I gave this long weekend to my family as a christmas present because I believe in giving memories not stuff....we travel first class a lot and this resort created an experience that we will not forget for a very long time...in fact next year we are going back again I hope! It is pricey but well worth it....you cannot take your money with you and this is an amazing way to enjoy it! Luxury Camping does not really give the accommodation justice but that is what it was....antique furnishings and outdoor showers in a tent....very cool....five star cuisine with wine pairings....you could roll up to the bar anytime and get an amazing meal.....the activities are what thrilled my 14 year old...horseback riding in the forest, fishing, whale watching, bear watching...from 10 feet away! To paint ball, rifle range, painting lessons, and a great spa to name a few things we did together....

Just go and thank me later
Cheers
Cheryl

Clayoquot Wilderness Resort is located in the midst of an amazing biosphere on the Pacific coast of Vancouver Island. Set in a temperate rain forest, this resort is open from late May through mid-September. John, Adele and their staff are always up for an adventure and do there best to be sure that you have whatever experiences you are up for. The only drawback, and it is a major drawback, are the guest accomodations. The guest rooms are twenty individual tents. All of the guests who were there with us had, as we had, expected the tents to be of the type you would stay in on an African safari (ie, with shower, toilet and sink in each tent). The toilets at Clayoquot are composting toilets situated in out houseses located near the tent. The sinks and showers are located in a central building which is exposed to the elements (which can be harsh in the early morning and late evening hours). The bath house is located a long walk from the tents and is shared with other guests. All and all we loved our time at Clayoquot, but we would be reluctant to recommend it to others because of the toilet/bathroom facility issues. Clayoquot has the potential to be a truly amazing, world class resort. If they will invest the capital necessary to address these issues, then it will be a one-of-a-kind destination resort.

Hi there, I wanted to take the time to personally reach out to you and say thank you for your review and for your words about your stay here with us. We listened. Others guests had similar thoughts about the composting toilets and up until last year we did not have the technology to safely protect the delicate environment where our tents are situated. We found the technology and have made the improvements to a huge success! Now 12 out of our 24 tents have luxury en suite bathrooms with heated floors and flush toilets included! It would be fabulous to welcome you back to Clayoquot for another great wilderness experience! All the best, The entire Clayoquot team.

This was a 1 week trip rescheduled post the new management (we visited in July 2017, there's no option to choose this far back in the review,so full disclosure)

It's an incredible place but the best bits for us were
1) Seamless and professional organization from arrival to departure and in-between
2) Excellent food with skilled chefs who can create amazing things which cater to probably any dietary restriction (e.g. egg-free baking)
3) You can do whatever you want at whatever pace - we went on a pretty demanding hike, spent another day hanging out on a boat
4) They have the "communal but private" balance right. We traveled as a couple and didn't necessarily want to be surrounded by other people's kids at mealtimes or on activities. They get this, even if some parents do not :-)
5) Accommodation was luxurious, outdoor showers were lovely but don't hang around out there if you're attractive to mosquitoes

All the guides were fun and highly trained.

Cell is non-existent and wifi was spotty, it didn't bother me but may be an issue if you're expecting to stay "plugged in" (to work) whilst here.

Dear Joanna W, Thank you so much for taking the time to submit a review, it really means the world to our team, and to hear what you specifically found wonderful is extremely helpful to us. The comment about "communal but private" balance is great to hear. The dynamic of each set of our guests is unique and we are conscious of creating the experience they envisioned for their trip. Anything we can do to accommodate that is our number one priority. And thank you for mentioning our flexibility - this is a vacation after all, and we always want our guests to feel relaxed and able to enjoy the resort at their own pace. Again, thank you for this review, and I hope we will see you back in the Bedwell soon! Sincerely, Rosalyn Young Marketing Manager

Could talk for ages about the wonders of this place, everything from the food to the staff is exceptional. Nothing is too much to ask here and the tailored experience is what makes it so special. It really is an escape and left us feeling quite emotional to be leaving and returning to 'reality'. Each day they arrange an adventure-packed schedule based on what it is you've asked to do and the guides that take you on the various activities are all fantastic and so passionate about what it is they're doing. After days out it was so nice to come back to such exceptional food and lovely waiting staff who were keen to here about our day. It may be an investment staying here but one you definitely won't regret!

We booked 7 nights at Clayoquot, and that was the cleverest thing we've done!
Clayoquot is simply brilliant! But what made our experience there unique and memorable was the fact we stayed for more than the usual 3-4 nights. So we were able to truly enjoy this place and get to know the staff, who is simply marvelous. Every member of staff was exceptional. So friendly, fun and passionate about what they do. Staff is this place's greatest asset.

