There is one concern i feel i should share. The indoor pool/spa/steam room/sauna complex is lovely, but if you have any kind of disablement (or not!) be very careful as you walk. The floor is covered with shiny tiles and is very slippery when wet, which is inevitable. There are no rails to hang on to and there was a nastly accident whilst we were there.
And, like another reviewer, I can heartily recommend a trip down the hill to Cafe Momentus. The cakes are very special and the servers very happy to chat about ingredients and baking methods!
Thank you for making sre holiday so special xxx
The hotel has a steep access and would need to be looked at if you had any mobility issues. The views are lovely and the hotel facilities excellent. We were bed and breakfast which was varied and hot with great waiter service. Tables cleared quickly and coffee or tea brought to your table no scrambling round coffee machines. A very relaxed atmosphere with smiling friendly staff. Also the only toaster in years of holidays that toasted the bread perfectly on the first run!
Rooms were spotless and coffee and tea facilities replenish every day. Cleaners were efficient and friendly.
Pool area was lovely with a great view and plenty of sun beds and seating. We had lunch at the hotel a few times during our holiday and found the food top quality.
As we ate out we can honestly say there was not a restaurant we ate at that we could not recommend. The food on this island is top notch and staff very helpful in making sure your needs are met. Prices vary and there are plenty of options to fit all budgets.
We walked down into Funchal most days and as it was the time they light their Christmas decorations the resort was very colourful and had a great lively atmosphere.
Lots of Christmas stalls selling lots of local product. Taxi trips are cheap but be sure they use a meter or ask the price first. If there is a Liner in port some drivers try to up the price of a journey so beware.
Buses are fine and cheap. Some of the trips along the coast can be a bit scary due to the steep roads along a rocky coast line. Trips are plentiful from sightseeing to organised walks which are very popular. Overall a great holiday with excellent weather while we were there.
Just a special mention for Rachel, our Tui rep who worked so hard to make everyone’s holiday great. Well done.
The staff were so nice and helpful particularly Zamir and Colby and I felt we got to know them a little bit over the two weeks which really enhanced our stay there. Zamir helped us to book some tours and excursions and had a really good knowledge of the island because he has lived there for 5 years, a real asset to the hotel. I did a yoga/balance class on a couple of mornings which I thoroughly enjoyed and would perhaps next time make more time for some of the activities available at the hotel. My only tiny criticism is that the hotel is up quite a steep hill and so the tour coaches can’t collect you from outside and so you need to walk onto an accessible road. That was a minor issue for us though and we would definitely use the hotel again.
We had room 604 which was nearly at top (7 floors), views were amazing overlooking the pool, sea and Funchal. The room itself we couldn’t fault, massive double bed, spacious room with a good size bathroom, free air con and safe. Towels were changed daily and they also have towels for you to go by the pool which you can change daily. Tea and coffee and a fridge also in the room.
Pool was lovely with a bar, charge all food and drinks to room and pay at end of stay which was good, the free wifi was also good by the pool. No need to rush down for beds as plenty available all day..
We were on B&B rate, breakfast was nice, plenty of options, continental, fresh omlettes to suit, hot variation options (bacon, sausage, beans, hash browns, toms etc), I had a look at evening meal one night, ok if you paid half board as it worked out approx. £10 pp extra, but I wouldn’t pay the €29 they were asking at hotel for it, there was entertainemt in top floor bar but we didn’t bother as we were out.
Plenty of good restaurants downtown, be prepared to walk back up ‘cardiac hill’ on way back up, If you’re prepared to shop around then good offers can be found at reasonable prices (similar to UK for 3 course and bottle of wine, don’t expect to see €1 pint offers!!!)
Defintely would recommend hotel, adults only, someone said last time they were there, no one under 40 stayed, but due to Madeira being on green list in UK, it was like Love Island!!! Funchal not the place for youngsters though.
Staff were great at breakfast, couldn’t do enough fprmyou, after taking towels down on beds (about 7.45), waiter copped me taking fresh coffee up in a cup, next day he had a jug ready for me to take up, thought that was class.
We had sea room view and it was fabulous to wake up every day to blue skies and the view of the sea and the islands in the distance. Our room was very spacious, cleaned every day and fresh towels. There was a safe, fridge and tea and coffee making facilities. Breakfast was excellent and I liked that we were all given a tong and spoon to use so it felt very hygienic. We found the evening meal good with lots of choice. If you are on half board you can enjoy a free night at the A la carte restaurant, it was lovely and the service was first class.
