Please get a rental car as soon as you book. They book out at 1-2 months at the time of writing this. Turo is a great resource in addition to the usual places.
We did a helicopter tour with Jack Harter and I can not say enough great things! If this is the one thing you do, do it!! We also did the Smith Family Luau and loved it! Food was amazing, show great and price right! We did a snorkel trip with Kauai snorkel tours and it was great too! We also did the secret falls hike and I would not try this unless you have tennis shoes or Teva's. It was so muddy that doing the trail in plain flip flops was a little miserable.
We drove over to multiple waterfalls and beaches and it was wonderful! We went to anihi beach and our kids saw a turtle while swimming! Kauai.com is a great resource.
Walgreens ID Now test is the way to go! Free test and we had results in a few hours time. Tests need to be done 72 hours before the flight from mainland to the island.
You will love Kauai! Feel free to message me if you have specific questions!
Our unit was perfect for us! It was updated nicely and clean. I found the staff that we did interact with to be very professional and friendly.
This resort is in a great location. If you are debating which side of the island to stay on and you don't have a couple of weeks to split between the north and south side, just stay here. The island is not that big and roads can get busy, but this is still a good spot to do day trips to both sides of the island.
The Safeway closest to the resort is just okay (works in a pinch or if you are exhausted when you get there). The nicer one is in Lihue (by Costco, Costco if you have a card is also an excellent grocery option, but be prepared to wait in line for gas there). I recommend going to Lihue to shop (but again you are close for last minute things, it's just not stocked that well).
The pool is awesome. My kids loved it. The beach is not the best on the island, but it is nice and so cool to be able to walk over at anytime. We did spend time in the water (ocean) right at the resort and also lots of sand if your kids love to play in it.
Check in went relatively smoothly and the receptionist (Lani?) turned out to be super helpful (and friendly) throughout my stay. The concierge (Karen?) was also charming. In general the facility and grounds were well kept and the location of the resort is convenient. It is right across from a small shopping area with a Safeway and some shops - and a good cafe (Coconut's Fish Cafe). You can also jump on the bike path and enjoy a beautiful ride or walk up the coast. The hotel beach was was pretty (pic uploaded). I wasn't too crazy about the pool because it seemed to be geared to kids and parents. I went down to cool off after a hike and felt awkward standing around surrounded by toddlers and attending adults. Nonetheless it would be a great pool if you were a kid. There were nice lounging areas though if you just wanted to sit outside The air conditioned gym was a big plus with some good equipment. Renting a beach cruiser or snorkeling equipment is reasonable and easy to do.
My only real reservation was the combination of the resort fee ($26 a day plus tax) and the cleaning charge ($229 plus tax - only cleaned on departure). AA disclosed the add on charges so I guess I was in denial about what they would add up to but being charged an extra $426 on arrival was disconcerting. Resort fees/add ons are definitely becoming "a thing" and I need to start being better about factoring the extras into the quoted cost of the vacation.
Anyway, I could see how this would be a good place for a family and I had a good experience overall. Kauai, of course, is extraordinary.
We love this location, this community (we lived here for two years and visit yearly and love the grounds, and beach.
This particular unit D-302 was the most expensive we have ever rented there. The pluses: the view was great, the front staff was wonderful and helpful, the a/c was great, it was quiet.
The negatives: the condo is getting old and worn. The condo had very limited utensils, bowls, no pitcher, limited cooking pans. The sofa and sofa mattress were sad, ancient and worn. There used to be ceiling fans in the bedroom and there used to be one in D-302 as the spot for it remained but.
All the appliances worked well and the place was clean.
The bed was oddly made with what appeared tp be short sheets and no fitted sheets so they came off every night. To be clear since this was a condo we did not expect service but this is the way it came and it was strange.
Now if this was a cheaper place to stay then this would have been a sacrifice for price but this was several hundred dollars per day so...
One more issue: The condos used to have a cooler, some boogie boards, beach matts for people to use. No more. You can rent very used boogie boards for ten bucks a day. You can also rent the most rusted old single speeds bikes for 20 dollars for three hours. Go to a bike rental shop and get one that works and with an oiled chain.,
I digress.
I look forward to returning to this place but also look forward to some upgraded fixtures.
More pluses-the pool is awesome, the grills are spotless, are beautiful and the staff sublime.
