The JW Marriott Hotel Rio de Janeiro offers a range of amenities that guests appreciate, including a renovated rooftop bar and satisfying breakfast, though some have noted a small pool and slow elevators. While the ocean view rooms earn high marks, there are concerns about outdated bathrooms and cleanliness.
Despite the commendable service and prime beachfront location, the hotel's value is questioned due to high prices and aging facilities. The atmosphere presents a mix of newly renovated spaces and tired decor, with varying opinions on the hotel's ambiance.

Really enjoyed our stay. Staff was friendly and offered advice on what to see and do on our 3 day stay at Rio. Cozy rooms and small, yet adequate pool. Right across the street from Copacabana beach. The hotel also offers beach side recliners and more importantly hotel staff to keep after your stuff while you are there. We did book a tour through the hotel that never showed up (hence the 4 vs 5 stars). Still enjoyed our stay though!

We are new members to Bonvoy. The JW Marriott Rio de Janeiro is to my experience dedicated to customer service. Our stay there was from March 2nd to March 13th. We have stayed there 3 times already. It is well situated in Copacabana beach. The breakfast is very good, with everything from omelets to gluten free selection. They have their own chairs and parasols on the beach compared to some other hotels that don’t and you have to rent them from beach vendors. It is a plus since you can leave and return without having to pay every time. There is a rooftop pool that is heated. Due to Covid there are only 14 lounge chairs available around the pool, which sometimes meant that you couldn’t get a spot. But they’re is a bit further down on the roof ; chairs, sofas that you can use, you just won’t be sitting “at” the pool. The rooms are a bit on the older side but very clean and comfortable. The staff is really professional, helpful and kind. The room service was very efficient, our room got made early during the day which we quite appreciated. We had access to the Griffin Lounge where we got to know one amazing employee/host. His name is Hermando, he was always greeting every guest, making sure everyone was enjoying themselves, he spoke Portuguese, Spanish and English. I see great potential for this amazing employee. I think he reflects exactly what Marriott stands for : amazing guest service and experience. We liked our stay so much that we are returning for Easter.

I stayed the weekend of Carnaval which is an extremely busy time for all Rio hotels. The check-in was fast and efficient and all their staff were great especially the folks at the concierge desk. They were able to procure tickets for the Sambadrome and provide recommendations of the famous “blocos” street parties. They have a solid beach service, just walk across the street and show your room key to the attendant and he will set up a beach chair and umbrella all for free. They also have vendors not affiliated to the hotel that can bring you drinks and food, you can order directly with the private vendor or the hotel beach service attendant but you must pay cash as it is not included in the hotel beach service and a tip for the attendant is expected.

Stayed here for nine nights, seven of which the city was on Covid lockdown. The experience at this hotel was among the best stays I've ever experienced (I am a frequent traveller).
Room was a standard King with an ocean view, but felt spacious for two people. Bed was comfortable and the amenities in the room was very good. The hotel lounge was a comfortable space for working or enjoying a great view of the ocean. Happy hour daily was nice with some small plates and beer/wine.
The rooftop pool is small but still nice. There's a bar upstairs with plenty of drink options and another excellent view of the coast. The bartenders were excellent, very attentive and suggested some good drink options.
The restaurant has an excellent breakfast with plenty of delicious options. Lunch and dinner includes similar menus and the food for those meals is also tasty. There is a spa onsite where you can get a massage at a reasonable price.
The best part of this hotel was its staff. They were beyond helpful during our stay and we were grateful for everything they did for us. They went above and beyond their responsibilities to make us feel comfortable and help us get tours booked and PCR tests completed before heading home. The staff working the restaurant were amazing and housekeeping did an excellent job each and every day. You will not find a better staff anywhere. I highly recommend staying at the JW Marriott Rio!!

Good: from housekeeping to the front desk, the staff at this hotel was amazingly helpful in every way…friendly, attentive…simply wonderful. The breakfast (included in my rate) was very complete and tasty and room service was fast and reasonably priced (try the burger!). Congratulations on providing such great customer service. The location is good…directly across from the beach…and the rooftop pool is nice in case you don’t want to hang at the beach.
Bad: the property itself is not up to JW standards. Stained carpeting, horrible aromatics pumped into the lobby, dangling light fixture in the hallway, cramped room.
My bottom line: I wouldn’t be upset if I had to stay here again, but for the next time in Rio I’d probably want to try a different hotel in order to have a better overall experience.

The location and staff make up for a lot of the room shortcomings. We loved the beach area dedicated to the hotel located directly across the street. They even run hoses from the boards walk to the seating area so you don't burn your feet walking in the sand. Beautiful touch. The hotel itself, much like myself, is starting to show its age. Rooms feel a bit dated and reminded us more of an airport Marriott than a JW on Copacabana beach. Some electrical outlets didn't work in our room, bedsheets had a hole in them, and when I needed an iron we went through 3 before getting one that worked(water actually poured out of the electrical cord on the first one...yikes). Granted we didn't pay for an ocean view room but the courtyard view is really just like looking at another building. There's nothing courtyard or atrium about it. The upstairs bar sported nice views but other than that was very lack luster. Bright spots in the room were comfy bed and pillows, ample mini bar, good water pressure and nice heavy towels. After landing at 615am and arriving shortly after, the super early check-in we got was MUCH appreciated (but that comes with Marriott status and availability).

We spent over a week at the JW Rio during the Carnaval time. The hotel is located at the best possible location in the middle of Copacabana. We had a room at the top floors with great beach view. The highlights was the Concierge desk which was instrumental in making our time so great. The staff was patient and informative. Most of all Carmen took a great care of us from start to finish. Starting from calls and emails we had prior to our arrival; we got great tips and information about safety and the Carnaval activities. They got us tickets to the Sambadrome ; gave us great tips on what else to do including a visit to the Rio Scenarium where they had live Samba bands. Plus anything we needed was immediately brought to the room. Many Thanks - Made our Rio trip and experience super great.

I agree with other people who commented that hotel is a little dated. However, it is still clean, respectable, has a nice pool, gym and spa. The main thing is that the staff is very accommodating and treat you well and the location is good if you want to be in Copacabana.

We recently made our first trip to Brazil, spending a fortnight in Rio de Janeiro. The JW Marriott was very accommodating, in a perfect location at the center of Copacabana Beach. There are lots of cafes and restaurants within easy walking distance. Also Bank ATMs, stores, and little shopping centers on the streets behind the hotel. We used Uber and cabs extensively, they were both inexpensive and convenient. The beach itself is one of the best beaches I've ever seen, and since I live in a highly rated beach area myself, I consider this very high praise. The JWM conveniently provides free beach chairs, umbrellas, and towels.
The JWM itself is very nicely furnished, and the staff was very helpful. Both the morning breakfasts and the executive lounge evening happy hour buffets were excellent. The HH buffet was so good that on several evenings we overindulged and were too satiated to have dinner.
I'd like to give a special thanks to Victoria in the Executive Lounge, Hernando the Bartender, Raasa and Matthew at the front desk, Guest Relations Mgr Thaeis, Chef Gustavo, and in the Restaurant Nicole the hostess and Marcelle our waitress. You were all so nice and accommodating, and your food, drinks, and service were all outstanding. I look forward to visiting again.

This hotel is in a good location on Copacabana beach but needs some serious updating. Next time we would choose another hotel. Service was fine. We were glad that breakfast was extra ($20 pp/day) so we declined and found a great breakfast place called The Bakers only a couple blocks away and just a few dollars! There are quite a few restaurants walking distance with outdoor seating.
