I didn't know that El Remate where Las Gardinas is located is 20 minutes from the airport and Flores. My plane arrived Sunday night and there were about 5 cab drivers waiting outside the airport. I usually look for someone relaxed with a friendly face but only saw people swarming me. I went back inside to consider possibilities and then decided to try one of the drivers. He asked for 350 Quetzales which is a LOT of money in Guatemala, $47. That sounded insane so I went back into the airport and asked around. It's 10 Q to get to Flores, which is by the airport. The cab driver followed me in to the airport which I didn't like because it felt aggressive, and offered to do it for 250. I said no. While I was asking around and looking into hiring a friend of someone who worked in the cafe another cab driver followed me and said he'd do it for 200 Q. But it's not fun to be in a strange town, at night, the internet said there can be car jackings at night on that road, to see no friendly cab drivers and the cab drivers than leaving for the night, and not know anything about costs, taxis, safety, etc. The cab driver turned out to be nice and it was fine. But I wanted other people to have a head's up where Remate is. I liked Remate though. It's has a beautiful lake, you can rent a horse or motorcycle or canoe, and it's between the airport and Tikal.

The bus picked me up for taking me to Mexico at the hotel in El Remate, but some buses only go from Flores. This is very important because you'd either need a cab to go to Flores, hope for a collectivo which may or may not work early, or get a hotel in Flores the night before your bus trip.

The hotel is nice but a little loud with street traffic. But the staff is nice and they put a lot of care into the hotel. They do a good job of having a nice, reasonably priced hotel. The room smelled neutral which I like, neither like mold or bug spray, or like air freshener. There were two windows which provided cross flow of air. There are plants on the property. You can buy vegetables and fruits down the street. Las Orquideas and two from the top five are right there 13Ahaw and la Pizza (but it's a small town with only a handful of restaurants). I got a fine eggs, beans, tortillas for 25 Q at the Las Gardinas restaurant.

Also, the wifi is out a LOT. They have a very limited amount of wifi and when it's done there's no more. It can go very fast. There was one day I went in 5 times and it was out the whole day. I wasn't able to book a hotel for the next day when I was leaving and had to drive around in a taxi looking for a hotel, which sucked. I read about that but figured I could work around it, but I was very wrong. It really, really sucked to show up in my next town and not have a hotel and no wifi to look for one.

Thank you for your review. We apologize for the internet, but it is an issue that is beyond of our control, we do want to provide a better internet service but due to our rural setting the internet provider does not provide any system. We are working on it. We appreciate your patience. Regarding to your comment about the taxi and how to get to El Remate, we do provide information when the customer ask for it, or even we could arrange a hotel pick up for Q.190.00. from the airport to our hotel. Thank you!

Everything is great in this comfortable Hotel. Rooms are big enough and always clean and fresh thanks to its air conditioning system, necessary for Peten's heat, a feature you will love specially if you come from Europe! I should recommend the food from the restaurant!! quite delicious and its menu has a wide variety available.

The first time I was there on a business trip and they treated us (a party of 20) with the best service! the second time I went by myself and the service was even greater.

I recommend "Las Gardenias" for backpackers or small groups or research teams that need a cool place to relax after a hard day's work.

It is close to Tikal, Uaxactun and Yaxha, some of the most impressive Maya sites of Peten and that is something that for me, as an Archaeologist, is a fantastic feature.

Cheers to the staff for all the good advice about tourist spots.

Douglas.

I made a trip advisor account specifically to give a review of this place. The people of not only Las Gardenias, but El Ramate in general are incredible.

First things first, if you are coming to the area for a tour of Tikal, stay in El Ramate, it's closer to Tikal and so beautiful.

Secondly, on your way here, if a man gets on your bus speaking English taking you to the tourist office, say no thank you and continue on. DO NOT PURCHASE ANYTHING FROM HIM OR THE SAN JUAN/GRAN JAGUAR COMPANY

OK. On to the hotel. Amazing. The rooms are nice and cool with a hammock outside. the convenience store and restaurant next door are linked with the hotel and everyone is incredibly nice.

