As many have commented before, it really is difficult to describe a place as unique as Clayoquot. Our visit to the resort certainly ranks as our most memorable holiday and the reasons are many. The beauty of the Sound is breathtaking and the resort has been designed to maximise the impact of the stunning surroundings. All of the resort activities allow visitors to further explore and appreciate the wild and untouched landscape, which the knowledgeable and enthusiastic team go out of their way to share with their visitors. Anyone with any concern about the 'tents' need not worry-this is luxury at its best. As for the food and wine, we are still talking about both, now a year out from our stay! Undoubtedly a trip to Clayoquot is expensive but, if you're even at the point of considering it, go for it. It's a trip you will remember forever.

It’s hard to know where to begin. Our experience at Clayoquot (pronounced clack-quit, we learned) was beyond our imaginations and expectations. We were never disappointed – the accommodations (including the new ensuite bathroom tents), the food, the spa – are all what you would expect at this price point. The setting is breathtaking and the care with which the resort occupies the land is evident throughout.

What makes CWR special is the people. The staff are genuine – friendly, thoughtful, interested. They take their jobs seriously and seriously love what they do. John and Adele are attentive hosts who go above and beyond to ensure your comfort and enjoyment at all times. Ryan and his team create amazing food and receive special requests without hesitation. The guides are friendly, accommodating, caring folks who might just have the best job on the planet.

We visited with our 3 children (ages 12, 10, and 9) and their grandparents. CWR met each of our needs perfectly. The children enjoyed riding bikes morning and evening with the other guest kids. They took most dinners at the counter where Ryan and his team interviewed them for their tastes, and encouraged them (often successfully!) to try new things. While we dined on our 5 course meal, the kids played outside with the other kids – trampoline, bikes, pool room….Just being kids, with a freedom they don’t often find at home. Our kids cried saying goodbye to their new friends. Their grandparents loved the new ensuite bathrooms which offered everything a first-class hotel would. CWR missed nothing in their design and execution.

We loved the abundance of activities and opportunities for exploring the area, testing your limits, having fun with family, or just relaxing and slowing down. John made it look easy as he scheduled each day’s “to do” list for every family. There was never an issue of getting to do what you wanted….only a challenge of squeezing everything in (we didn’t in our 4 days there).

Every Trip Advisor review needs a “before you go” recommendation. Ours would be around clothing. We overpacked on the “glam” side of things (dressier clothes for dinner) at the expense of “active”. This is an adventure retreat where you will get dirty and wet (there is laundry service). Bring lots of clothes for fishing, hiking, biking, kayaking, horseback riding and fewer fancier things for dinner. Layers are really important as the temperature shifts widely. There is a fantastic “mercantile” tent where we purchased quality gear we were lacking (and happily have some great, useful souvenirs to use at home).

One last note: We really enjoyed getting to know the staff and other guests at CWR. If you are looking for a solitary retreat, CWR can work for you, but you’ll be missing out on making great friendships and connections with others. If you go, take the time to engage with others around the fire, on the boat, on the trail. One of my favorite activities was a hike with one of the guides. We sat at the top of the waterfall and talked for over an hour. These are the moments that make a place like CWR so special and worth a repeat visit.

The "Wild Retreat" is a truly unique experience. The setting could not be more spectacular. If you like outdoor activities and have deep pockets, this is a definite option. Virtually every activity you can imagine is available and included from kayaking to zip lines to skeet shooting. The food is superb and the staff goes out of its way to provide first class service. However, if you are used to "luxury", you will be in for a surprise. The price is comparable to other "tented" facilities around the world which include luxury "in tent" bathrooms. Here you need to go to a "self composting" toilet which is adjacent to your tent. There are communal showers as well. These two items are what make this property fall short from a 5 star experience. They also allow smoking in the public areas which is another drawback. All in all I would describe it as a once in a lifetime trip for a number of reasons.

Ensuite Bathrooms are being added to our tents for our 2011 Season. Based on your comments and many others over the years. Up until now, it has been impossible for us to environmentally and conscientiously deal with the septic and grey water at our Resort. As the tents are located over a fragile river's estuary in a World Biosphere Reserve, we have not been able to find or purchase a treatment plant system that would effectively deal with these needs. In the past month, we have been able to find a very new Treatment Plant system, which will allow us to add flush toilets and private showers to 12 of our 20 tents. We are making this upgrade this winter and the new tents will be available for our 2011 Season when we reopen at the end of May. I hope you will be able to come back and visit us to try these new facilities soon.

