Last November, my friends and I wanted to plan a girls trip. We had a lot of ideas about what we wanted to do, but after some conversation, we decided on a “dude” ranch. Although, we weren’t really into to a laid back kind of vacation. So upon searching for a “dude” ranch to visit, we made sure that it was a working “dude” ranch with lots of saddle time and things to do. After narrowing it down to 4 different ones, we settled on Klondike Ranch. I am glad to say it was the right choice!! Not only did we have lots of time in the saddle, but we spent the night at their “cow camp” up in the Big Horn Mountains, where we moved their herd of 200 pair (mom and calf) to another section of their land. We got to explore their grand property with its view for miles and miles! Richard and Patty were very accommodating with our stay in making sure our cabins had everything we needed, (including use of the hot tub). Their chef was incredible! He made 3 meals a day and you NEVER went hungry. Richard and Patty’s son John and granddaughter Kynzie were so incredibly helpful with making sure our saddles fit us correctly and that they were comfortable, as well as making sure the horse they paired us up with was the right fit. For me, I started on one horse day one and after riding that day, John noticed that we didn't really mend well, so he said that night that the following day I was going to try a different horse, and honestly it was the right call! The second horse I had was amazing and I felt so confident in what i was doing. They really do make sure that you are as comfortable as possible and pay attention to what you are doing to make sure you are as safe as can be.
The Klondike really makes you feel like part of their family and it is truly comforting. It is a trip I will never forget and definitely want to go back again!

What a week! Thanks to Mary and little man Ryken for picking us up from the airport and entertaining us on the way to the ranch. I had no idea how wonderful a week in the Wyoming cow land could be. Kensey, Ryan and Candace set us up for success by picking out the perfect horse and saddle for each of us. We had a full day of getting to know our horses and practicing our riding skills. While it was very warm in the valley, the mountains were cool and refreshing. Our cook, Natasha, kept us well fed- you will not likely lose any weight even though you are moving almost all the time. John, Candace and Bella kept us safe, educated and encouraged with gathering and pushing cows across valleys and mountains. The views were breath taking! If you had the fortune of going to camp as a kid, then you can understand the relationships that were formed - saying goodbye was hard. We even had a bonus of going to a local rodeo to watch Rich and Patty’s grandson ride a huge bull!! If you want a real cow wrangler experience, then Klondike Ranch is for you!

What a great vacation! I took my son and two grandkids, ages 18 and 16 to spend a week eating the best food, riding horses twice a day, and spending two days in the mountains herding lots and lots of cows while seeing the most beautiful scenery one could image. We came to the camp by way of Crazy Woman Canyon and loved the massive cliffs of rock. Perhaps the most fun was herding countless Angus cows through the woods like real cowgirls and cowboys. John Tass was the best trail guide and encouraged each of us to totally get involved. Each night I didn't expect to sit down to a gourmet dinner but glad it happened. The cabins were rustic and a bit warm but we didn't spend much time in the cabin. On Saturday we did go to the rodeo in Buffalo and had a great time.

We visited other ranches before and always loved the experience but this visit was very disappointing for all of us. They don't allow you to trot or canter on the trail rides. Even when you are an experienced rider. Only in the outdoor rink. But no activities or training offered in the Arena. The trail rides were mostly also just 1.5 hours long. One day was no riding at all. But there was nothing else to do beides leaving the ranch and explorier the area by ourselves. Not what we expected at all.

Don’t go to this ranch if you’re a novice rider.
The trails are challenging and there is little to no instruction. The wranglers are young immature girls. They care about the horses not so much about the guests. You’re on your own as far as horsemanship. We started with eight but ended with 2.
The landscape is spectacular, the cattle driving is thrilling. The food is great but accommodations are rough.

If you’re looking for a true authentic western experience on a working cattletanch .. this is the place to be!
You spend plenty of hours per day in the saddle! The horses are well trained and great working horses. During the cattle drives you can participate as actively as you want to. So the riding is amazing in a beautiful scenery! The Tass family welcome you to their home and tell you all about the history. Cabins are very nice!
The limited number of guests make this vacation extra special. Price - quality is very very good!

