Staff were very welcoming . We had opted for the traditional ryokan room in the older part of the hotel. Bathroom very dated. Beds , actually futons not made up until after dinner. Pillows very uncomfortable. Had to ask for extra towels as 2 small towels provided.
Multicourse dinner was included , very Japanese cooking but delicious as was the traditional breakfast. If one doesn’t like fish you will be disappointed.
No bottles of wine available apart from Spanish cava. White and red wine by the glass is from cheap boxed wine , not bottles.
I agree with other reviewers that a major upgrade is required in the traditional rooms.
Onsen was fine but you are required to bring your room towel with you which is crazy at this level

We really enjoyed our stay here during our trip to Japan.
We had one vegetarian in our group who was really well catered for in the set menu - one of the best meals of our trip.
We booked the private Onsen which was fantastic & We also really liked the traditional rooms and wonderful staff

Only thing that would have been nicer is if the bar had been open in the evening.

We absolutely loved this! Yes perhaps some of the decor was a tad tired but Japan like most of the hotels they have suffered through Covid. Our room was by far the most spacious we had on our Japan tour and was lovely traditional style.
The baths onsen were amazing and not full at all - the meal in the evening was outstanding and I couldn’t fault the food and or the passion of the waiting staff.
The hotel stood out for the team behind it. Everyone super friendly and strives to provide a great service would highly recommend.

The ryokan is set high above the town but unfortunately the area around the hotel smelled awful. I appreciate this is not the fault of the ryokan but gives a very bad first impression. The smell is not just of sulphur but of sewage.
The room was Western/Japanese with Tatami flooring and a seating area. Unfortunately we didn’t have a private onsen and we were given very little information about the public one other than the location and that you needed to take your towel from the room. These towels were of very poor quality and there was only one per person. There was nowhere to dry them after use. The private bathroom was very outdated.
There was a kettle and tea and coffee but the water tasted disgusting even when boiled to make tea so we didn’t trust drinking it.
Dinner was a Japanese multi course meal with a variety of dishes although three of these were miso soup based which was problem if you are not a fan. The drinks were more expensive than anywhere else we had visited.
For breakfast we specifically told staff the night before we didn’t want another multi course fish based meal and just wanted coffee, juice and if possible bread. This turned out to be impossible. No coffee, a huge Japanese meal already set out on our table, no juice unless we paid for it.
In the end we just checked out and left - thirsty and regretting making the trip at all.
We have stayed in other ryokan where the service has been exemplary and our experiences in Japan have been overwhelmingly positive. I would really advise missing this ryokan off your schedule though. It wasn’t a good experience and I couldn’t wait to get out of there.

Now we know Japanese fish is not always to our taste but we watched whilst they boiled cod and it’s entrails at our table - a job to stomach.
They knew we did not fancy fish for our breakfast which had all been paid upfront - the night before w e discussed with our waiter and he said we could have coffee and juice (unlike other places we have stayed here no small amount of fruit or yoghurt) and
In the morning we explained again we did not want the nicely laid out table of food and would be happy with a coffee or juice which was on the counter. We were promptly told by the waitress that we could not have that as it was extra. We explained we were not having food but she stuck to her position. Totally unaccommodating.
In the room we had 2 very thin small bath towels and nothing more - on top of that there was clearly someone smoking in the corridor outside
Overnight there is a slight whirring from some air system which is not possible to turn off
Overall by far our worst experience in Japan

It was just an awful experience from beginning to end. The staff was weird and almost unwelcoming, the dinner was completely inedible- like really bad! The rooms were ok but the bathroom was built in 1800 - like falling apart literally , the rooms were on floor mats for beds which was fine but the bed wasn’t made for you until after dinner so if you wanted to relax before dinner you couldn’t just lay on something comfortable. The private I send was fine but had to pay extra and it was tiny and almost too hot to get into. They made us pay 1100 yen per person per hour to extend checkout by 1 hour and would not let us stay longer.
I could keep going - this hotel is a must miss!

This was the last stay for what was a great holiday in Japan. Unfortunately the standard at this accommodation fell far below what we experienced elsewhere.

The decor beyond the reception area was from the 1980's and there was dust on a lot of the items in the corridor. The bathroom in the rooms likewise was very old and tired with stains on the walls. The room itself was reed mats with futons to sleep on. They were fine.

When we went for a drink before dinner only to be told because of staff shortages the bar was closed. Fortunately one of the staff saw we weren't impressed and did get us drinks. The dinner itself was fine, the food quality was good and tasty but service was a little rushed.

This is the only hotel I have ever stayed in that couldn't organise a taxi, we had a very tight schedule the next morning to catch a train for the airport. When we checked in we asked to book a taxi which they said was no problem, when we got back to the hotel in the evening we were met with a sorry no taxi. Meant we had to forgo breakfast so can't comment on that.

Tbh I should be scoring this as a one star but the service from two of the employees pushed this up a notch. The chap we dealt with at check in and the lady who served us drinks and then dinner in the evening.

I'm not sure why Trailfinders are using this place, I reckon it's living off past glories but I'd definitely say avoid there are far better options out there.

This accommodation looks nice in the pictures, but was disappointing when staying here.

The initial welcome was good. Staff took our bags and we were shown to a Japanese style room. These rooms are average and very much in need of upgrading, particularly the bathroom. I think the Western style rooms are more modern.

The food was presented well..it was a set dinner and breakfast, but some of the food was quite challenging to eat if you are not comfortable with traditional Japanese food. There is no Western style food.

The disappointment was after dinner, everything was closed. A bar was meant to be open on the roof terrace and the library area, but unfortunately everything was closed, so there was nothing to do and the accommodation is not really within walking distance of anything.

I think there are probably much better accommodation options in Hakone.

This hotel was amazing! The staff were very accommodating and polite from the moment we arrived. I stayed in the Kaze luxury tower and the room was exceptional with great views from the balcony. We had the included dinner and breakfast and were blown away. We got to try so many new types of food here and the service was very helpful. I would absolutely recommend and would come again.

I am sorry I can't answer that one for you. I would have thought there is enough room especially as the futons are on the floor.

Hi which room type has private onsen in it?
Answer from AuraTachibana
Hakone-machi, Japan
Dear Onlyfools24, Thank you very much for your interest in our ryokan. We all hope your stay here in Japan will be filled with wonderful memories. Regarding your question, a Japanese Western style room, Twin room and DX Twin room have private onsen. If you reserve a Japanese style room without a private onsen you could rent one on our rooftop which costs 3240JPY per 45 minutes of usage. Reservations can be made at the point of check-in or after. Should there be anything else you would like to know please do feel free to e-mail us. Front Desk, Kazuya Takei
