grounds are praised for their cleanliness and maintenance, and amenities like food and beach services are generally well-received, the scarcity of minibar items and certain amenities has been noted. Overall, the hotel's service garners commendation for its friendliness and professionalism.

This was our fifth time to Cayo Santa Maria and our fourth time to Melia . This is a small hotel with staff that truly cares.
Please remember that a 4 -4 1/2 star in Cuba is not the same as a 4 1/2 star hotel in the USA.
The rooms are clean and the beaches are the best around.
There is a free hobie cat sail boat at the beach that is offered to guests which we went on twice. We couldn’t believe it was free as it was a great highlight to our week and we gave the boat handler a nice tip for his expertise!
This is a quiet hotel with a nightly show in the small theatre OR entertainment in the lobby bar.
Many people bring cards and crib boards but we like to sit in the open air part of the lobby and look at the moon and stars and feel the breeze on our hair while sipping on Spanish Coffees.
We love the Tex Mex restaurant and the Japanese restaurant.
The buffet has tuna, salmon, clams, chicken, beef, and squid at one hot station and pasta and sauces at the other hot station. There is cheese, and cold veggies along with many more dishes.
The 24 snack bar has delicious omelettes in the mornings and great thin crust pizzas all day.
The snack bar now has the best French fries and this year they have ketchup that tastes very much like the ketchup we love in Canada.
One day out of seven they ran out of beach towels ,but this happened to us in Cancun ,so we know now to bring light weight beach towels from home, every where we travel.
This hotel gives you their best.
The staff gives you their best. If it’s not good enough for you, then please remember that it’s still the best that they have to give!!
Your opinion and word of mouth is their livelihoods:so when you return home and share your experiences, please be kind!
Five years ago one could barley get wifi in the lobby. Now for a CUC (equivalent to one US dollar), you can have one hour of wifi even in your room.
We bring bubba cups and air mattresses for our pleasure.
We bring the staff gifts of toothpaste, deodorant, rubberized garden gloves, reader glasses, and insulated drink cups. They don’t expect anything but appreciate everything!

Melia was my first out of country vacation and was the best first experience i could ask for! The staff was super friendly made us feel very welcomed. I Was travelling with a college friend who also was on her first resourt vacation saftey was never a concern during our stay. Rooms very clean and roomy our view was great! The rest of the resort was very clean (very impressed) Lots of entertainment through out the day and disco at night was very fun! We were entertained continously. Excursions that they offered (we did 3) also great! The food was alright/good was plenty of options can for sure find somthing for everyone the grill by the beach for lunch was our favorite!(so good) drinks also great! We loved it and already discussing when we are going back hopefully with more friends :) i am so glad Melia gave us such a positive first experience!
Cons: scuba diving intro course was advertised we tried x2 days to go for the intro we were sent over the the hotel next door each time we searched the pool for the sucba diver who was suppose to be by the pool but was nevere there, my friend really wanted this experience so was frustrating wasteing 2 mornings waiting/walking around for the instructor and walking between resorts multiple times to speak to our rep. (Our rep was awesome but cant fix everything) at one point my friend was on the phone with someone from the other hotel who again said someone was by the pool but still not visible to us.
the patio doors and screen were hard to pull open and closed
Internet costs one CUC an hour - our 2nd or 3rd day went to purchase 3 hours paid 3 CUC and once we went to access the internet was only given 1.5 hours rather then the 3 hours that was paid for so we just checked in the office once we purchased any additional hours.

I was at the Melia Cayo Santa Maria hotel for Christmas 2019, the rate is a lot higher but averaged out over the year for me it is worth it.

I have been to the hotel many times and I guess I don't have too much new to add.

I would like to say my welcome when I was arrived was over the top, the bell boy was waiting for me, reception called my name and had my keys ready for me, and I was off to and into my room within 5 minutes of arriving at the hotel. Good job!

My room was kept clean and stocked. The AC was strong and quiet.

My team as usual was working the lobby bar. Great bunch of guys that provide the most friendly and attentive service. Some of them are working the new beach bar at the other walkway.

