My husband and I just returned from a few days of vacationing in Sanibel. We stayed at the Sunset Beach Inn. I had previously stayed there on a trip with a friend and was so impressed that I booked us there for our vacation. We were not disappointed! The place was well maintained, landscaped beautifully and clean! We had booked a room on the corner with a wrap around balcony. Hoping for ground floor, because as an older couple it is difficult to drag luggage up steps, we arrived to find they had put us in the same corner room on the next floor up. I mentioned at check-in that would be ok, but worried about getting our suitcase up the stairs. Kerline, at the front desk, had someone waiting to assist us with our luggage when we got to the room. In fact, Kerline was super professional and pleasant anytime we dealt with her. She even sent a text at one point to find out how our stay was going! This to me was above and beyond anything I expected.

Our room was spacious, clean and the balcony made it all worthwhile! I can't imagine we would have been any happier with the first floor room. The view of the beach and the evening sunsets was spectacular from our balcony. We were right on the beach and enjoyed the fact that chairs and umbrellas were set out every day for guest use. We also had access to bicycles, kayaks and paddleboards. The pool is well maintained and clean and the area around it was the same. We enjoyed time at the pool while there also!

The location of Sunset Beach Inn makes it convenient to most everything you could want or need.

We did not take advantage of the free breakfast, but did see that it contained numerous types of danish, breakfast bars and cereal, along with fruit, yogurt, juice, milk and coffee. There was something for everybody there!

We requested some fresh bath cloths and towels one morning and they had been delivered by the time we had breakfast and returned to our room. The staff was very responsive to our request. That is the kind of service I appreciate from any hotel, but especially one that is advertised as something of a budget saver.

This was my second stay at Sunset Beach Inn, but it won't be the last. After having nothing but wonderful experiences both times, I would not hesitate to recommend this place to anyone who wants a moderately priced place to stay.

I must single out Kerline in the office who was friendly, polite and professional from check-in until check-out! She is a real asset to the resort.

We came to spread ashes for a family never we lost this year butt Sally got in the way. We spent 2 nights and it rained the whole time.

It is an older hotel but very clean and renovated. We were really impressed with the windows and sliding doors as you couldn't hear the storm raging outside.

The room was clean, breakfast was good and delivered too the room. The hotel is puppy friendly and had free kayaks, water boards, etc but the storm got inn the way if that too.

My family and I just returned today from a three day stay at the Sunset Beach Inn on Sanibel Island. We could not have been happier with the accommodations and the attention given to us, as guests, at this inn. The staff members are ALL very helpful, friendly and courteous. We also want to single out Kerline who we dealt with primarily and she is a sweetheart and EXTREMELY kind and helpful. As for accommodations.... the rooms are extremely clean, the bathrooms are immaculate and the proximity of all rooms to the beach are unbeatable. The inn is located no more than 30 feet from the beach which was the highlight for me and my kids. Added to that, the inn provides guests with free use of kayaks and paddle boards and besides the gorgeous beach, it has a very large and extremely well maintained pool. Overall, giving this inn five stars was a no-brainer since it deserves every single one of them. The concluding line is that if you are seeking an extremely well priced place to stay which is right smack on the beach and you want a very clean and well maintained inn to stay in, this is the place for you.

Pros: location, on the beach, pool, most staff friendly (only one staff working towels/laundry on our last day went out of her way to say hello to us)

Cons: outdated rooms, unclean (don’t look at the baseboards or behind the beds), horrible smell of mildew throughout the entire suite, questionable cleanliness of dishes/utensils in our kitchenette, no room service, coffee, and the continental breakfast was Pillsbury pre-packaged pastries and juice with cheap coffee packets to make in the room. Oh. And the carpet- I cannot imagine what is lurking and growing under the carpet.
Only one cleaning staff ever approached us and asked how our stay was; it felt as if we were bothering the front desk when we had to go in there.

Was doable for our family vacation but we wouldn’t ever stay here or at a related facility again. And for $400+ per night, very disappointing.