After we purchased a bus ticket to Antigua with San Juan, they informed us a shuttle would pick us up at our hotel at 6:30. The shuttle never showed up, so the amazing people at Las Gardenias got us a collective at 7:30pm on a Sunday.

Turns out the money we paid for our bus tickets had not been paid to the bus company. We returned to the hotel because we had booked a second night by chance and could not cancel.

The hotel kept the convenience store open so we could grab something to eat and even though the front desk was closed they got us the key for our room back.

They told us that if talking to the company didn't work out in the morning they would call the office in Flores for us and help us out.

All in all, a lovely hotel with a view of the lake, clean rooms and comfortable beds that goes above and beyond for it's guests. Thank you Las Gardenias.

Las Gardenias is by far the best place we stayed during our tour of Central America! The rooms were a great price and very clean, the beds were comfy, the staff was nothing short of wonderful, and the scenery is amazing! The attached restaurant serves delicious Latin food (among other types of food) and the service there is great as well. Our last morning, our ride was leaving 2 hours before the restaurant even opened, and without hesitation, the owner was up cooking us a delicious breakfast in her pajamas!
It's also very quiet and is across the street from a gorgeous lake that's great for swimming. I recommend Las Gardenias for anyone traveling to Tikal!!!

We have a lunch of the day there which is good and cheap even if there were not enough chicken according to us.
As we love the place, the good was nice and the price ok, we decided to come back for a good breakfast.
Despite the food which were still good, I've to say that we've been a bit disapointed by few things:
- I order fried eggs and got them scrambled: no big deal
- a tea was included on the breakfast offer. For the bill, it was charged as apparently on the list the waitress proposed us, we chose the only one which was not included. We explained that the waitress didn't tell us and have to specify it. So they finally didn't charge us the tea.
- we asked for wii fii access. They asked us it'll be charged 35Q. I'm not really a big fan of such places (which are more and more) who charge for wii fi but usually the rate is 1$ around 8Q, 35Q was more than we paid for one breakfeast: the price was insane! We didn't take it.
- check carefully the bill and the change as she didn't give me back the right amount. On 30Q she get back 25Q

Anyway, nice place, nice food but we have a strange feeling to be considered as silly, stupid gringos who can be fool easily.
Not really liked that

Our room looked clean when we first arrived but were in for a gross treat later. There were 3 beds in the room and one room had ants on it (not a big deal normally, But there were a ton!) We were happy they had ac and legit hot showers (not suicde showers), but that is where the good ends.

After our trip to tikal we came back to the hotel that still did not have internet, but could run my credit card? The receptionist was useless as recommendations, shuttles, and where to find internet. When we woke up on the day we were leaving there were cockroaches in the room!!

This is where I draw the line. We were so disgusted that we sat outside an hour before our shuttle arrived just to get out of the room.

Also, "garden view rooms" don't exist. There is no garden.

We spent one night at Las Gardenias before heading on the morning tour of Tikal. The room was clean and comfortable with hot showers and hammocks outside. The stay also included one hour of internet time on the computers in the lobby. The restaurant was convenient, reasonably priced and had a nice view of the sunset. The staff were helpful in helping us book our tour and allowed us to store our bags until we returned.

We had one small incident that marred our stay. Early in the morning before waking up for our tour, we thought we heard someone in the next room showering. When our alarm went off we discovered the water supply line to the toilet had broken and flooded the whole room. Our fully packed bags were completely soaked.

The water was clean so we laughed it off, set our bags aside to dry and enjoyed a wonderful day in Tikal.

My husband and I stayed here for two nights. The hotel was great about setting up airport pick-up from Flores, arranging a taxi to and from Tikal, and helping us get a shuttle to Belize the next morning. The staff was friendly and helpful. The rooms were spacious (we had three double beds for just the two of us) and the price was great: $20 USD for a room with a private bathroom and A/C. We did have a problem with bugs (ants) in our first room, but the staff was quick to move us to another room.