My snack bar cooks were always there and ready to adjust my order a little if I wanted something different.

December can be windy and cooler so I did not enjoy the pool like I usually do, and never did go into the ocean since it seemed a little dangerous.

Yosvany at the beach bar always had a drink ready when he saw me coming down the walkway.

Christmas dinner was well organized. I was out all day but the hotel was kind enough to have my Christmas Eve buffet reservation sent to my room. My only comment these days, and I know the hotel likes to put on a food show display, is that keeping food out on display for hours is not healthy, and maybe over the next few years a different system of providing freshly cooked food to order for these special occations would be more suitable. Also, given the rate for the week, I would really like the shrimp to be cleaned and deveined. On a side note I am a welcome vistor of the Sol hotel and their Christmas Eve buffet and show was a blast. My hat goes off to the Director of the Sol.

I will be back for my long term stay in May 2020. See you all again then.

If you are looking for a vacation with a nice beach (minus all of the cigarette butts left by inconsiderate travellers), nicely maintained grounds and pool, this is a great option. However, if you are expecting a 4.5 to 5 * hotel, this is not the case. The rooms and bathrooms definitely need to be upgraded and updated (mattresses with springs sticking out, stained linens, mould and ants in the bathrooms etc.).

The food options in the buffet consist of everything over salted and cooked with +++ oil, selections are the same and there were food shortages. If you want a quick meal from the snack bar, be prepared to share the area with birds and all of their droppings as well.

The hygiene and sanitation of this resort have a lot left to be desired and definitely bring your own hand sanitizer (unless you are okay with sharing germs with everyone) since there is nothing there for you to access there. Limited food selections and limited utensils to pick up your food with. The restaurants (al a carte) which you book separately have better options, but portions are small and these book up quickly so book these at your first chance.

Beach towels are scarce and it took 3 days into the trip to get a beach towel. I was told the laundry is done 48 kms away and they don't have any. How can you have a beach resort without towels?

Smoking is to be in designated areas, but this is not enforced and unfortunately you have people taking advantage of this smoking in enclosed areas (including around children) and everywhere else in the resort including the guest rooms. Advertising suggests smoking in "designated areas" but this is not enforced, so just consider it to be a smoking resort period and you will not be disappointed.

I have traveled extensively and this resort has lots of potential but would benefit from better management and addressing some of the concerns identified above. Staff are mostly friendly and the porters go out of their way to help you. Some of the front guest staff speak limited english and this is a challenge for english speaking travellers.

As for gifts and leaving items, I was disappointed by the response from the maid and learned that the maids are the ones that get most of the gifts. Consider leaving items for others including the porters and gardeners. On the last day we gave many items (including lotions/soaps, candy etc.) to the gardeners and they were incredibly grateful and appreciative.

Overall, I would not recommend this resort based on the advertised ratings and offerings. Cuba has so much to offer in terms of the beaches and the safety, but this experience would not have me rushing back to the same resort or Cuba anytime soon.

Dear Explore186665, First of all I would like to thank you for choosing Melia Cayo Santa Maria for your holidays. We apologize for all of the inconveniences you mentioned and we are very sorry that the service received was not up to the standards you expected and deserved. Regarding the food, our team works hard to offer a varied offer that manages to satisfy the most diverse tastes of the customers who visit us, however we will consider your comment and focus our work on improving the variety and quality of our dishes. Regarding birds, although containment measures are taken, our location encompasses a rich variety of endemic fauna, which has earned it the status of “Biosphere Reserve” and makes it one of the most exotic places in the Caribbean. the containment of birds in open places sometimes gets out of hand. Regarding the smoking areas, you can only smoke in outdoor areas unfortunately many customers smoke where they want and do not respect the prohibitions of not smoking We assure you that the improvement in all our services is a continuous process and our priority is customer satisfaction, so we will take into account each of the points treated by you.