We managed to get a sun bed every day because we are early risers but did notice some people struggled because the hotel was full and there wasn’t enough for everyone.
All the staff were very helpful and polite. A special mention to Zamir the Tui rep who was very informative and knowledgeable.
It was very noticeable that there was lots of younger couples at the hotel, perhaps like us, it felt safer to be here than other counties like Spain and Greece. That said we had an amazing holiday and Madeira is wonderful and will definitely return.
I would definitely recommend this hotel!!

On arrival we were slightly disappointed with our room 203 a low floor so didn’t get the same views the higher floors had and our pay per view movies TV did not work we advised reception and Tui reps about this 5 times but it was not sorted! We were also a bit disappointed that such a special wedding anniversary was not even recognised by the hotel.
But despite this disappointment we had a wonderful holiday we stayed half board and the food is excellent the à la carte meal at Culinarium was lovely and very special the service was fantastic. The spa is lovely we visited twice it is very clean and pleasant to relax in. The rooftop terrace and jacuzzi were the highlight for us we visited this most days and enjoyed the pre dinner wine most evenings the view from the terrace is amazing. I took part in one of the daytime wellness activities the girls are so nice and friendly and very knowledgeable I was really impressed. We also did the gin tasting which was again was really good and highly recommended. We had mixed weather but this enabled us to go out and about and explore Funchal which we really enjoyed there is plenty to do in the surrounding area. We prepaid for our drinks and got a bonus amount added this enabled us to have lots of cocktails and wine /beer etc..without thinking about the cost the hotel also provides bottled water in your room each day.
We really enjoyed our stay at this hotel and would definitely book here again it’s great value for money for a good quality hotel with excellent staff who work very hard and we enjoyed the location for the views it’s unbeatable we just hope if we return again next year we get a better room on a higher floor with a working TV next time!

We have just enjoyed our second Christmas in the hotel and our fourth visit to it. As soon as we arrive the reception staff welcome us back, the same happens when we use the bar for a pre-dinner drink and then in the hotels buffet restaurant where there is always a good choice of food. One of the hotel’s other regular guests who have stayed there many times said once you have stayed in the hotel and return you are considered to be family, I think he was correct.
Although the Savoy Gardens is out of the centre of Funchal, for us its location is part of the attraction with its splendid views from the front of the hotel and roof top terrace. We often walk into Funchal which takes a leisurely walk (downhill) of around 40 minutes, especially if you stop off at the park on the way to admire the views over the harbour and the cruise liners which regularly visit Funchal. If we don’t fancy a walk we purchase bus tickets from the reception and catch one of the many buses in from the main road down below, then a taxi back from outside the Ritz in Funchal which usually costs between six to seven euros.
Funchal itself is a busy town with restaurants and bars to visit, plus many shops and the spendid market which is worth a visit in itself. A ride on the cable car to the Monte Palace Gardens is a must (don’t bother with the Botanical Gardens which are not as well kept as the Monte Palace). Then when back down the bars on the front are worth a visit for a cold beer or other refreshing drinks. In the afternoon on our return it is time for a swim in the hotel’s well sized pool and a laze on one of the plentiful sunbeds.
We have returned home just a few days and are already missing the Savoy Gardens, the sunshine and the warm friendly greetings of the Savoy Gardens staff which, as our fellow gust mentioned, are now just like family.
The pool is a good size with sunbeds - you can normally get one at some point during the day. The food at the pool bar is very good and reasonably priced. We spent time most afternoons in the indoor infinity pool, which has a sauna and steam room. There was never more than 4 people in it when we were there.
The breakfast is excellent as are the evening meals. You are given your own tongs and spoon to keep food service covid safe.
The roof bar is worth a visit for a drink, the views and the occasional light entertainment of an evening.
Its very hilly around the hotel, as is the whole of Madeira, but taxi's are available should you not want to walk. The majority of the taxi's don't take cards so you'll need some Euro's.
Funchal is about 15-20 minutes away on foot but there are some great restaurants and bars very close to the hotel.
Currently masks are required in the communal area's (reception, restaurant etc) and sanitiser is available in a few locations around the hotel. This didn't impact enjoyment of the holiday at all.
I would thoroughly recommend and we hope to return at some point.