The day we got there, lots of guests were coming too. We felt the arrival was very intimidating. We had to wait for quite a long time for all guests to arrive to get to our tent. It's fine to wait, but as we didn't know the place we didn't know what to do. We didn't feel at ease.

But from there it went better and better every day. The tents are great, big and luxurious. We were 4 of us in the tent : my husband and I, plus our 2 daughters aged 10 and 12. It was very comfortable.
The place itself is gorgeous - magnificent.
To start, you tend to do their main activities such as the wildlife excursion, which is great, but to be honest our favourite ones were some nearly tailored-made excursions they organised for us as they got to know us and proposed ideas of things to do.
After a morning of surfing, we went prawn fishing with Shell (he is wonderful) and the cooks prepared our prawns for supper. We went fishing with Steve (who's extraordinary and really fun), then cooked crabs, fish and s'mores on a fire we made, then went water skiing and paddle boarding, and finished the day with seeing black bears. What a day!
But another highlight of this place is the restaurant. We tried to eat at the bar (open kitchen) nearly every night so we could watch the cooks. That was a very special moment. The chef and his team are very talented and very fun! We had such a great time with them! It was just brilliant. They are very accessible and we have hilarious photos with them! And last, but certainly not least, my favourite...Teresa, the sommelier!
She is a champion. Do trust her and let her show you her treasure : wonderful Canadian wines! She really knows her wine and guides you throughout your meal!

So a wonderful place for everyone - family with young or older kids, retired couples, honeymooners,....We all seemed to mix without bothering each other, which is quite exceptional and makes this place very special.
NB: we couldn't do the Cloud camp as it was destroyed during the winter. So, means we'll have to come back...hopefully sooner than later.

It has been several years since we were there but the food, accommodations and everything there is just the best. Activities are well planned with something to interest everyone. It is just an unusual trip that you should experience. It is expensive but well worth the price. From the reports i heard it has just gotten better.

We had this place on our travel list for a long time but were put off by the price, even though we are fairly extravagant travelers. We finally gave in to our intense curiosity one month ago and were pleased that we did. The location is as beautiful as you might expect given that you must arrive by seaplane because it is so remote there are no roads. The food was spectacular and we loved sitting at the counter for our meals chatting with the chefs and witnessing the utmost care that they put into everything. If you enjoy cooking classes, you will love this chance to see chefs at work.
Our tent was comfortable and quiet, perched over the river which is tidal and dries up during the day. We did the all day Zodiac boat and hiking trip called the "wild side" on our first day which was too much time in the boat on rough waters for me but lots of people loved it and we did see bears and whales and visit a fascinating couple who live on a floating garden. We also enjoyed the hiking, kayaking, and horseback riding. We were disappointed that fly fishing and river kayaking were not available because of the very dry weather this winter and spring but that is certainly not the fault of the lodge.
We enjoyed the open, help yourself, bar, the sommelier, and the wine pairings with each dinner.
My suggestions for improvement have to do with communication about the available activities. The woman who took us to our tent mentioned that there is morning yoga which I enjoyed, but others were never informed about it. Each guest has to speak with the manager during a certain time period each day about their plans for the next day but there is very little written (or video) information available so everyone has to ask the same questions and must wait their turn to book their activities. This process is cumbersome, especially for such a high end destination.
We are glad we had the chance to spend time at Clayoquot.

Breathtakingly beautiful describes this very special and pristine part of the world! Our party of four, ahem, "mature" adults were frazzled and fried from the previous days' airline misadventures which evaporated immediately upon arrival at Clayoquot. Cool, fresh air, lovely warm smiles and hellos from hosts (all staff are considered your hosts!), and friendly pups with wagging tails greeted us at the dock. Boone and Polk (the team of Norwegian Fiord draft horses) did the honors of pulling the wagon to the camp. Our stay exceeded all expectations and then some. Attention to detail and comfort is evident throughout! Ensuite tents with decks overlooking the beautiful estuary were divine- rustic and elegant, thoughtfully and artfully appointed and verrrrrry comfortable. The food
was superb - beautifully prepared by chef Ryan and his team. We loved the BC wine pairings as our lovely Tereza worked her magic. Johnny- Howard (good sport that he was!) consistently delivered amazing concoctions and generous doses of his dry wit! The diversity of activities and spa services is second to none and for YOUR enjoyment. I stress YOUR enjoyment because this is what makes Clayoquot... well, Clayoquot. Personalized, customized and pleasantly low key...an experience that will be relished by all. We enjoyed all of the activities we did, including kayaking, salmon fishing, sporting clays, archery, hot stone massages (ahhhhh!) and trail riding. May I say, the private day ride (thank you again, dear Dickson!) through old growth forests winding along the Ursus river was a highlight for my husband and me. We have horses back home in Texas and ride regularly, but there is NO better way to see and experience the ethereal beauty of this area than on the back of their steady and seasoned mounts (thanks to Cash and Cheyene!). A big-hearted Texas "thanks y'all!" to the entire Clayoquot family; we loved every minute of our slice of heaven!

