Welcome to the Denman Guesthouse at the earthclubfactory. We operate a guesthouse that is run in the spirit of a hostel. This 100 year property has had a complete redevelopment sewer, septic, roof, foundation, electrical. The water is filtered 2ce and runs throw a UV system and is tested monthly for the Bistro. It has some odour, typical of this area, but blame mother earth. We have slowly been fixing the fundamentals but it remains in the character it was 100 years ago. The Earth Club Factory guiding principles are biodegradable, sustainable appropriate technology , organics. To a certain degree we incorporate this into our business, and always strive to do more. The Bistro is a great place to enjoy our home roasted coffee, yes done on 2 special BBQS. Simple affordable food, numerous music event, country views, lots or deer and peace and quiet.

Vancouver Island, Canada
The Gulf Islands have a very granola feel, very laid back and earthy (hippy). Denman Island is very nice and was perfect. I took the train up from Victoria and got the ferry across to the island and stayed there for the July long weekend. I hitch-hiked to Hornby island and had a wonderful day laying on the beautiful Tribune Bay beach. As a female travelling on her own, I felt very comfortable and hitch-hiking was really easy. The hostel was in a great location near the Denam ferry terminal, and close to "downtown". The room I stayed in was small and quaint. There are 3 bathrooms that are all shared, and if you are not familiar with the peom "If it's yellow, let it mellow. If it's brown flush it down." You better get used to it. There is a hot tub and lots of hammocks to relax in. The kitchen is big and it has everything you would need to cook your own meals. I am definitly going back to this hostel. The owners, Donna and Sheldon are great people.

I wasn't really sure what to expect when heading to Denman island, but when i got there i realized it was a whole other world. This is a place where people actually live on "island time". Denman is a gem of the gulf islands with 2 beautiful lakes to go swimming and a huge rope swing if your brave enough. There are many beach and trails to wonder around through meadows or rain forests. The guest house has had many upgrades since i was there last, free pancake breakfast, Wifi and pay for 3 get one free! There has been lots of work done to the house new bathrooms and restaurant modifications but it still has that nice rustic feel to it. The hot tub out side is great to sit out under the starry sky with a couple beers and meet some new friends. With the Bistro just out your door(literally) you can get you fix of all your food or your fancy coffees to get your day off to a early start. The Guest house is a must stay if you are lucky to make it this far! Just ask the owners Donna or Sheldon they will let you know where to go what to do and how to get there!
Tips:
Check out Chickadee Lake and its 2 huge rope swings for all ages and where you can go swim in the fresh water
Check out the Free Store.... Yea thats right its all FREE!
2 min walk is down town Denman, don't get your hopes up for a mall or some brand name shops
Just hang out relax and enjoy the island life go out and chat with the locals you may find your self at a rocking Denman Hall Party!

Came to Denman with a friend to enjoy the beautiful scenery and escape the snowpocalypse of Northern Alberta for a little while. We couldn't have been happier at the Denman Guesthouse! We had the whole place to ourselves with a quaint private room and a cozy porch to relax on in the evenings. I'd definitely recommend it!

What you get out of this place depends on your expectations. Denman island is a great chilled out place with some lovely places to visit. The guesthouse is an old farmhouse that has an olde worlde feel, and the living room looks as though nothing has changed for at least 50 years, which gives it a real charm. It is in a good location, close to the ferry and has a great bistro attached to it. The owners are lovely and helpful.
Visitors to Denman Island go for the relaxing chilled attitude, and I think if you are going to stay at the guesthouse you need to be pretty relaxed. We had been happily camping and hostelling before our stay there and are not too picky, but found it was just too dirty to be an overall good experience. The bathroom was filthy with lots of old razors etc in it and the fridge was full of rotting food. Few of the other reviewers have commented on this, probably because of the overall charm of the place, but I think it is worth knowing before you book, as the lonely planet omits that part from their description.

i stayed at the denman island guest house for a whole week and i had a wonderful time.
its a beautiful old farmhouse with a lot of charme. a big kitchen, a cosy livingroom, a lovely veranda (that i would have used if it wasn' t raining every day) and a coffeshop just next door, perfect to have latte, tasty food, hang out and meet local people. donna and shelden were wondrful hosts and i would immediately go there again!

$50 a night for a private room in this place was a rip-off. Cobwebs, dust, dirt and stained comforter in the room was not very appealing. Couple that with the mouse traps, the very dirty bathrooms, and the really smelly shower water, and I would never stay there again.

Surprisingly (for island life) the guy seemed to be concerned about selling me something like the $20 a day for the crappy bike rental, or phone cards.

Their brochures and website will have you believe they are "hospitality professionals." Maybe if they worked at seedy hotels.

The only decent thing about this place was the restaurant attached.

spider webs everywhere, bed was awful, free use of rather seedy kitchen, people were friendly very disappointing over all. no attempt made to see if we were comfy, no top sheet on the bed and comforter was seedy, sheet was super threadbare. room was dark, closet toilet was gloomy, spider webs in the common bathroom. spider webs on the pots and pans. I washed our dishes before we used them.

It's just a few steps to the right - the 1905 Denman farm house was recycled into a hostel type guest house 40 years ago. It reminded me of the 1970's farm hostels all over New Zealand complete with hot sulphur smell in the shower. It is a eclectic mix of accommodation some ramshackle some not. A tour with a volunteer staff member I discovered 2 trailers, an Earth Works cottage, tower and of course the 4 large rooms in the main house. One bed was actually a kid's trampoline. Different.

The charm is in the difference and the staff. The Bistro had a local's feel and the food was good. Vegetarian Lasagne was excellent. However it closed by 6:30 pm, so get in quick plus they run out of food.

There is evidence of delayed maintenance - understandably as the house is old, the seasonal income short and a make do attitude is part of the charm. The young staff ( some paid, some woof, some volunteer) were all a pleasure to deal with. The towel left on a table with my name on it was a nice touch. Great service, great food, friendly vibe.

Like others have said - what you get out of it depends on who you are.
I'll mention the 'bad' bits now so that I can type uninterrupted of how great it was later. The water is heated by brimstone so it smells like sulpher. The whole house is very rustic and earthy (dusty, spidery and old). The rooms are creaky and the windows have no glass, just thin lace - which does not keep the mud wasps out (eek!).
HOWEVER Donna and Sheldon and their son Matthew are the most fantastic people. The building is beautiful and hippy-esque. The garden is so relaxing, has a gorgeous view and had deer walking around freely at dusk and dawn.
I made so many friends there just because everyone is just so happy and friendly. The attached bistro had lovely food. The location is great.
You HAVE to check out both lakes there - just heavenly.
If you can deal with not having all modern luxuries - GO!
