Hotel Riu Palace Maldivas seems to offer an opulent experience that some guests feel justifies its cost, while others deem it pricey. The vibrant atmosphere, replete with live music and themed festivities, is frequently lauded, as is the hotel's idyllic location, often likened to a serene, picturesque paradise. Luxurious, spacious rooms with breathtaking views, particularly the over-water suites, consistently receive high marks for cleanliness and comfort. While the service is generally celebrated for its friendliness and professionalism, a few guests have encountered sporadic issues. The amenities, including diverse dining options and engaging activities, add to the hotel's appeal.

Hotel's Favourite
We have just returned from a 15 night stay (11th December to 26th Dec 2022) at this marvellous hotel and had an absolutely fantastic time. We have stayed in several RIUs within the Caribbean (our last stay was in the RIU palace Negril, Jamaica) over the years so are familiar with the RIU brand.

This was our first time in the Maldives and we booked the holiday through Emirates Holidays and it took over 30 hours get here (flight to Dubai, flight from Dubai to Male, then another 30 min flight from Male to another island, then a small bus journey to the harbour and then onto a boat that took about 15 mins), but once we got here it was well worth it.

We selected the Palace on the proviso of the 2 additional restaurants (staying on the Palace island entailed access to 4 restaurants Japanese, Krystal, Steak house and Italian) and that it seemed to offer more tranquillity then the Atoll side (those on the Atoll side could not access the Palace side).

When we arrived in reception we were greeted with a refreshing towel, drink and an introduction to the resort. We were then escorted via buggy to our room (we stopped in one of junior suites with balcony) which we found was very commodious, had plenty of storage, mirrors and plug sockets (sockets are the same as England so there was no need to bring any adapters). The shower pressure was excellent and never lost the temperature (we had heard other guests mention that their shower temperature was constantly turning cold) and the air-con was spot on. As per the previous Caribbean RIUs we have stopped in an iron, ironing board, safe, kettle, umbrella and optics (rum, whiskey, vodka and gin) were provided as standard. The fridge was restocked daily with 3 large waters, 2 tonic waters, 2 diet cokes, 2 full fat cokes, 2 sprite and 4 Estrella Galicia beers. We weren’t in the room long enough to watch the TV but there were a few English speaking channels (Sky news and comedy channel) available. Our room attendant – Ken kept the room spotless. We just want to say another thanks to him for surprisingly arranging a bottle of Cava and providing the entertaining towel art for my wife’s 40th birthday (which she celebrated during our stay). We had decorated the room ourselves with balloons and bunting etc. on the day we arrived and then the following day after returning from the beach the fizz etc. had been supplied so that was a real nice touch – thanks again Ken.

During our stay we made friends with another couple who were staying in one of the water villas. They invited us in to view their room and found it very small compared to our suite, they also had two beds pushed together to make it the same size as our king-size bed. The outside decking area looked appealing however there was only a wooden panel that separated their area from the next door guest (so you could hear their music/talking which didn’t seem very private) and the access to the sea wasn’t utilised as there was stingrays and small sharks prevalent which they didn’t want to encounter. Furthermore the sun only hit their decking area for a short while so they ended up using the beach as per those guests who weren’t in the water villas.

We are beach lovers so our days were spent just catching the rays and chasing the sun on the beautiful white beach. The wi-fi is excellent so were able to listen to our favourite radio stations on our phones down there. The beach and sea are both perfect and remind us of the beaches and sea in the Bahamas. It’s nice to know there isn’t any beach hawkers so you can just chill without getting disturbed. There was no issue getting a sunbed on the beach (pool area seemed to fill up quick but that area was heavily in the shade) and the beach towels are provided on the table just to the side of the bar (no towel card needed) and are replenished thoroughly throughout the day. There is a hammock that is built into the shoreline with the ‘I love RIU Palace Maldives’ sign on it that makes a good Kodak moment (there are two swings with ‘RIU Maldives' sign built into the shoreline on the Atoll side as well as a palm leaf heart).

We are very itinerant travellers who have been all over the world and have never once fancied doing any snorkelling, so we thought we would give it bash during our stay. We purchased a few cheap snorkelling sets before we came away and my goodness we were pleased we did. The aquatic life we experienced was amazing. One of the other guests we got talking to recommended the snorkelling on the Atoll side; they said Villa 22 is the best area. So one morning we got up about 6am to do it, we didn’t see anything different to that on the Palace side apart from the massive deep drop in the shoreline.