We stayed Feb 3-10. Our room was clean, comfortable and had lots of hot water. Thank you to the gentleman who stocked our fridge. The food, lots of eat, and you can find it everywhere!!! There's no reason to go hungry. A decent variety at the buffet, 24 hour snack bar a good menu, beach bars have great burgers and a la cart's have good portions, tasty at all places. Lots and lots of places to get drinks and cappuccinos at the lobby bar and snack bar are top notch. The beach is great, nice sand to walk along and no shortage of beach chairs. The grounds are beautiful. The gardeners who take care of them should be proud of themselves. I can't remember the names of all we met, but a huge thank you to all the hard working and friendly staff. We were treated very well. We didn't tip that much using pesos but brought plenty of gifts with us that we tried to share with all. Some new baseballs, a couple of used ball gloves, lots of clothing, make up, nail polish, sun glasses, tooth paste and tooth brushes, crayons and coloring books and shoes to name some. We always bring our own beach towels, we left these with gardeners, these people can get forgotten. I hope these items can be of use. Would I return, absolutely yes! The other reviews that state it's the staff that makes with resort so good is a true statement. So to the staff thank you once again. You've given us the gift of your kindness and that makes for happy memories.

We stayed at this resort over Christmas

Food: 7/10 The buffet can get repetitive, we ate a lot of pasta and rice.. but everyone should be able to find at least a few things they like. Daniel makes the most amazing omelettes you’ve ever had. The coffee and cappuccinos are also delicious. The snack bar has really good hot dogs and French fries 24hrs. The Japanese a la carte is delicious.. the TexMex has questionable meat therefore I do not recommend. Danny made us our own delicious lobster dishes on Christmas Eve & all the servers were an absolute delight.

Rooms: 8/10 The AC is amazing! The water pressure in the showers is really good too. The only small negative was we had an ant problem BUT we had brought Deet bug spray and fixed it ourselves.. I understand bugs are sometimes out of a maids control.

Beach/ Pool: 10/10 absolutely stunning, there were always chairs available. December is a cold month there!! Expect wind and rain but it’s still beautiful! Pack some warmer clothes in winter months. Always available pool chairs and they will bring you drinks right to your chair.

Spa: 10/10 Yandry at the spa is so friendly, he spent time sharing Cuban culture with us and we ended up going back just to say hi everyday! The couple massage is lovely. They also have very nice saunas.

Bar: 9/10 The lobby bar makes the best drinks the night time staff is a blast! We made so many new friends. Would go back just to see the bartenders again. A daiquiri though is not a Canadian style daiquiri.. still yummy!

Entertainment: 8/10 They always had something in the lobby.. a great violinist, a juggle act, mariachi band etc & kids shows on stage which kept them out of the adult area which was nice.

The only negatives were the convenience shop people are very rude.. they are the only people we didn’t find friendly. They ignored us and were not helpful in the cigar room (which is wildly overpriced). The bus ride from the airport is also a good hour and a half BUT you get to see a lot of the Cuba countryside & little towns.

Wifi works well its a 1CUC for an hour.

Overall beautiful and we will be back to see the people.. they made the trip. Cuba is the type of place you give love and you get 10x more in return❤️

I recently stayed at Melia Cayo Santa Maria for ten days and I loved it. The beach is spectacular and Alexi and Ernesto always had a chaise lounges for me and looked out for me. Thank you, guys, The pool is beautiful and I never had a problem getting a chaise lounge in the afternoon, partly because I liked to sit around the back of the big pool. Katya looked after my room beautifully; it was always clean with great AC and lots of hot water. Entertainment was excellent and I loved my morning coffee in the Lobby Bar as well as my evening cocktail watching the evening entertainment. A big shoutout to Pedro who always knew what I wanted and looked after me so well. You’re awesome, Pedro! Loved the Beach restaurant and the grill. The buffet was good and I could always find something that I enjoyed. ChiChi and Yainelis were lovely and attentive. Everyone who works at Melia is so friendly and kind which added greatly to my holiday. Travelling solo can sometimes be difficult but I never felt unsafe and always felt like the staff was looking out for me. Some things are beyond the control of the staff such as beach towels, certain food availability, availability of beach chaises and unfortunately, I saw some ‘guests’ treat the staff rudely. You can’t expect a great location for a chaise lounge if you show up at 11 am. Foods that you eat at home may not be available here but I didn’t go for the food. I went for the sun, the beach and the pool. I got that and more thanks to the staff who became friends by the end of the trip. Thank you to everyone for such a relaxing and wonderful vacation. I will be back.