The town itself was really nice, with several options for eating and drinking. The restaurant at Las Gardenias was great, too - good prices and a great spot for watching the sun set over the lake.

Hotel Las Gardenias, in the small town of El Remate on the main road to Tikal was a great place to stay for two reasons.

1. We didn't have a lot of time to spend in the Peten, so we didn't want to waste time running back and forth from Flores. El Remate allowed us to connect with the sunrise tours to Tikal on their way from Flores (a little bit of extra sleep for us), and still get back to Belize in the afternoon that day.

2. The family who run the place are very friendly, and tried really hard to accommodate our needs. The teenage daughter who sat at the main desk didn't speak English, or at least not enough to deal with my rather complicated questions about the sunrise tour, but luckily I spoke enough Spanish to be comprehensible. We put the 6 of us in a single room, 2 to a bed (queen/double sized). The room had A/C (500Q per night, I think) but we got a discounted rate for using a "ventilador" (fan) instead. So, for the 6 of us, it was 300 quetzales per night, or $43, about $7 each. The bathroom was beautifully clean, and had the fun insta-hot shower heater. (Make sure to ask how to use one if you never have, because they can burn out if not used correctly).

We ate at the restaurant for dinner that night, as did several local families.

Our only problem was trying to get out in the morning to do the sunrise tour itself. We woke up and were ready to go by 4 am, tickets in hand (actually a receipt), and the gates to the hotel were locked. There was no way out, so we had to be creative. I'll leave the creativity to your imagination. It would probably be more helpful to have arranged with the family to make sure there was a way out the night before!

They kept our luggage in the room for us, so we checked out at 12 when we returned from our lovely sunrise tour. We used their fast internet connection to communicate with people from home and shopped in the local stores (better prices that Tikal, definitely), and walked to the crossroads to catch a collectivo for the Belize border. (Trying to save $ from the tourist busses that charge $20+ for the ride to the border, but the collectivo was more packed than normal, because we caught it at the same time as the students from the local secondary school).

ONE CAVEAT: Las Gardenias was our first choice hotel, but they were not responsive to our e-mails about booking. I am not sure why, but since El Remate is pretty much a quiet village of many hotels, it may be because there is always space. Our sunrise tour guide was building another hotel across the street from Las Gardenias (on the lake side), and the expensive hostel Don Carlos was just down the way. There were more posh places too, but certainly there weren't many people around, even for what is described as the high season. I wouldn't worry about just showing up, and looking in. We arrived at 5:30pm, and were the only people in the hotel that night.

I have not traveled extensively, but this was my favorite hotel I have ever stayed at. It is nestled in the village of El Remate along the main road to Tikal. The rooms are arrayed around a central courtyard, with a few more rooms in the rear. The room itself was small, but well appointed, and perfect for my needs. It was clean, with fresh linens, and featured aircon and hot water. The main building features a convenience store and ice cream shop on the ground floor and with a restaurant above. The restaurant is the gem of Las Gardenias in my opinion and I spent a lot of time there eating, drinking coffee, and just sitting: enjoying the spectacular view of the lake and chatting with my friendly waiter, Bagner. WiFi is available for your phone and computer, which I was grateful for. The food was excellent. Almost everything I tried off the menu was absolutamente delicioso: great coffee, homemade tortillas, fresh fried plantains, and the best avocados I have ever had in my life. The only thing I don't recommend is the cheeseburger, which was just OK, but you're in Guatemala, what are you doing eating cheeseburgers!?

The staff also was amazing and very friendly. They are professionals in hospitality, and I could not have felt more welcome. La empresaria, Magda, works very hard to take excellent care of her guests and is generally just a very wonderful person. Although this was my first trip to Guatemala, I absolutely want to go back and I hope this time I can bring my daughter to see this little jewel and experience it for herself as well.