This was an amazing vacation. If you are looking for a true ranch experience this is the place. We rode horses every day and saw some of the most beautiful areas in Wyoming. The camping and cattle drives were the real deal. I felt like I was a part of the old west. The food was great and the atmosphere was authentic. You will not be disappointed. Highly recommend Klondike Ranch in Buffalo WY.

I stayed at Klondike Ranch in Septmeber 2003, me and two of my friend had the most amazing stay. Loved every scond of it. The Tass family, who are the oweners and have been for generations, are very welcoming and friendly, treat you as one of their own. The staff are wonderful and become friends. Would definatly reccomend this working ranch to anyone who doesn't mind mucking in and wants a true wyoming experience.

After researching numerous guest ranches over a 4-6 year period, we settled on the Klondike Ranch. This was our son’s dream trip for the celebration of his high school graduation that he had talked about since 6th or 7th grade.

After finding Klondike, we read the website from beginning to end, watched the videos, looked at the pictures, read the description of the rides, and decided, this was the one for us.

The beauty of the area, the quality of the horses, the delicious meals, and many of the things were exactly as described on the website. There were a few things that were either left unsaid or inaccurate.

First, when we arrived, we realized there is no AC in the cabin. Being from the Deep South, we thought this would be a problem, as we sleep at home with it very cool. We did discover, however, that while the cabin did get a bit stuffy in the daytime, the temperature cooled down to the 60s at night, so we were plenty comfortable. To provide that info on the website would be beneficial in helping other guests make their decisions.

One of the things that my son and I looked forward to was the long ride down the mountain from the upper pasture. The website states “We’ll trailer all of our guests who wish to participate, and their horses, about 25 miles towards camp, then ride horseback the 5 remaining miles into the camp... When we head off the mountain towards home, you’ll have the opportunity to make the trip horseback, down through Crazy Woman Canyon to the ranch, where you’ll get to experience even more amazing scenery and breathtaking views off the face of the mountain.”

When describing our upcoming adventure, this is one of the things that we would tell folks we were going to do. Imagine our dismay, when we mentioned it to the wranglers and they didn’t know what we were talking about. Later, we asked the cowboy, and he said that hadn’t been done for five years. This was a MAJOR disappointment to my son and me.

The only other complaint that I might mention ... and I’m somewhat hesitant to do so ... is the lack of hospitality the first few days. It seemed there was tension in the air (other guests felt it as well and it was discussed among us). Even the smallest requests were too often met with disgust or lecture. Thankfully, by the end of the week, things were better. I only wish we could have had the personal experiences others described. We identified more with the guy who wrote about being scolded for washing his hands in the kitchen. (I did send an email to the owners, and an apology was offered, this my hesitation to even mention it).

The mountains were beautiful. The horses were delightful. The rides were invigorating. The wranglers were helpful. The cook was friendly. The food was delicious. If the atmosphere in the house had been more welcoming and accommodating, it would have been the perfect trip. That feeling of being a nuisance (although we paid thousands to be there) caused us to be on edge much of the time.

Perhaps it was just a bad week for the family. People do have issues at times, and we like to give the benefit of the doubt.

Although so much was great about the trip, I cannot rate it a 5 because of the aforementioned problems. Although the hospitality was lacking, I cannot rate it a 1, because there were many wonderful experiences.

Therefore, I rate our experience a 3.

I only flew into Casper and then was picked up by the owner. I would suggest that you take the history tour with Patty into Buffalo and Sheridan. The Occidental Hotel in Buffalo is a fun time night out. They have a night that local musicians come in and Jam. In the mid 1980's I traveled in and around the Town of Cody. It has a great Historical Museum Center that is huge. In the summer there is a rodeo every night. Lots of western history in this area. I hope this helps you, and have a great time at the ranch.