When booking the hotel I was trying to find an affordable option for the area. In hind sight I should have sprung for the hotel that costs 20$ more down the street.

For 500 for two nights we are staying in a 1star motel, definitely not a “resort”. Only redeeming quality is the location to the beach.

I understand sanibel has a laidback beach vibe but for the amount we are paying this is highway robbery. We are currently in our second room here after having to move from the first one. Upon entering the first room the smell of mold almost knocked us over. The carpet was damp and I was wary taking my shoes off. We all felt as damp and started to smell as moldy as the room. Mismatched furniture and a 10 inch tv completed the room. I finally had enough and was starting to have breathing issues. Sent my husband to the front desk to ask for a different room (at 8pm)

Second room smelled better and the carpet wasn’t damp but room still has the same mismatched furniture and sense of not being truly clean. Carpet has hair from previous guest, so still not walking around the room without shoes. Tv is slightly larger but now has giant lines down the middle. Toddler is currently watching his program on our iPad, not something I expect from a “resort” that we’re paying 250$ a night for. If we paid 60$ a night I would be happy.

I know hotels right on the beach have moisture issues, but having stayed at numerous hotels on numerous beaches I have never experienced this amount of unpleasant mold smell.

Not sure what anyone could do to fix this except for a total renovation. I’m sure the cleaning and facility people do the best they can with what they have but this motel has seen better days. As I write this the smell of mold seems to have enveloped everything we own, we will have to wash our clothes and air our suitcases multiple times when we get home....

We will be back to sanibel island but we will never be back to this motel.

First room was 107, avoid at all costs!

Dear Nat... I'm so sorry that you had such a disappointing experience during your recent stay with us. Please be assured that our staff has already looked into the issues you brought to our attention through this review and are working hard to resolve them. There is certainly no excuse for any lack of cleanliness in any of our guest rooms and this is something we very rarely hear about, but our staff is also well aware of the impression you were left with. I do feel obligated to point out a few incorrect perceptions that you mentioned - none of our rooms have 10" TV's. If you perceived that you had a smaller TV in one unit than another then by all means we are at fault there, and I apologize for that. Additionally, though there may be some slight variations in the details of some rooms, our photos do accurately depict our guest rooms. Again, if that was not your perception, I hope we might have an opportunity to discuss this further. Please accept our most humble apologies, and an offer to contact me directly (see my contact information below) so that I may be given an opportunity to make this right - now and for any potential future opportunity we may have to serve you and renew your trust in us. Sincerely, Bill Wellman General Manager 239-472-3181 bwellman@theinnsofsanibel.com

I have mixed feelings about our stay here. Whilst there were some positive points, there were also some big negatives which impacted our stay and, sadly, I was glad to leave.

We travelled over 6 hours with a baby and a 3 year old, arriving at 6.15pm (check in is from 4pm). The office was closed and we had to drive to a sister hotel 20 minutes away to retrieve our key card, which did not work! We then had to wait 30 mins for maintenance to come from the sister hotel to let us in to our room, finally 2+ hours after our initial arrival! No attempt was made to email or telephone us in advance that the office would be closed. I would have felt better about the situation had there been any genuine apology or empathy from the check-in staff at the sister hotel or at Sunset Beach Inn the next day, but there wasn't. We did not feel like valued guests at all. This customer service was just not good enough.

Onto the place itself. The room was very dated, which I expected having read reviews. The drawers and wardrobe smelt damp and musty. I did not unpack any of our clothes, preferred to keep them in our suitcases. The room was otherwise clean. Pool towels were in very short supply. We felt that reception would nod and agree to 'pass the message on' or 'look into it' whenever we had any requests but this just didn't seem to be happening eg. We requested fresh bathroom towels 4 times - in the end, my husband went directly to housekeeping.

The positive points: situated right on the beach, fantastic sunsets, sun loungers and parasols available, nice swimming pool with toys for children.