We have just returned from our third annual trip to Clayoquot. The resort continues to find new ways to surpass each year. We were the fifth family to try the overnight mountain experience this year and what an experience it was. Suffice to say words cannot describe the total experience you will feel. Once again Chef Ryan worked his magic both at the cook house and on the top of the mountain. Special thanks to John and Adele and the entire crew for making what Clayoquot is today.

Seek out this resort for you will NOT be disappointed.

We visited Clayoquot in the beginning of July and our only regret is we stayed for 4 nights and not 7. We were coming from the Four Seasons in whistler and have never "glamped" before so we were slightly afraid we would be missing the comforts of the Four Seasons (which we loved)-my husband even asked me if we could shorten our stay at Clayoquot for fear of the unknown...well, thank goodness we didn't. As much as we loved the FS in whistler, Clayoquot and the whole experience there-blew it away!!!! we are a family of 5-kids are 8, 10, 12-we all slept in one of the deluxe tents and it was the first time we have all been in the same room (we normally would get a two bedroom suite to ensure everyone sleeps well) Turns out our nights at clayoquot were the best nights sleep ever. (and we fit great)
Since we've gotten home, I have literally been researching to find another resort similar to clayoquot in another interesting area-and I truly don't think it exists.
I can't say enough about this wonderful place-excursions were all top notch with perfectly new equipment for each one. Food was truly 5 star-even based on Chicago, new York, paris standards--since our trip-we have been to both paris and new York at all high end restaurants-including 3star Michelin rated in paris-and none even compared to food at clayoquot. it is truly rugged day and luxurious nights. The sommelier was fantastic too! recently travelled to napa and this was just as fantastic.
I could go on and on--really-an experience of a life time----Just go......we will be back.

We can't thank our guests enough for reviews like this one! WOW is all I can say and THANK YOU ChicagoLambeau!! I did want to clarify our 2 different style of tents though in case this review has helped make a decision for anyone out there. We have 20 guests tents; 12 of which are our Luxury Ensuite tents which is what ChicagoLambeau is speaking about. These are the ones that have the bathroom attached with radiant in floor heating and outdoor cedar showers. These are a little extra but most of our guests enjoy this style of tent. The other 8 tents are our Original Deluxe Outpost tents. These are the tents that have the detached environmentally friendly composting toilets and shower house like you would find in the old "outpost" days. We love these tents and still have them as this is what we have built our reputation on. In fact, I was just recently told by a guest that has been coming to us for years, that he prefers this style as you truly feel like you are camping with all the luxury. It's up to you though, we will be happy to greet you on check in day with a warm hug, a wagon ride and a trip of a lifetime! See you soon (we hope!) Kathy

Hi there Sandra, Unfortunately we can't allow pets at the lodge. The reviews are with reference to our staff dogs, who undergo training to ensure they are capable of managing in the wild. We have to take precautions to safeguard biodiversity and ensure the ecosystem goes undisturbed, we hope you understand. Sincerely, Clayoquot Wilderness Lodge

Do you the weather would be better in mid-late July, or early to mid Aug for this particular area of Canada? Thanks!
Answer from Baillie Lodges
Sydney, Australia27 contributions2 helpful votes
Thanks for reaching out and great question. The temperature and weather between July and August is very similar, with both months recording average daily highs of 23 degrees (Celsius), and the lowest months of rainfall for the year with less than 100 millimetres. August typically sees the return of thick morning fog, striking a nice contrast to the mountains and burning off throughout the morning. The dates you've mentioned showcase fantastic weather to explore the Sound, and I hope we get to show you in person!

Hi Richard, While we offer ocean fishing and alpine lake fishing experiences, we are no longer offering activities targeting Salmon due to environmental sustainability implications. We do have specialist fly fishing guides who can take you fishing the beautiful lakes and rivers, but protecting Salmon is critical for the ecosystem. Thanks Richard
