Detailed Reviews
We (two couples) opted for a two-queen bed room to save costs on a Wednesday and Thursday nights’ stay. Because the least expensive of the rooms with this configuration indicated it was over the kitchen, we opted for the next choice. It turns out it was over the pub, but nary a word on the website about this, nor when I talked with the receptionist before booking. As it turns out, this was no problem the first night, but we were essentially in the pub from 7 pm to 11 pm, when the music stopped. It was good music, but as we wanted to go to bed a bit earlier, it was not appreciated. Make sure you stay in the other wing, which is presumably not over anything noisy.
Aside from that, the room was fine, if cramped for 4 adults, each with their own suitcase. The bathroom with this room was tiny, but adequate. The beds were comfy, the staff and the main restaurant were lovely. There was a lovely big deck with chairs to sit out of an evening.
The lodge provides bottled water in any quantity you request, since it has a boiled water advisory. Awkward for tooth-brushing, but otherwise fine. The pub is very popular and was hopping all evening both evenings we were there.

We stayed in one of the cabins and could see the beach from our main window. There's a lot of beautiful, walkable beach near the lodge. It was very clean when we arrived and had a good number of kitchen basics. There is a boil water notice, but the staff brought us plenty of water bottles so it wasn't an issue. One morning, our car needed a jump and front desk staff immediately came to help us. It was so appreciated and just above and beyond. We went to the restaurant a few times and really enjoyed it, especially the creme brulee. Would definitely stay again sometime :)

Getting staff, especially on a small island, is not easy. So there have been ups and downs for The Surf, in the kitchen as well as in front of house. However, it still is a lovely place to for a drink and a meal. Our last visit was a week ago and very pleasant. The pint of Pilsner was fresh and the seafood chowder delicious. In my opinion it doesn't need the smoked salmon, but aside from that, it was one of the best chowders I have had lately. The picture says it all.

I was very disappointed with the service at the lodge. The rooms were not cleaned daily due to “Covid”, their reason( with the reduced service they should have had a reduced rate but charged full rate). They had a process implemented set dirty towels, garbage outside your door and they would restock. Bottle water was supplied, since there was a boil water order in effect.
The room was very hot, no air conditioner. Room was showing its age. The restaurant was not open for breakfast. For the reduced service and condition of the room, I don’t recommend this place as value for the dollar.
We attended a wedding on the island and compared accommodations with other guests. Their accommodations had full service, the accommodations were in better condition and a lot less $.
One positive is, the Inn rooms had a view of the ocean even if you had to stand up to see it out the window.
The cabins I saw had no view of the ocean.
Very disappoint!

I've just been to the Surf Lodge for lunch with some friends. Poor service from inexperienced staff (no manager on site on Sundays, it seems), Bland, over-priced food, No apologies for either the long wait or the mix ups in the orders. I gather they've had a high turnover recently, but no excuse for leaving serving staff who were clearly out of their depth without proper oversight and support. Will not be going back any time soon.

Don’t waste your money on this overpriced horrible food. Service was the worst we’ve experienced in many years. Pub was 3/4 empty during our visit but it took staff 20 minutes to greet us and take our drink order. Thankfully we ordered our food at the same time. It took nearly 30 minutes for our wine to arrive, and another 45 minutes for our food to arrive…they had a reduced, very basic menu so it should not have taken so long. The food tasted old and ie: Poutine… fries tasted stale and were not crisp, the small portion of gravy was thick and gloopy, and the cheese curds were cold and rubbery. Do yourself a favour and pack a lovely picnic rather than waste your valuable time and money on this terrible pub grub.

I phoned in to ask about accommodation and the person had to put me on hold because they weren't sure what was available. That person seemed rushed and uninterested in my call. I called back about 15 minutes later and a different person answered They said they had no time to talk about accommodation and suggested I call back the next day. This was terrible service and I would not be interested in staying at this place.

We were disappointed with our luncheon experience at this interesting eclectic old fashion seaside simple restaurant. The staff was very friendly but slow. We ordered fish and chips. The fish was very heavy beer battered and soaked with grease, The batter and fish grossly overdone. Ditto for the chips, soggy and poorly done. Local beer was served. We did not stay at the lodge. Parking is ample.

This was our first dinner out after the pandemic started and we decided to go to the Surf Lodge. Our reserved table was in a corner with a perfect view over the Georgia Strait. My dinner companion had the crispy chicken burger with a salad, I had the calamari with a separate order of yam fries. The calamari were cooked to perfection, the yam fries fantastic. The crispy chicken was equally good, as was the salad.
We enjoyed the view and the friendly service. Will be back soon.

We stayed at the lodge for 2 nights. Had a cabin type Queen bedroom. It was nice because it was out in the back of lodge. Had a semi oceanfront view. The cabin is a little worn but was clean. It had a kitchen / front room, bedroom and washroom with a bath. (which did not have a plug) There was a tv in the living room but did not have cable. So be sure to bring a streaming device , ruku or other, If you want to watch tv.
We had a little balcony to sit out on , which was nice. But that was where the employees of the lodge and guests smoked and where the parking lot is. So its good and bad.
Restaurant - My husband made a reservation for the Surf lodge restaurant . We arrived and they sat us at a table that was not reserved. We mentioned that and they said it was reserved for other people? So we did not get the table that we had a reservation for, which was a window view.
The menu does not have many options for food on it. Very basic dishes. Not as good as it use to be, but as every other restaurant business , they have problems getting food there to serve.
The location of the lodge is really close to the ocean which is great. Right across the street.
So they both have their good points and not so good points.

I love the rustic log structure, views and the laidback atmosphere everybody I met from staff, locals and other visitors all where very accommodating and friendly.
I’ll be back every year.
Dining room was lovely for those special meals and the pub was fun and inviting.