We were pleased the 24 hour sports bar was on the Atoll side as it gave us the incentive to get up and jog over to start our daily session (its 5 o clock somewhere). It took us about 5 mins to jog the bridge distance between the two islands (on a night time it took us about 13 mins for a casual stroll). We saw several stingrays and little sharks during our jogs between the two islands. On our first morning we stuck our heads into the gym and found it quick small with the equipment tightly close together. We stuck to running a few lengths of the bridge. The sports bar has a decent coffee machine too; the drinks brands differ slightly from the Palace side (Bombay Sapphire is provided on the Palace side). The Beer is the same on both sides which is Carlsberg. There are two decent pool tables in the bar with a book shelf that has plenty of books and board games. On a night the fridges are stocked up with burgers and hotdogs and there is a microwave provided to heat them up.

We downloaded the RIU app before arrival and you will need this to make the restaurant reservations, you will also need a QR scanner app to download the menus for the restaurants. If you have any bother with restaurant reservations you just need to pop into reception and speak to one of the concierge team who will be happy to assist. It was a nice touch for the reception team to book us a table in Krystal for my wife’s 40th (which was on our 2nd day of our stay), we had dropped them an email a few weeks or so before we left just to see if they could arrange the restaurant reservation prior to arrival, they said they would look into it for us. They also arranged a cake for her in Krystal and sang happy birthday which was also a nice surprise – thanks again.

We only visited the Japanese restaurant once and the rest of the time we visited the steak, Krystal and Italians multiple times. The food at all the restaurants was absolutely suburb. We dined three times in the buffet during our stay and on each occasion there was a different theme with something for everyone’s palate. The breakfast buffet was also spot on and we liked the fact that you could help yourself to the fizz and make yourself several mimosas.

The sun started to set about 5ish so we would move to the bar for a few sunset drinks whilst listening to DJ Lakvinda’s chill out tracks. Bar snacks are available between 11 and 12 and 15.30 to 17.30, again you will need the QR scanner to download the menu where things like chicken nuggets, fish bites, chips and sandwiches can be ordered. Bingo is played at 15.30 every day at the bar and is a good laugh. We won the bingo twice and have 2 nice RIU caps as keepsakes. For the nights we dined on the Atoll side we would visit the sports bar and the disco/concert room. There was always a good turn on and the band were excellent.

We also spent Christmas here and experienced all the hard work and preparation that the staff/team put in to making the day perfect. The team members spent a few months before hand (on their days off) making all the Christmas Eve decorations by hand and they were all fantastic, even the little decorations placed on the Christmas eve gala tables were all hand made. The Christmas Eve Gala was wonderful. The team worked extra long shifts that day to get everything set up. There were 2 dinner sittings for the gala which were held in the Buffet area. The tables were wonderfully dressed and the food on offer was delicious (turkey and all the trimmings).

The main bar/pool bar on the Palace side is ran extremely efficiently where you never ever have to wait for a drink. Even whilst sunbathing the team members would come over so we didn’t have to move and could put our drinks orders in. There are more branded drinks on the Palace side too.

All the team/staff members we encountered (on both islands) work so hard, they are based here 11 months of the year and we can’t believe they work away from their loved ones and families for this length of time. Despite this they are always smiling and provide a top notch service. Both islands are excellently maintained from the grounds to the toilets. The disinfectant they use smells fab.

On our last day we were sent the travel times for our returning journey to Male.

We had an absolutely fabulous holiday at the RIU Palace Maldives which was made even more perfect by all the team members whose hard work is massively appreciated, you will forever be in our hearts. We therefore gives thanks to them all especially – Charmara (pool bar at the Palace), Rumesh, Arminda, Fernando, Sachin, Pasi, Win, Sande, Manchee, Poonan, Sanju, Imma, Samee, Torre, Nipuna, Chamara (clean team at the Palace), Ken (our room attendant), Luis, Marshall, Lenir, Nilan, Nanhour (clean team on Atoll side), Ahlam, Prashan (24 hour bar), Maleesha (Atoll side) and all the senior management we encountered were all friendly and welcoming.

