TRYP by Wyndham Newark Downtown garners praise for its prime location, surrounded by Newark's dining, nightlife, and convenient transport options. While the modern ambiance and cleanliness of the hotel receive accolades, some guests highlight inconsistencies in service and room features like damaged furniture and missing blackout curtains. Opinions on value are mixed, with a few guests deeming dining and amenities as pricey. Despite this, the hotel's contemporary rooms and amenities like airport shuttles are appreciated, though the lack of certain in-room conveniences is noted.

I came from CT for a show at the Prudential Center. Desk staff was very friendly and efficient. My room was clean and spacious. The bathroom was also clean and large. If you're that picky about a small spot of chipped paint well there was that. The reason I only gave it a 4 rating was the restaurant. For afternoon/evening service I wouldn't necessarily put it in the gastropub category which is how it's advertised. But the $25 burger & fries were pretty good. The $18.50 breakfast buffet? I wish I had explored the area a little better because it turned out there was a Dunkin Donuts around the corner. I've stayed in hotels that charge about the same room rate with a much better buffet & it's included in your room price. The location is very convenient to both the PruCenter & Newark Penn Station. You can walk to both in a few minutes.

We called ahead and alerted the hotel that we would be checking in late and gave them a time. Nothing else was said except that they’d note it in our booking. We got there a few hours later (at midnight) only to be told when pulling into the lot that they had shut down a whole floor due to plumbing issues. We told him we would take any room he had. The guy asked what kind of booking we had and then called and told us since it was a prepaid res to go tell the front desk he sent us. We parked and went to the front desk where the same guy acted like we were crazy and told us we were supposed to go to the hotel out back. He hadn’t mentioned another hotel at all. So we went through the alley he told us to and found the sister hotel (Robert Treat BW) and we’re given a room that in no way compared to the room we had booked and paid for at Tryp. Things happen and I get that but they should have been calling people to let them know what happened. I would have rather been refunded and found different accommodations myself than to find out after a 12 hour drive that I don’t have a room and that the “comparable” room they had to offer was a closet sized room with a full size bed.

This hotel was great with great LED lighting inside the room, felt nice and bright. Location was great, only 10min walk to Newark penn station and then 25m with PATH train to world trade center. Several eateries with walking distance.

Had a nice overnight stay at this modern hotel. The room was contemporary and spotless, and the location is about a 10-minute walk from Newark Penn Station. They also have a complimentary shuttle to Newark Liberty Airport every hour on the hour.

Where to start……

Cons:
1. The front desk staff were unwelcoming to say the least. They could not be bothered for anything.

2. Basic amenities that are typical in any average hotel was not available. Example: you couldn’t purchase a soft drink. Water was not complimentary while waiting to check in. You can purchase a Deer Park water for $2 though.

3. Breakfast buffet, wasn’t much of a buffet at all. $18.50 +tax for bagels, very little fruit, runny eggs, undercooked bacon (thought I heard the pig snort it was so undercooked), oatmeal paste, and don’t try to eat there if you have food allergies. But it is all you can eat so that’s a plus.

4. The air draft from the bathroom moved the window blind and if you shut the door for any length of time the bathroom was so cold you need shoes and a jacket to be in there.

5. Shower handle was broken; cold was hot and hot was cold.

6. Only one elevator worked.

7. The cleaning staff was knocking on the fort three hours prior to checkout even with the Do Not Disturb sign on the handle. Double-checked to make sure it was still there after they left.

8. The stench of marijuana was overwhelming. I’m not sure if it is legal there or not, but if so, upgrades to the ventilation needs to occur

9. The manager couldn’t be bothered and relayed messages through the front desk staff.

10. The shuttle only runs once an hour on the hour, while other nearby hotels run every 15 minutes. But it is free.

Pros:

1. The bed was comfortable.

2. Good size room.

3. A half mile to Penn Station.

4. Close to Nike, Starbucks, and walking distance to local restaurants.

5. Felt safe in the hotel and neighborhood.

6. We were able to store our luggage there until check-in time.

7. Not a lot of noise when we stayed there.

8. Clean

Room was very nice and clean. The bed was super comfortable and easy to sleep on. The room also provided bottled waters, mini fridge, with coffee pods and a coffee maker. The bathroom had great lighting with different soaps and tissue. Great hotel I would recommend this to everyone.

During check in, the rep made it look like I didn't had money on my credit card because their machine wasn't accepting my chip. They don't allow swiping or contact-less tap. She made comments like "let me tell you the total that is being charged" etc like I wasn't aware of the cost before I booked. I was annoyed and told her that I have thousands of available balance on my credit card. I then offered to use a different card because I was fed up. She then offered to use the same card and typenit in manually but then make disrespectful comments. She was like, "if I do it manual, it would take the money one time, and I wouldn't have enough money for the weekend if I was depending on it ". I told her just do it so I can get out of there. This property needs to allow swiping or at least tap. Their reps shouldn't judge people thinking that they don't have enough money for a room. I recently went to nearby hotel and was able to check in using tap with the same credit card.

I had a reservation at the Wyndham. I called at 6:00 pm to let them know I would arrive after midnight. The person (Jaden) was very kind and said it was no problem, he would put an alert on the reservation and assign a room. I was delayed due to weather. I arrived at the airport and called the hotel at approximately 1:45. I was told I would miss the 2:00 am shuttle and would have to wait for the next one at 3:00 am. When I arrived at P4 the shuttle driver says there are no rooms available. He calls the same front desk person and that same person says “Yes, she has a reservation but since she didn’t check in by 11:00 pm we gave the room away!! 2:00 am and no place to go. The front desk person did not mention this when I called about the shuttle. The shuttle driver saw I was upset and was kind enough to call the manager at the Robert Tree who was able to provide me a room. I am not sure where the breakdown occurred but I did what I was expected to do by calling the location and making them aware I would arrive late. The front desk person had no apology and did not offer any possible solutions. Customer care at its worse. I have contacted corporate and am awaiting a response.

The first thing that turned me off was that the hotel had a restaurant but not room service. I was tired and just wanted to eat in my room. The room only had a shade and the street lights glared into the room; hence no black out curtains. The main light was so bright , I felt like I was in a college dorm or office building.
In the morning, 2 men were asleep in the lobby. There wasn’t anyone at the front desk and the workers at the hotel brushed it off or laughed. Also when I checked in, the front desk person said breakfast was aT 6:30 and when I want to eat, nothing was opened. They need to change this on hotels.com and the website And the snack section only had candy and nothing salty when I wanted to eat at night. I will never stay here again … just a terrible experience!!!!

I found this hotel to be modern, clean, comfortable, close to the transport system and moderately priced for NY. The hotel shuttle will pick you up from the airports, only 15 mins away. The desk agent Ocean Grant was helpful and gave good information. All good, I would highly recommend.
