The room itself was large, had a desk, tv, fridge, air con, wardrobe with hangars, and a few chairs. Also had black out blinds and bed side lamps. The bathroom had towels which were changed daily, soaps and a hair dryer. It was all very clean on arrival and was cleaned and made up daily.
Location is great. Right on the Opera plaza (with a metro station) and just behind the palace. Gran Via is a few minutes walks, and everything else is within walking distance. There are great eateries in all directions including traditional and modern in a variety of cuisines. Transport links are all around, however we didn't use them apart from going to and from the airport.
Can't comment much on staff but check in was quick and simple and email communications beforehand were easy. We booked direct with the hotel and got an awesome deal - 256 euros for 4 nights (just over £50 a night). They speak good English. There was always someone at the reception desk.
Can't really fault the place, I had a great time and would come back!
Overlooks Oriente Plaza and the Opera Metro station. A very short walk to the Royal Palace, gardens and Cathedral.
Close to good shopping streets (in fact walk outside the door and you are on one) and easy walking to a lot of Madrid's tourist highlights.
Rooms were lovely with small balconette overlooking plaza (which had a little market), although it was quiet when the windows were shut. Great vibe! Nice little cafe next door, laundrette close by.
Better than some of the '5 star' accommodation we were allocated during the previous tour.
Highly Recommended!!
The Opera metro stop is right in front of the hotel though every attraction (except for the Real Madrid Stadium) is only a short walk from the hotel's doorstep.
The Opera is opposite the hotel and the Royal Palace and Almudena Cathedral are beside each other and are directly behind the hotel while Gran Via, Puerto del Sol, Plaza Mayor, Plaza de Espana etc are just to the other side.
The hotel room was a good size and very clean, with TV, fridge, ironing facilities, hair dryer etc. We had a twin room with a view onto the square and an ensuite bathroom. Excellent room, though because you are facing onto a main square it can get a little noisy and Madrid is a city that never sleeps! It didn't bother us and the view is great.
The hotel by its name is a hostal but in reality it is more like a boutique hotel.
It has been modernised just enough but still retains a traditional Spanish flair.
There are stairs and a lift as well if you've heavy bags, as well as free wifi, computers and tea and coffee machines in a dining room type area. Rooms were serviced every day.
For the price and the location this hotel is fantastic.
There is a McDonalds and McCafe beside the hotel as well as a little cafe directly beside it which does sandwiches, baguettes, paninis etc at cheap prices.
The whole area is surrounded by cafes, restaurants as well.
If you are coming from the airport, take the pink line 8 until nuevos ministerios, then the dark blue line 10 until principe pio, then the R line to the Opera, and the hotel is right in front of the metro stop.
To get to the Palace and the Cathedral, turn left at the entrance of the hotel and walk straight past the Opera.
To reach Puerto del Sol turn right and follow the road straight - you can branch off to Gran Via, Plaza Mayor, Plaza de Espana this way too - or you can walk from the hotel entrance across the square, past the metro, and take the winding road to the right at the Real Cinema and this will also lead to Gran Via.
Everything was fine during our 4 nights stay, but I'd like to share two details that I found unnecessary and/or unpleasant.
The first is an EXCESSIVE use of air fresheners. The whole hotel smells (!) like a chemical factory. Our room was SATURATED with this annoying scent: curtains, bed cover, bathroom walls, inside closet, everything! We kept the window open all the time and, per our request, the cleaning person didn't use it in this room any more, but still the smell was way too intense.
The second piece of information is that each time you want to lock the safe in your room, it will cost you one euro. I found it annoying, because we were not informed that this is how the safe in our room operates.

Check-in was quick and efficient. I only met one employee who was fluent in English, but this was no problem at all for me. Each employee I interacted with was nothing less than friendly and professional. The room overlooked the Plaza and was fully equipped with air conditioning, flat screen television, safe, wardrobe etc. The room was very well appointed and very well decorated as well. I stayed in room 101, which was right next to reception on the first floor. I had read some comments regarding noise in the rooms but I didn’t encounter this at all. Once your door to the balcony is closed, you can’t hear anything inside the room. Additionally, the room was cleaned daily. I should also note, the room was quite big in my opinion as you shall see in the attached photos.
The hotel doesn’t serve breakfast or any meals for that matter but this was no problem either as I was fully aware of this when I booked. Scores of restaurants and cafes are minutes away from the hotel and most were very affordable. A McDonalds is right next door and a Burger King is adjacent to the Plaza. The hotel does however have a coffee machine and a drinks machine on the 2nd floor which can be used by all guests. There was also free Wi-Fi connectivity available for guests but you have to get the password from reception. Moreover, a computer is available on the 2nd floor for use by guests.
There are several attractions less than ten minutes’ walk away from the hotel such as Puerta del Sol, Palacio Real de Madrid and the Almudena Cathedral. If you’re interested in taking the hop on hop off bus tour, the nearest stop is outside the Palace which was stop number 12.
If you’re looking for affordable, clean and comfortable accommodation in Madrid, which won’t break the bank, definitely consider Hostal Oriente. For €58 a night I was quite happy and I shall definitely stay there again should I return to Madrid.
I asked for a room that does not face the street so it was quite but without any view. The walls are very thin so if someone was talking in the lobby I could here that (but not that loud). At the first morning there were constructions in the building so it was noisy, but at the second one it was quite (it was Saturday).
The location of the hostal is great, just near the Opera square and metro station. Very close to the Oriente Palace.
I will definitely consider staying there again once I come back to Madrid. The staff was lovely, even though most of them do not speak English.