We have just come back from this amazing hotel and I had to write a review as we feel this is an exceptional place. The room and in fact the whole resort is probably the cleanest place I have ever stayed in. We stayed in a first floor beach front room and this was larger than the average room (in my experience) and the balcony was huge. We were in room 216, which was directly opposite the sunset. We were always able to have sun beds outside our room. This side is very shallow, so you can walk far out looking at the fish and sharks and the water is very calm and warm. If you wanted deeper water, just walk through to the other side (2 mins) and there was more of a breeze, with deeper water. Personally I preferred the calm side. Beach towels were available in the room and by the pool.

The man who cleaned the room was a master at towel art and we looked forward to seeing what he had created each day.

We planned to try the restaurants, but to be honest the choice and quality was so good in the buffet we didn’t bother. I would like to thank whoever is responsible for the desserts - they were amazing and I ate far too many!

One of the main things with this resort is the amazing staff. They always go above and beyond, spending time chatting and getting to know you. We had a long conversation with the manager and asked him lots of questions regarding how the resort was built and he was happy to answer. I can’t remember all the staff names but in the buffet the lady in charge, Sanwell and Marshall stood out for us and in the bar Ajith, Fernando and the young lady (sorry I can’t remember your name).

We wandered over to the Atoll side a couple of times and if you want a livelier atmosphere then this is probably more suited to you. We enjoyed the quieter Palace side though.

Look out for the fruit bats at dusk-they are huge. We are not snorkellers, but the water is so clear you can see just by walking around in the water. We saw stingrays, manta rays, turtle, octopus, sharks, many many fish and a crown of thorns starfish (beautiful to look at, but don’t touch as they are poisonous).

All in all a wonderful 2 weeks holiday and well worth the long journey to get there.

We just got back from our Honeymoon and we are extremely happy with our trip. We stayed at Riu Palace Maldives overwater villa for 10 nights. The staff was very kind and thoughtful. They tried to accommodate us to the best of their capability. The resort and the rooms were clean and well kept. As the Riu Palace guests we were able to check out 4 restaurants in total (2 at Palace and 2 at Atoll). However, they are not open everyday and you have to check their schedule to make a reservation as they are quickly booked. There are also 2 buffets and one 24-hour sports bar.

The entertainment crew and their water activities were also very fun! (including bingo and magic carpet). We did kayaking, paddle boarding, and snorkeling on our own which was included in our stay. We also did the "paid" Jet ski and Snorkeling with the instructor tour. We just got lucky to sign up for those activities since many of the instructors were on quarantine and everything was limited. One thing that can get improved is that the games are only provided on specific times and it would be more enjoyable if the games could be used whenever there is a need especially on rainy days. Another thing that needs improvement is the minibar. Please note that there is no alcohol as advertised on RIU website and only soft drinks, water and beer is provided. I would suggest RIU to either fill the minibar with alcohol as advertised or change their advertisement to exclude alcohol at the minibar.

The pool area and the service for drinks on both Atoll and Palace side were amazing, however we enjoyed Atoll side more. We met so many employees and got to know them by name during our stay. Isuru at the Sunshine Pool Bar was the best bartender we had during our stay! His drinks were sooo delicious, especially the ‘Isuru Special’. He was very kind polite, and friendly. He made our vacation one to remember! Isuru made sure our stay was pleasant and always follow-ed up if we needed anything. He would greet us with a smile and positive energy.

Also, we would like to mention Kusal from the baggage/reception who was driving us back and forth from Atoll to Palace whenever we needed. He was very helpful and friendly as well. He was always was very happy to provide assistance when needed.

Overall our stay at Riu Palace Maldivas was incredible! We had such an amazing experience.

We are visiting the Rui Palace Maldives and are truly saddened to be leaving this beautiful island and resort tomorrow.

From day one we were made to feel welcome and greeted on arrival by friendly helpful employees with a refreshing drink and cold towel... which is always a plus after such a long flight. The rooms are immense spacious with toiletries present especially good for those who like to travel light. Fully stocked mini bar and optics which is a great touch.

We would like to personally thank Cristisno always going above and beyond his role to ensure we had a fabulous stay along with Nandana who was there daily at the pool bar to greet us and always making my girlfriend the drink of choice nothing is to much trouble for this guy such a great asset to the Rui team.