We recently stayed at Clayoquot Wilderness Resort and had an amazing vacation. We can’t say enough about the staff and Management of this resort. From the enthusiastic guides, to the excellent restaurant staff, housekeeping (yes they do your laundry daily), organizational staff and management, they exemplify 5 star service. While other high end hotels boast great service, this property’s employees are genuine and accommodating beyond expectations. The location is beautiful and serene. One can really check out of reality and decompress (no tv, newspapers, keys, money needed). Wifi is available in your tent which is handy but don’t use it if you really want to disconnect. There are so many activities and ways to relax you could easily stay a week without getting bored. Bradley was a wonderful host and the dogs on property enhanced the home-like feel. We highly recommend this property and look forward to returning!

Clayoquot is arguably one of the most remote and beautiful wilderness retreats in the world. Access is primarily by floatplane from Vancouver (a forty minute flight over the mountains), although it is possible to access via boat from Tofino. There are no roads into Clayoquot, which sits in the middle of 600 acres of private forest surrounded by thousands of acres of Crown land. Accommodations consist of "tents", but do not confuse this with your image of Boy Scout tents. Clayoqout's are the epitome of camping luxury with king-sized beds, fireplaces, en suite bathrooms with in-floor heating and an attached outdoor shower. The furnishings are very tasteful with antiques combined with a rustic feel and our accomodation had a deck with deckchairs overlooking the Bedwell River and the snow-capped peaks. The choice of outdoor activities is extensive and all-inclusive, with the exception of several "a la carte" options which are primarily accessed via helicopter. Inclusive activities range from hiking, kayaking, paddleboadrig, fly and ocean fishing, surfing, rock wall and tree climbing, archery, to horseback riding.. Each activity is guided by one or more highly professional and enthusiastic young guides. Since it was just the two of us, we has our own guide for each activity except when a boat was involved ( in which case we also had a captain) .In addition to the beautiful forests, snow-capped peaks, moss-covered trails amongst huge, first growth trees and wild berry bushes galore, wildlife abounds with bald eagles, black bears, seals, etc. My only caveat is that the food is a bit too "fancy" or "fussy" for my taste, given that Clayoqout is a wilderness retreat,I surmise that many guests are not satisfied with excellent ingredients simply prepared and presented because they are paying so much for the experience. My motto is "less is more", but many people apparently disagree.

You arrive here by seaplane ,weather permitting. I must admit to feeling rather nervous on arrival as we were staying for seven days. I was concerned that we would get bored or be thrust too closely together with other guests which has happened on a previous holiday. I needn't have worried. All bar one of the activities that we chose to do were completely on our own with our own guide and we certainly weren't bored.
The resort is breathtakingly beautiful. It is well worth opting for an en-suite room as they are much lovelier inside and better situated.
The food is exceptional. There is a set menu which doesn't change but the delightful chefs are more than happy to make you whatever you want.
There are activities to suit everyone and they are tailored to suit your own agenda. Some of these are obviously weather permitting so may not always be available. We had wonderful weather when we were there but I know that they have many more rainy day activities planned than before.
There is a generosity of spirit prevailing in this resort. There are things they could charge extra for but don't and you can do as many activities as you want on your departure day.
The staff are energetic, enthusiastic and delightful.Nothing is too much trouble. I wanted to write an objective review but I must mention two outstanding members of the Clayoquot team. Theresa, the sommelier is superlative and the incomparable Nikki who made sure our stay was everything and more than we'd hoped for.
We loved our stay,a truly unique experience.

Absolutely wonderful service. We were blessed with good weather, but chatting to guests who had been before (I'm really jealous!) bad weather just means different activities, and possibly more time hanging round the cookhouse and eating the delicious food.
It is very expensive but try to go for seven days rather than anything shorter and you won't be left regretting that you couldn't do everything you might have wanted to do.
A fantastic place for older children and teenagers, but it wouldn't be that relaxing with under 5's.

Hi there Sandra, Unfortunately we can't allow pets at the lodge. The reviews are with reference to our staff dogs, who undergo training to ensure they are capable of managing in the wild. We have to take precautions to safeguard biodiversity and ensure the ecosystem goes undisturbed, we hope you understand. Sincerely, Clayoquot Wilderness Lodge

Do you the weather would be better in mid-late July, or early to mid Aug for this particular area of Canada? Thanks!
Answer from Baillie Lodges
Sydney, Australia27 contributions2 helpful votes
Thanks for reaching out and great question. The temperature and weather between July and August is very similar, with both months recording average daily highs of 23 degrees (Celsius), and the lowest months of rainfall for the year with less than 100 millimetres. August typically sees the return of thick morning fog, striking a nice contrast to the mountains and burning off throughout the morning. The dates you've mentioned showcase fantastic weather to explore the Sound, and I hope we get to show you in person!

Hi Richard, While we offer ocean fishing and alpine lake fishing experiences, we are no longer offering activities targeting Salmon due to environmental sustainability implications. We do have specialist fly fishing guides who can take you fishing the beautiful lakes and rivers, but protecting Salmon is critical for the ecosystem. Thanks Richard
