Whilst our receptionist was friendly and welcoming, our check-in experience here was very poor. The 2 rooms we booked could not be found and the receptionist was just about to give up and tell us we’d no booking, when suddenly she asked if we were booked through a travel agent. The rooms were then identified (we were given the nos) and we were able to get early access to one of them and keys for the other could be collected later.
So much for Ocean View – we were sent to the side view, last room at the very back of the hotel for the first room. The room was clean, but dated. Our lift experience was interesting – the lift only works for 2 people and is a manual one (we’d to be shown how to use it!!).
On returning to reception later for the other key, a different receptionist was more bothered about eating her dinner at the front desk than she was at getting that check-in completed. (We have never seen a receptionist eating at reception before, never mind one sitting with a full dinner plate of food!!). Even though we gave the Room No, she again couldn’t find any record of us, and even though we explained our earlier difficulty at check-in, it took time to get that room key off her – again mentioning the Jonview travel agent booking!! That second room, still up the back and side of the building had been upgraded and was much more in line with what we’d expect.
Having read previous reviews on the hotel restaurant, we opted to dine elsewhere – highly recommend Earle’s (dinner) and Sunset Café (breakfast).
Unfortunately there was a powercut across all Rocky Harbour and beyond that evening, that lasted a couple of hours. Totally accept these things can happen. However, when I approached reception via emergency corridor lighting for an update/torch, there was nothing available. No update was supplied during/post that blackout by the hotel.

The hotel room and the view were quite nice
Front desk service was terrible. Everything was an imposition. I often ask myself why someone like that would want to have a client facing position.
The food at dinner in the restaurant was good, but the service was slow. We thought that there was a shift change and no one was serving. Finally our waitress appeared.
The location was perfect if you wanted to attempt the hike to the top of Gross Morne Mountain

While travelling in Gros Morne National Park we stayed at the Ocean View Hotel in Rocky Harbour for 3 nights. We stayed in the newer annex beside the main hotel. Our room was clean and spacious primarily because it was designed for wheelchair access. Nice little patio to sit and watch a beautiful sunset. All in all a great place to stay. Great bar attached to the hotel with terrific entertainment and fun waitresses. The only issue we had was with the more formal dining room. Apparently the hotel was closed for 2 years during Covid; however, this dining room is incredibly musty smelling. While it looks very clean, there is definitely a mold issue, and as the dining room is pricey, the smell needs to addressed. The dining room is part of the main hotel, and if you are at all sensitive to mold and mildew smell and/or presence, I fear the rooms in this area may have the same problem.

We booked two nights in the new building. Our room had a very comfortable king sized bed, spacious modern bathroom with large tiled shower, thick cozy towels, small table with chairs and a desk with office chair. There was also a microwave and Keurig machine with tea and coffee pods provided. The deck had two chairs and a table with a great view of the ocean and sun setting behind the lighthouse! The only downside was that the door to the patio locks when you pull it closed, so you need to be sure you have your key with you when you go out there. We had to cancel our second night and they did that with no hesitancy or fee. We also ate the restaurant...good choices on the menu and a lots of selections on the wine list. Our meal was tasty and service was great, plus we had a great view of the ocean.

I recommend staying in Woody Point while exploring the south side of Bonne Bay which includes the Tablelands, the Discovery Centre and many excellent hiking trails. Once you've spent a few days in that part of Gros Morne you should relocate to the north side of Bonne Bay where you'll find the communities of Rocky Harbour and Norris Point. There are quite a few more accommodation choices on this side of the bay. Our favourite is the Ocean View Hotel in Rocky Harbour. It has a great location right on Rocky Harbour with balconies or patios with every room. It's also got a great feel to it that is created by the many pieces of art work that adorn its walls. Throughout the common areas you will find folk art pieces by Port aux Choix resident Ben Ploughman which are for sale. They absolutely add something special to this place.

The rooms are spacious and the bathrooms in the suites very large with both a jacuzzi and a shower.

In addition to the art work, the Ocean View Hotel is one of the best places in western Newfoundland to attend a kitchen party. This is a celebration of Newfoundland music and story telling that no one who visits the Rock should miss. The Anchor Pub is the ideal place to do this and you can get screeched in here too! Lastly, the Oceans Room is one of the best places to eat in the Gros Morne area.

Unlike a previous reviewer we had no problem with the wifi.

Please note: this is not a review of this hotel, which was excellent.

This is a review of the hotel’s restaurant.

When we arrived at the restaurant for dinner we were greeted by a very abrupt hostess, who asked if we had a reservation, even though the restaurant appeared to be less than 20% occupied.

She begrudgingly suggested that she would find us a table but said sternly that in future to ALWAYS make a reservation prior to coming to THIS restaurant.

Unfortunately this set the tone for an uncomfortable evening. We regretted our decision to not seek alternative dining options after the greeting.

The meal was adequate, but possibly overpriced for the quality of food.

All in all a disappointing experience, especially considering the warm feeling given to us earlier in the day by hotel reception.

My impression; this is a Motel, not Hotel. We paid for an Ocean View room and did get one on the 1st floor with a door to the parking lot (Ocean), but the room carpet was very old & worn, the smell of the room very mildewy, the bed sheets looked clean - but old, stains on the bed ruffle, furniture dinged/scuffed, the bathroom had a couple upgrades - like the sink - but the rest was circa 1960's. We had dinner at he upstairs restaurant, which was OK but not worth the stay at this hotel. Sadly, if you want to visit this beautiful cove, there are limited choices for accommodations, which is likely why this location can charge what they do for an Ocean View room that is so old & smelly.

The location of the restaurant is stunning but the experience was terrible. We walked to the restaurant to make a reservation and was welcomed at the desk by someone who clearly did not like their job. The dining room overlooked the water but the windows were covered. Yes, an ocean view restaurant but no view of the ocean. My sister ordered gluten free bread which came toasted on a plate that was dropped on the table. We ordered a beet salad and seafood linguini. The beet salad was topped with goat cheese that you had to hunt for but covered with a full jar of pickled onions. Who puts tomatoes on a beet salad? The seafood linguini had a smattering of salad shrimp most likely from a can and two or three of the smallest scallops I have ever seen. The meal was expensive but the food was cheap. I highly recommend leaving this restaurant off you list.

I never write reviews, but I have to say something about this wonderful place. I just travelled to RH with a u11 hockey team. 16 kids, 30 parents. Another hockey team stayed there at the same time for a weekend tournament. For most hotels, this is a nightmare. But these dear people made this the best hotel stay I've had in 13 years of travelling with hockey teams. Oh you want a team supper? We'll open our closed for the season restaurant and time it so the food is hot and ready to serve when your kids get off the ice. Kids want to play? Here's a conference room they can use all weekend, no charge. The adults want to hang out after curfew? We'll call in our sound guy to set up so your resident guitar guy can play tunes for everyone. Oh your schedule changed and now you have an 8:00 game an hour away? Our kitchen staff will start the complimentary breakfast at 530 instead of 700 so the kids can eat.

Friends, Rocky Harbour is beautiful. But if you want to see the best NL has to offer, you look to the people. And there are none finer - no greater example of Newfoundland hospitality - and no where better to stay than this hotel. 10/10? No. Better.

We only visited the restaurant and didn't stay at the hotel!

See if you can sit on the second floor area for a great view of Rocky Harbour.

Be sure to order the Fish & Chips and then marvel as you wonder (aloud) if they caught it this morning or just before you arrived. It is cooked well, lightly battered, served with coleslaw (if I remember correctly).

You will think the 1 piece is enough and you're right but you'll regret not getting 2 pieces!!