The food is fantastic something for everyone my girlfriend likes salads there was a vast choice. There was fresh cook stations and it’s never over crowded. we enjoyed the crystal restaurant again greeted with a glass of champagne and the food was amazing. Mt girlfriend is a fussy eater and they accommodated her no problem which was fantastic.

The Italian and japenese were equally great employees always making sure your glass is full and ever so polite.

We love this resort honestly no negative things I can find and we have stayed at 5 star resorts in dubai over the last couple of years and the service at Rui palace is commendable.

A special thank you to Madhu at the palace side bar she always is happy smiling ensuring your drinks are served as you like just another star employee super friendly and hardworking to ensure guests are catered for. I watched her deal with a rude man at the bar and I can honestly say her actions were commendable, she stated calm and still served him with a smile and never once commented true professional wonderful team

This was our first time to the Maldives and we certainly were not disappointed.

The cleanliness of all areas in the hotel was excellent. All staff worked so hard to maintain a high standard of hygiene.

Special thanks to Dixon; who made the most amazing curries
Bar- l was run with military precision and provided exceptional service for all, thank you.

Garden staff worked diligently, throughout the day to maintain a well looked after gardens.

I would like to say a special thank you for Marshall, the manager Ibrahim and all the staff that made my husband’s birthday so very special. Firstly we went down to breakfast to find and were lead to a decorated table with a bottle of sparkling wine. All staff wished my husband happy birthday. We decided to go on the dolphin trip, which was amazing. When we arrived back to our room, Ibrahim had arranged for the room to be decorated with balloons, flowers, cake made of towels and happy birthday made out natural leafs from the gardens. Marshall then arranged a private dinner on the beach with our own waiter Rishwan. Finally, Marshall arranged for a cake to be brought out at 10.00 to the main bar area; staff and friends sang “happy birthday” A truly memorable birthday. Thank you to all the team.

My only criticism of this hotel, is the music ant the bar; Its on a loop and the same songs play over and over again. This needs to be changed; l knew what songs were coming next. I now know all the words to ' The Gambler by Kenny Rogers.

Just returned back from Maldives! We were truly thankful that we had chosen to stay on the Palace side of the island, which enabled us access to use both sides out of choice, depending on our mood, but in the end found that we mainly stayed on the Palace side as we found this to be more a peaceful and picturesque environment to relax in. However for families there is more to do on the Atoll side, so if you want a more upbeat stay you can at least have this choice.
We cannot say enough about the welcoming and polite attitude of the staff, the barmen of the Paradise bar in particular had always time to chat and entertain with their skills of cocktail making, i would like to thank in particular Aminda, Sanjay and Fernando, who were very attentive and always had a welcoming smile towards us, they generally were pleased to see you return to their area.
We tried all restaurants whilst there and found the Krystal and Japanese to be our particular favourites, although you have to precook the restaurants, we found this to be well organised and stress free.
In the Krystal restaurant ( which we chose out of the 4 available ) to help celebrate my 65th birthday, the staff couldn’t have done more, Mina and the hostess (who looked amazing in her traditional dress by the way) in particular orchestrated the chefs, waiters and herself to present a cake and champagne to me, which was delicious and enjoyed very much, it certainly helped to make my day feel very special.
The table was laid beautifully and they go to great lengths to not leave out any fine details, nothing is too much trouble.
Our room was cleaned to perfection everyday by our room boy Bhathiya, a very polite and courteous young man.
We will certainly like to return to Maldives our experience in snorkelling made it magical with many varieties of tropical fish to be seen daily, plus baby sharks, mantarays and turtles, should you be lucky to see them in the shallow waters.
There are plenty of other water sports available, but we found the fascination of snorkelling enough for us.
Most of our day was found to be soaking up the sunshine, eating in the buffet restaurant, the food available was well presented and covered all dietary needs then afterwards more sunshine then swimming to the pool bar!!
Thank you everyone who made our stay very special, including our friends Alan and Shirley.

We stayed in the Riu Palace back in Nov 2019 and it was fantasic. Our room was on the water and it was unbelievable. Everyday the room would be cleaned immaculately and alwyas a little shaped towel which was a lovely touch.

We found the food at the buffet really good as we were expecting it to be repetitive but in fact there were lots of options. The pools were lovely but i found the pool in Riu Attoll to have a much better atmosphere.