This was my third time to this resort and my first time traveling solo however I never felt like I was alone. As a single female I wouldn't be comfortable traveling solo somewhere else I am very grateful for the staff here who have become family or friends to me. The staff, all of the staff at this resort are amazing, wonderful warm amazing people. This hotel is my home in my off seasons of work.

Yoandry, Yoseet & Luis Yoel at the beach bar go above and beyond every time & have hands down the absolute best food, drinks, service & conversations on the resort. They take great pride in their new beach bar and you can tell with the constant upkeep and cleaning they do. They take the time to really talk and get to know their clients, they remember their names and drink orders and make each and every guest feel special. If you've never worked a service/bar job you may not appreciate how extremely difficult that is to do. But these 3 guys do it daily with new faces they are incredible.

Yasin, Juan Carlos, Ernesto, Jorge Luis and all the night crew at the lobby bar have amazing memories, service and always have smiles on their faces.

Marlon, Wildding, Gennry, Lucy and everyone at the snack bar are absolutely wonderful even if it's 2am and you want 4 pizzas.

Last but not least the entertainment team in no particular order Felipe,Yoanny,Juana,Nayibi,Alex,Alan Alberto,Danna,Darbel,Daniel, Nigier & Arel. No words can describe how absolutely wonderful and amazing each and everyone of them are. Always happy and smiling with a ton of different activities for you to join from water polo to beach volleyball to competitions by the pool, to dance lessons. They all work incredibly hard and insanely long hours with smiles on their faces. Even when they aren't technically working they are still out talking to clients and dancing the night away and making sure everyone feels included and having a great time. I am thoroughly grateful to have you all as friends.

Muchas gracias a todos en Melia, los extraño a todos. Muchos besos. Hasta abril 💚 Tatiana

I just came back from Cayo Santa Maria and I stayed, yet again, at the Melia Cayo Santa Maria. Like many other travellers who keep going back there, here is why ; the best beach, beautiful gardens, great pools, great bar staff, a fantastic BBQ at the beach restaurant, and I especially like the fact that the site is not too big so it makes for a very convivial location where it is easy to find your way and easy to make new friends. Everyone who works at this Melia is so friendly, wether it's Ernesto and Alexi at the beach who will always find a good spot for you and set your chair up, same thing around the pool, the buffet and the restaurants staff who welcome you with warm hugs like you were family and not to forget the front desk staff who are just wonderful, always there to help you and to make sure you have the best holiday ever! Thanks everyone for your smiles and your "joie de vivre"!! Can't wait to be back!

When we arrived at our room the bellboy suggested that maybe we might want to consider asking for a different room. That should have been a clue as to what was waiting for us. Our room had dirty sheets and towels from previous guests. It took two days to get them changed out. There was black mold on the walls in the room. There was ants all over the room including on the bed. There was obvious water damage on the doors and walls from I assume the hurricane that came through a couple years ago. The food in the main buffet was terrible. The fish was all from frozen. Nothing fresh. There was flies flying all over the buffet dishes. Half the time they had no plates, so you had to use a bowl. My wife had cockroaches run out from the dishes stack when she tried to pick up a plate once. There very little fresh vegetables or fruit. The morning omelet station had a frozen peas and carrots if you wanted something in your eggs. The liquor supply was a joke. The bartenders did not know how to make a shooter. The included booze was all the lowest quality. They had watery lemonade for a lime margarita, The strawberry daiquiri mix was pure sugar. No limes for a mojito's. The 24 hour snack shack had poutine on the menu but had no fries. When they did get the fries in finally they poured gravy into a bowl and added in under-cooked fries. The pizza was awful. We couldn't even finish one slice. Our experience at this resort was horrible. Would not recommend it to anyone. The best part of the entire week was leaving.