Unfortunately the checking in experience gave me an uneasy feel from the start and I regretted traipsing my family across from Miami for this trip. This could have been rectified by the great customer service that I have read about on some reviews but it just wasn't there for us. I understand that there may be staff shortages due to Covid but that's no excuse for lacklustre, unempathetic service.

I would advise booking in advance for Sanibel Island to give yourself a greater number of lodging options. I wouldn't recommend staying here unless you have read the reviews and understand that it's very dated and don't get too excited about receiving a warm welcome. The only big plus point was the beach location but I'm sure there are other well-located properties that would give you a better experience.

Dear 794, Thank you for sharing your impressions of your visit in January. I hope you will accept my apologies for the significant delay in my reply - this in no way indicates any lack of concern regarding your visit. I'm so disappointed that you found so much that wasn't up to our standards - and I can assure you, nearly everything you mentioned, from the odd early evening closure or our office to the lack of professional and empathetic handling of your issues, is definitely not our standard level of service, as you alluded to in your review. While I'm pleased that you enjoyed other aspects of the resort but I would like to have an opportunity to address your situation and perhaps have an opportunity to make things right. Please contact me directly at your earliest convenience. Sincere regards, Bill Wellman General Manager 239-472-3181 Ext. 6308 bwellman@theinnsofsanibel.com

Your great vacation day starts with the warm smile and professional assistance from Leslie in the office. Our 2 bedroom apartment was kept perfectly clean and well stocked by the best housekeeper ever - Shirley! We were very lucky to have the kind and professional Omar, who was always willing and able to be helpful and who kept the outdoor areas in tip top shape! Service IS everything. Thank you all

My first time @ Sanibel island & first time traveling with our puppy. I called ahead and spoke with Jason Trimble 3 times I think I was nervous never have I ever taken a pet with me on vacation he is fabulous if he doesn’t answer he will call you back he reassured me it would be fine. When we arrive we had been upgraded by Kerline she was off until the next day but worth the wait. Her smile is amazing and is so gracious the breakfast was great all you could want yogurt, juice, bagels, pastries, granola bars, cereal, oatmeal, fruit, coffee ,tea & hot chocolate. It’s right on the beach yes they had bikes, pool, tennis courts and more we stayed on the beach used nothing but the beach and the shells are fabulous. No hotel isn’t brand new but it’s clean staff are working all the time putting out chase lounges & umbrellas on the beach ( the only thing we used) picking up any trash & leaves. My husband is hard to please and he even said I couldn’t have picked a better place for us & pup than the Sunset Beach Inn. I can’t tell you enough how fabulous Kerline is asking about our day and if we needed anything.I’m so happy I picked Sunset Beach Inn for our trip it’s perfect no long hike to the beach you could walk right to your room and get whatever you wanted or needed. Everyone working spoke to me when I passed them on grounds or hallway such a nice island vibe and they even asked to pet my dog and said she was pretty. It rained one night we never head it.We went for the beach and we got it and it’s pet friendly.

Went to Sanibel for an extended weekend escape. We wanted an ocean front view close to center of the island and the Sunset Beach Inn met all our requirements. Our room was better than expected with a beautiful view right from our balcony. We felt very safe from a COVID perspective with temperature checks when we checked in, mask requirements, no one entered our room during the stay and they delivered on time tal breakfast to our door. It is an older property that is very nicely maintained, with a beautiful pool, lush grounds and right on the beach. Bikes, paddle boards and kayaks were available or just relaxing on a chair under an umbrella. Very, very relaxing.

The Sunset Beach Inn was listed as a budget-friendly Inn and it did not disappoint. The staff provided amazing customer service (room cleaning, use of a hotspot, fan, text messages for communication, impressive breakfast variety, etc.) and I felt very safe staying there. This Inn is just steps from the beach and a must-do again on my list of vacation destinations.

It is. Many, many years ago, Sunset Beach was a Best Western. It actually opened as the "Jolly Roger", before taking on a Best Western flag, prior to it's current rendition. Thanks for asking! We hope to see you again soon. Bill Wellman, General Manager