We tried 3 of the 4 restaurants available and the steak restaurant and Japanese restauarant were amazing!! However, the Italian was awful. We left pretty much all of the food as the lasange wasn't cooked and the gnocci didnt look or taste anuthing of the sort.
The entertainment is limited, and room service only offers sandwiches...
Other than that the staff were super accomodating and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay!

We originally chose this hotel because of the on-site dive center and was not disappointed with the experience. The place is beautiful, our overwater suite room was spacious and clean. Everything is of very good quality, the room was quiet, the bed was huge and the mattress very comfortable.
The food in the restaurant was very nice with a good variety to choose from.
We can also highly recommend the dive center, our experience with them was very good.
The best thing about this resort, however, was the staff in all areas. Everyone was extremely nice and friendly, always there to help and make our stay as relaxing as possible. Adam was our housekeeper for the first few nights and he did a wonderful job making our room spotless every day. In the restaurant Anura was always there to make sure we had everything we wanted and asking if we wanted anything special which might not be on display in the buffet. In the restaurant Samwell was taking care of us making sure our glasses were always full, Fernando doing the same when we were spending time in the bar. Lakaa made sure we were never bored entertaining us with bingo or a friendly chat.
We also felt very safe during our stay as the cleaning was very thorough, there was temperature check before entering the restaurant, hand sanitisers were provided throughout the hotel and everyone was wearing a face covering while attending the buffet.
The last few days became a lot busier when a nearby hotel closed and all their guests came to RIU and we could feel that the original time and care provided dropped drastically since there was the same number of staff taking care of a lot more guests. That said, everyone was still extremely nice and did a good job trying to keep up with the sudden surge of people.
The only negative thing we experienced was the journey from Male airport to the resort with the seaplane. The wait time and the journey was very long and they said they couldn't take our bigger luggage because of weight constraints so it came later in the evening. We were lucky to have packed some essentials into the carry-on bag and were not without all our stuff for the first day. Strangely, on the way back our luggage came with us without any trouble so not sure why it was left behind on the first journey. They also made us wait in the outside waiting area instead of the nice lounge that looked much more comfortable, which is not a big thing by itself, but waters down the high quality experience we were expecting. This experience was in harsh contrast to the hotel's welcoming and friendly environment.

Some say you shouldn’t go back to the same place on holiday as it is never as good the second time. Riu Maldives definitely is a exception as the second time there is even better than the first.
Staff at the hotel couldn’t be better, or more helpful. As there are less guests at the moment, the food is of an even higher quality than normal, the service is exceptional all round, and the quiet peaceful atmosphere was just the right tonic following eight months of working from home.
Booking direct with the hotel had the added benefits of reduced rates compared with travel agent booking and flexibility of dates.
The diving is without question some of the best both from the staff, equipment as well as the in water sites.

There truly isn't a bad thing to say about this resort. My wife and I spent a week here and I don't think anything could have been any better. From just pulling up to the hotel the view was stunning and we were greeted by friendly staff members immediately. We had dinner reservations already booked when we arrived and were whisked away to our room right away. The room itself was much more spacious than the pictures made it look and had everything we could've wanted. The cleaning staff was incredibly friendly and did an incredible job cleaning every single corner. The downtime at the resort was easy to make enjoyable, from soaking in the picturesque views everywhere on the island to going snorkeling or paddle boarding to lounging in the sports bar. The meals were better than I had ever expected. Mina, Samwel and Pradeep made sure to keep our glasses and plates full with a combination of buffet style and a la carte foods. Due to Covid they only had one restaurant open at a time but they did a great job of alternating the food options every day so we really felt like we got to eat all the different cuisines the resort offered. There were even special nights where we had an authentic Maldivian dinner on the beach. The evenings were quite enjoyable listening to the surf at the beach side bar with live music and top notch drinks served by Aminda, Chameera and Sanjeewa. It's important to note as well that while Covid is an issue everyone at the resort took it seriously, masks were worn in any building, hand sanitizer was available at every turn and they took temperatures 3 times a day of all of the staff and guests.

I truly cannot express how great of a trip this was and how incredible everyone at the Riu was. I would 10/10 recommend this to anyone and everyone wanting a vacation in paradise.
