Cozy, quaint, and comfy

Reviewed Dec 7, 2017
On the main road, convenient to shops and restaurants this little hotel is snuggled inside a garden with airy patios (complete with hammocks). The rooms are basic, but clean and comfortable. The restaurant bends over backwards to accommodate guests - Eduardo was our favorite - he practiced his English and helped us with Spanish. The front desk folks are super helpful and friendly - when we were temporarily stranded, they worked to find us space for a couple more days.

Room Tip: The second story rooms in the back are very quiet and a touch more modern.

After a long day in Yaxha, my friends and I were looking for a place where we could try the 'Pescado Blanco'. Some people recommended 'el Muelle' but other recommended 'Las Gardenias' and a cheaper, more local alternative. Boy they were right. The food was amazing. We had a 120Q whole white fished, sauteed, with 'Hojas de Santa Maria'. The fish was cooked perfectly - it tasted like snapper. The garlic sauce and the Santa Maria leaves where also lovely. The licuados and the other side dishes were also quite tasty.

Room was clean. Good breakfast. The restaurant has a nice view on the lake. The location is perfect for visiting Tikal. The air conditioning is a real plus! I read before that there is a lot of noise of the busy road to Tikal, but that is not correct. The road isn't that busy and in our room we didn't hear cars pass...

Thanks for your review Kate!
The road is not as busy as some noise- sensible guests would be. We also have some signs in order to reduce the noise to a minimun on specific time during the day. We are glad you enjoyed your stay!

We stayed in this hotel for one night on our way to Tikal. It is located on the road to Tikal in the small town of El Remate which is about 30min from the 1st entrance gate of Tikal. The hotel is also a travel agency and as such they offer organized tours to Tikal. The hotel has a restaurant that accepts credit cards at no extra charge which we appreciated because we were running low on Quetzales. Breakfast was included in our rate and served in the restaurant. The included free breakfast consists of 1 cup of tea or coffee and one of the breakfast dishes on the menu that are priced at Q30 or below per person. The breakfast tasted very good and the amount was appropriate.
Our room was room 10 which is on the second floor. To reach it you go through a nice garden with tropical trees and carry your luggage up to the 2nd floor. The room was clean, but not much bigger than the 2 beds in it. There were 2 windows, a quiet and efficient A/C and a flat screen TV mounted to the wall. The bathroom had a good size and a nice shower. Complimentary soap and liquid hand soap were provided. There was only 1 large towel when we arrived but that was quickly remedied by the hotel.
There is only space for 3 cars on the premises, which was sufficient when we were there. The restaurant staff spoke some English and the receptionists spoke very good English.
Long story short: This is a nice, clean and affordable hotel which lies within 30min of the first entrance gate of Tikal. Everyone who plans to experience sunset or sunrise at Tikal and self-drive to Tikal should be warned, there will be plenty of people (often dressed in dark clothes) walking or riding unlighted bicycles on the streets after dark and there will be the occasional animal on the road. You may only see them when you are a few feet away and thus driving at night can be real dangerous.

Everything is great in this comfortable Hotel. Rooms are big enough and always clean and fresh thanks to its air conditioning system, necessary for Peten's heat, a feature you will love specially if you come from Europe! I should recommend the food from the restaurant!! quite delicious and its menu has a wide variety available.

The first time I was there on a business trip and they treated us (a party of 20) with the best service! the second time I went by myself and the service was even greater.

I recommend "Las Gardenias" for backpackers or small groups or research teams that need a cool place to relax after a hard day's work.

It is close to Tikal, Uaxactun and Yaxha, some of the most impressive Maya sites of Peten and that is something that for me, as an Archaeologist, is a fantastic feature.

Cheers to the staff for all the good advice about tourist spots.

Douglas.

Room tip: Rooms on the back side of the hotel are very quiet, in front of a relaxing patio.
